Recently travelled Bradford via Leeds & Stevenage to Cambridge on VTEC First Advance. I realise a BOJ is not permitted on an advance ticket, but at Leeds having got there early I used the First Class lounge, which meant exiting the barriers, alternatively I could have left the station and wandered of for a while, effectively breaking the journey.

Does the BOJ restriction relate to whole journey or just the booked VTEC part?

The break of journey restriction applies to the whole ticket, but you do not break your journey by using station facilities without leaving the station.

No reservation for first part of journey, local Northern service from Bradford. I didn't leave the station, but the point is having exited the barriers to access First Class lounge I could have done.

You would not have been permitted to exit the station, but nothing physically prevented you from doing so.

If you don't have a reservation then you were perfectly within your rights to travel on an earlier service than the one on your itinerary. Having done so, you were again perfectly within your rights to make use of station facilities.

Nothing to worry about here at all.
