I've been catching up on episodes of the drama In Darkness on the BBC starring Anne-Marie Duff.

I'm still trying to work out how her character manages to board a Virgin Train at Manchester Piccadilly and travels back to her home in Scotland.

It used to be a Virgin Trains operated route for many years until it went over to TPE.

However I believe direct trains may still operate occasionally when there are engineering works blocking the West Coast Main Line.

It's contemporary. She's made three journeys to and from Scotland, all from Piccadilly on a Pendo. I think it's just bad research.

The Class 350/4 TPX units that run to Scotland are 4-car, so they would be either 4 or 8 coaches long.

Absolutely. It's more to do with where on certain stations they can get permission to film. Hence why Marylebone crops up a bit (as Stevenage in Steve coogans last series) and in Gavin and Stacey when boarding a Cardiff bound train. Cheaper and easier to film at that station than bigger stations.

Plus it's better for the flow of the programme for someone to get on a train and off again than showing them having several changes etc...

The winning answer! TV is fake on so many levels, it's all about the imagery and what looks good.

A few years ago here in Essex, one of the TOWIE episodes was meant to feature the characters on a Liv St to Shenfield journey so it would more than likely have been a 321, hardly cutting edge rolling stock and possibly too much background noise for TV sound. They actually filmed the on-train footage on the LTS line with much better carriages but which come nowhere near Shenfield. And maybe C2C were more helpful too.
