How much busier are Fridays on the railway than other days?

I got thinking as the 1840 LDS-KGX is very well loaded today, yet I have got the 1805 LDS-KGX on other days of the week and it has been dead. I can't believe the 1840 is going to be THAT much more popular than the 1805. Most of the reservations are for the through journey so I don't think the extra stations can account for it!

When I did an Irish rover last Summer I was surprised at the large number of Friday only trains, but there don't seem to be many of those here in the UK. A new one that springs to mind is the 1930 KGX-NCL which is non-stop to York and plugs the gap between 1900 and 2000.

A lot of people lodge in hotels for work,and go home friday,plus lots of people also go and visit friends/family at the weekends

Fridays have always been a lot busier. It was for that reason in the 1980s that, after Day Returns were abolished for virtually all journeys, 'Blue Savers' and 'White Savers' were introduced, with the cheaper 'Blue Savers' not being valid on Fridays, and Saturdays in July/August.

It is quite a lot, for example the 1927 Sheffield to St P last Friday was very busy the full trip. But general commuter peak is normally quieter or stretched as people finish earlier or go out after work.

and on the WCML it's even worse! OHLE problem at Harrow & Wealdstone, massive disruption to Virgin and London Midland, and no service to Watford by Southern.

The cheaper AP singles seem to be harder to get on the same trains on a Friday and it seems sometimes the cheapest band isn't available either. If booking in advance I'll avoid Fridays.

Jam Packed with a 4 car 168/0. A comfy ride though, ran early until we were held on Ayhno Junction...

Even as we pulled into Banbury, About 20 people got off to the 35 that got on...

IIRC NXEC have a 1927 service North from Kings Cross which was previously not in the timetable, but now is. It runs to Newcastle, first stop York, then Darlington then Durham.

The 1827 Virgin Pendolino from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly runs FO.
The 1630, 1830 and 1900 National Express departures from London Kings Cross to Newcastle are extended to Edinburgh on a Friday.
The 1930 National Express service from London Kings Cross to Newcastle runs FO.

I can't be bothered to go trawling around FGW, ATW, NXEA, TPX and I'm sure some others' services to see what else there is.

The other busy time now is Sunday evenings. People coming back from weekends away, and the freight starts running again late afternoon. The quietest time seems to be Saturday afternoons/Evening and early Sunday.

Not very many then, certainly not many given the huge extra demand anyway!

The 1930 (was 1927) has been given as an example 3 times! And the only other completely additional service listed so far is the Euston-Manchester.

People tend to go away on Friday evening, returning on Sunday afternoon / evening. A lot of engineering work is scheduled to finish on Sunday around lunchtime, while there is almost none on Friday evenings.

Ummmm most Scottish engineering is either all day Sunday or a full weekend closure. We rarely have enginerering on Sunday morning only.
