Lost Property Office at St Pancras

Has anyone had any experience dealing with them? Do they charge for storage when you collect your items or are these charges often waived?

Looking at the St Pancras website, seems the lost property office is managed by "Excess Baggage", therefore the odds of them waiving the standard "lost property" fees are low. I would expect at least £5.

IIRC Southeastern charged me £5 to collect my Nexus 7 when I lost it on a HS service last year.

Yeah that was the issue, given that it is run by a rip-off merchant (imo).

I have had dealings with several train companies before, and never been charged a fee although the NRCoC allows them to, but railway staff are nice and exercise their discretion liberally.

With an external agency, I am not so sure. I can see them wanting to get away with as much as they are allowed to. If they were going to charge the fiver for it then they can keep it. It only cost me about £8 in the first place, and it had not been washed for a good while because I only wear it on the outside.

I wasn't charged in Manchester when I left my coat on a pendo.

It'll depend where you left it. If it was on a train, it *might* have gone to the TOC Lost Property, so it might be worth enquiring with them.
If it was on the station, then it would go to Excess Baggage.

I was thinking about that earlier can't help but wonder if most lost property going unclaimed* is due to the cost of getting it back exceeding what the item is/was worth in the first place? Last year I left a £3 umbrella on a SWT service, and the single fare from Hounslow to Waterloo was £2.95, not worth it if you are making a special journey for it, let alone when retrieval charges are bought into play. (Although I did make a special journey as it got me out of the house , and it was indeed a special journey, as I managed to get two maximum fares due to a rogue OSI and standalone validators, and didn't find the umbrella either )

There was an item in the Daily Telegraph I think it was, only a few days ago about this subject. It would appear that fees are charged for returning lost property, the fees charged are based on the approx value of the item concerned, lowest is a fiver, highest about twenty pounds. I think in years gone by when places like Waterloo and Baker Street had large lost property offices, a fee was also charged.

Unclaimed items then and now are often auctioned or sold or given to charity shops.
