A freight train has derailed in Dundee, causing delays to rail services between the central belt and Aberdeen.
Services to the north east of Scotland could be cancelled or revised until the end of the day.
ScotRail said it was working to provide replacement transport.
Taken from the BBC News website 14 minutes ago. Anyone have any more info?

Cheers

Update from the ScotRail website:

Due to a derailed train between Dundee and Carnoustie:
Impact:
Train services between Aberdeen and Edinburgh may be delayed or revised. Until the end of the day.
Customer Advice:
Train services from Edinburgh and Queen Street to Aberdeen will terminate at Dundee, train services from Aberdeen to Edinburgh and Queen Street will terminate at Carnoustie. Replacement transport has been requested to operate from Dundee to Carnoustie in both directions to connect into trains and also from Dundee to Aberdeen if required. This is arranged to be in place from 0730 but is very limited, passengers are advised to consider making their own alternative arrangements.

On a train...somewhere!
Train appearsto be 6K31 Mossend - Dundee engineers, with four wagons reported off the road. Looking at the allocations the loco appears to be 56078. Service alterations apply for the rest of the day.

Virgin Trains East Coast trains will start and terminate at Dundee and buses will run between Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

That explains the 56 I saw idling on the up line at Camperdown Junction this morning. I thought it was odd, considering the 9.06 was due through.

Virgin Trains East Coast trains will start and terminate at Dundee and buses will run between Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

An HST ran ECS Craigentinny-Dundee as 3E11 this morning. Presumably it was '3' to ensure it was given higher priority than a normal ECS run. That also means the diagrammed HST set is still sitting in Aberdeen.

Fair play to VTEC for sending an HST to Dundee. The easier option would have been to cancel this service north of Edinburgh.

They also sent one to Perth this morning STP as 3E13 (passed me at Bo'ness around 0740). More damage control?

This was planned.

There was engineering work between Perth and Inverness yesterday, meaning yesterday's northbound Chieftain was terminated at Perth (then ran ECS to Craigentinny). So no HST in Inverness to work this morning's southbound.

Ouch. Seems somewhat slightly ironic that it's the rail delivery train that's come off the rails. Looks like access may be difficult to re-rail it down there as well.

Who was the 56 being operated by? Is that one of UKRLs ones or Colas?

The enclosed area around the PW is tight, but overall it's quite spacious around there, with a car park up above on one side and disconnected sidings on the other.

The now-closed level crossing at the top of the incline has allowed Google to give a decent view of the area.

The image is 7 years old, but the only substantial difference is that the sidings are now disconnected (and significantly more shrubbery!).

So if they can't get something down there to re-rail the wagons, there is space to come in from above.

If it is indeed 56078 (I only saw its roof this morning), it's Colas.

The local paper has a view from above, which doesn't make things look much better.

Unless the "freight" carried on this train is counted towards the tonnage carried by rail, I refuse to accept that this is a "freight train".

Why is it important? The road haulage lobby is always telling us how inconsequential railfreight is, despite every ton of road construction material being counted in road figures, compared to swathes of rail construction carryings being barred by the DfT from rail figures.

Maybe only a small point, but when you are lobbying government for funding, every little helps.

What's happening with the Aberdeen southbound sleeper tonight? I can see it was terminated at Edinburgh but I can't see any CS movement to Aberdeen on RTT?

The line is still blocked, so bus to Edinburgh.

Passengers from Montrose and Arbroath are being taxied; passengers from Dundee and Fife are being advised to catch the 22.43 ex-Dundee XC service to Edinburgh.

Yikes, the line won't re-open until Thursday morning.

Can VTEC afford (diagramming-wise) to leave their "trapped" HST in Aberdeen, or might we see an ECS move via Inverness?

Indeed. Scotrail's word on this is at http://www.scotrail.co.uk/dundee-derailment

Due to an engineering train derailment near Dundee on Monday 28 September, services between Aberdeen and Glasgow Queen Street/Edinburgh will be disrupted until Thursday 1 October.

Trains from Edinburgh and Queen Street to Aberdeen are terminating at Dundee, and services from Aberdeen to Edinburgh and Queen Street terminate at Carnoustie.

Replacement buses are transporting passengers between Dundee and Carnoustie, but journey times are extended and we’re asking our customers to be prepared for slightly longer journeys.

To make things slightly easier for passengers, mutual ticket acceptance is in place on both Virgin East Coast and Cross Country trains.

The train derailed at around 2.20am on Monday morning, and our engineers are currently working on site to get the train and wagons back on the rails, and then to repair the damage to the tracks. Nobody was injured in the incident.

We’re really sorry about the inconvenience this will cause our customers, and assure you we are working as hard as we can to reopen the line and resume normal service.

If this disruption has caused you to be delayed, please take advantage of our Delay Repay Guarantee

All the more reason to reopen the Strathmore line...

Because of a freak/rare derailment?

A train derailed on the Esk Valley line 3-4 years ago, by the same token should we have used it as a reason to reopen the Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway?

Should we be taking bets on when it will actually re-open?

The last derailment in Scotland lasted over a week as I recall.

How typical - something interesting happens and I'm the other end of the country. :)

Any renewal work sites now at risk due to not getting their rails?

I suppose it depends on what they choose to do with the rails. If they can get them off, they can be reloaded.

But if they need to cut them...

A particularly awkward one - 5 wagons derailed on a 1-60 gradient with severe track damage underneath the derailment - the brand new and unused CWR is to be cut up into manageable lengths (ergo now scrap) , then the wagons recovered and track relaid. Points also involved.

No, the rails would normally be dropped weeks before they were going to be installed.

but the train seems still to be loaded in the pictures seen in the media and twitter. If the train hadn't finished its "round" of deliveries the rails for some sites will still be sat on the train.

I guess another train will have to try and pick up the slack

A DBS Bruff was being railed at the former level crossing site as I passed this morning:

Just as well they retained the access there. I think Broughty Ferry would have been the nearest access point otherwise.

Was looking on Flickr at the pics and wondered how they were going to rerail the wagons. Just out of curiosity how much was the load of rails worth?
