Hi,

I just renewed my zone 1-3 oyster season online. I touched in at my local station to complete the purchase successfully. The tube stations near me have recently had their ticket offices closed otherwise I would have bought at the station.

Does my Gold Card come through the post or do I have to visit a tube station with a ticket office?

Cant seem to find anything on tfl website.

Many Thanks

I might be wrong, but doesn't it have to be purchased from a National Rail ticket office/website and not from TfL, as it's a National Rail product? If I'm right there (and I can't find a definitive reference) I'm afraid you may be stuck.

<Mods please delete, this was wrong advice>

I've always bought it from a London Underground office in the past and got one. I will give TFL a ring...

Good idea, if that proves me wrong send me a quick PM and I will remove my post.

Just rang the helpline, she says I have to go to a ticket office to get the card and it loaded onto my oyster.

Does anyone know which London Underground ticket offices are definitely still open? what a pain.

Euston Square and Euston definitely are. Can't speak for any others though, I'm rarely on LU and always have an outboundary travelcard when I am so don't really pay attention to ticket offices

There's the new TfL visitor centre upstairs at Euston which is I think now open in case the actual ticket office is shut (which I half recall it might be because work is being done).

To clear up any misconceptions, what class303 is describing is technically a Gold Record Card, which is available to annual travelcard holders on Oyster and acts the same as a normal National Rail gold card. This should be issued by post within a few days of ‘collecting’ the travelcard at a gate line; I'm confused as to why TfL's customer services said otherwise.

But you still have to go to an Oyster-capable ticket office to get the Gold Card flag set on your Oyster if you want to benefit from reduced off-peak PAYG fares when travelling out of your zones (or it may be something that can be done on a ticket machine with staff assistance). You'd expect this to happen automatically when buying an annual TC on Oyster but apparently it doesn't.

Indeed, annoyingly – the bit I was refuting was that someone has to go to a tube station to get the record card in the first place, which was disappointing incorrect advice from TfL (unless that process has changed).

Just a thought: I wonder if ordering a new Oyster with an annual travelcard on it from the TfL website would result in the railcard discount being set without further input? (In the same way that one can order an Oyster with auto top-up enabled, to help people who only use buses.)

The stumbling block with the railcard discount is that there is only an expiry date associated with the discount flag. If the travelcard is purchased in advance then it is not appropriate to set the flag.

Presumably though, if ordering a new Oyster with annual travelcard, the card is sent to arrive just a few days before the travelcard starts? If so there wouldn't be much of a concern about discount validity, although I concede it would still be a couple of extra discounted days.
