So how does that square with it being suggested elsewhere that EMT will be express south of Kettering? Logically, that would have to mean either a) the suggestion is incorrect, or b) another different service would run, ie. Thameslink, or that c) Wellingborough station would be closing. I assume C isn't likely, so it has to be either A or B.

So when the cables go up to Kettering and Corby essentially nothing will run on them until they are extended further north.
I'm guessing we'll see a derogation to allow the HSTs to continue in service for another few years. It can't be cost-effective to do a major rebuild for that sort of timescale, especially in parallel with similar sets for Scotrail which do have a longer assured life.

As others have suggested, it really isn't a problem, and certainly not worth getting horrified about. If anyone's going to run something early, then they should make sure that it can at least get to the next place where it can be regulated, without delaying anything else. If there's a margin to get a freight train across a busy junction ahead of its booked path, then it makes perfect sense to me to do so, because it'll be out of the way then - you never know what might happen in the meantime, and a delay to something else might mean that the path that's so freed suddenly becomes very useful!Running the railway smoothly presumably depends on trains presenting at junctions in the right order.
Given this, the potential for early running to cause reactionary delay must me as much as for late running.
I remain horrified by how many freight trains, at least according to RTT, are running seriously early.

Some or all of the Corbies (?) could go slow line north of Bedford, depending how much of this is eventually doubled. The slightly lower speed on the slow line is partly offset by not having to cross over north of Bedford and south of Kettering.

These were essentially put on as positioning moves to get the Meridians to and from the depot in Derby. Can anyone comment on how well used they are?

Someone will certainly have to put some thought into the diversion aspect, you get a problem at Market Harborough for instance then the whole system is going to fall apart, remember the Meridian that ripped the track up not so many years ago and caused us to use the Manton diversion for about a week?, that would mean buses from Leicester to Kettering as the only alternative, that's some alternative ......
Not necessarily. DMUs running under the wires to a destination off the wires is commonplace. As I said earlier, if they need to keep the route knowledge and wish to use in service trains to do it they can run the odd Corby train as a Meridian.
Depending on where the future EMT EMU depot is, it could make sense for the first up train and last down train to be operated by Meridians, it could save some empty running by EMUs.
It is not much different to SWT running a DMU to Portsmouth Harbour late at night on services that are 444s or 450s for the rest of the day...
Using the Oakham route with Thunderbird diesel locos pulling stranded EMUs could still provide a diversion, as long as enough drivers signed the route etc
EMT or its successor is highly unlikely to have any Meridians after electrification reaches Nottingham and Sheffield, since they are only used on these routes and a few positioning moves. And running a mixture of train types uses more capacity, especially south of Bedford where it is critical.
