Where is the "mud hole door" on a steam loco and what's it's function?

"Mud" in steam boiler terminology is scale which builds up inside due to boiling water - just like a kettle

It reduces circulation and can cause localised overheating

a mudhole door allows a hose to be inserted to wash out the scale and would logically be at the bottom of the boiler

Yes I will get a refund, it was not really the tour operators fault, but still very annoying and disappointing.

I have not had much luck with main line steam tours this year, I was booked on one this coming November, also around Kent, but it was cancelled, I don't know why.

Then there were the problems with WCR that caused cancellations, postponements or diesel haulage instead.

I don't know why that happened, it was due to take water at Basingstoke from about 0830 - 0850 ish, but the Woking stop was only meant to be a pick up for 2 or 3 minutes I think. I don't know if there are any realtime, times for the trip published yet.

I did not booked any steam this year because I couldn't trust any of this dispute and cancelled. I hope in 2016 will recovery service back to normal.

Thank you, there must have been quite alot of slack in the timings for that trip. apart from that and the fact that I was not on it, I hope it was a good day with good steam running ?

They held the Mayflower so she wouldn't block the only up line at West Byfleet as the water tanker was running late I believe.
