Carlisle - Newcastle: which side for best views?

Been meaning to do this for years and finally managed to organise a return trip over this line for next week. Recommendations for which side to sit on and any other advice welcomed.
What a difference a simple split at Carlisle made to the cost when starting from Glasgow BTW!

My preference is the left hand side, facing direction of travel westbound, as you get the views over the fells between Brampton and Greenhead and then the view of the River Tyne from Riding Mill to Ryton. The right hand side is better between Haltwhistle and Hexham.

If you get a 142 from Carlisle then you don't really get a choice unless you want to face backwards.

depends what you want to see

leaving Carlisle sit on the left until Newcastle then move to the right to see the bridges. Look out for the wall bisecting the line at Gilsland

As this is a return trip why not simply sit on the left ( or right ) in both directions and thereby see everything that is on both sides of the line?

The trend seems to be to try and keep Carlisle to Newcastle as 156s but really it can be pot luck and 142s are not uncommon. The only guaranteed way of avoiding 142s is getting services originates north of Carlisle or (in the other direction) is going beyond Carlisle as these will be 156s due to them coming from the Scotrail fleet.

The 10.22 Newcastle-Carlisle is always a 156 and goes from Platform 1 and goes via the High Level, through what used to be Gateshead shed(now posh flats or apartments they call them nowadays) onto the Tyne Valley. Sit on the left, however theres plenty scenery either side, I love travelling over the Tyne Valley. Enjoy the trip.
