Standard issue for shed drivers?

I was at Carlisle back in 2007 or 2008 and was surprised to see the driver of a 66 hauled EWS coal train wearing ear defenders.
I think it was around that time they were trialing some mods to improve the cab environment due to the drivers and the union kicking up a fuss. Improved sound proofing and tinted windows spring to mind. Also it was around that time that 66171 or was it 66177? had its cab roofs painted white to reflect the heat from the sun.
