Allowing the bells to be given before the door in the Guards' van area has shut is indeed common practice on Merseyrail, and was referenced in the RAIB report into the James Street incident, stating that it was written into the dispatch instructions as being allowed.

sorry, that was supposed to be quoting post #5 in this thread but I clearly made an error. The original posting suggests that it's considered to be a shortcut closing the local door by means of the passenger close button as opposed to using the far slower, but technically correct close button on the door key switch panel and I was attempting to ascertain what the perceived risk was to taking this supposed shortcut method.

It is perhaps worth noting that on Merseyrail 507s and 508s, there are no passenger door controls, and upon arrival at a station all doors on the appropriate side are released and opened by the guard (AIUI) and then all closed upon departure again by the guard, unless things have changed in the last couple of years.

No, that's still the case. Even the 508s that had them as built had them removed for Merseyrail, though the panels remained in place with blanking panels over them. The passenger control panels were then used for fitting staff controls as vaguely visible in this photo:

Though at the refurb they were moved to the side:

But I think the OP was referring to the use of passenger door controls on Northern 323s.

Closing the doors from the guards panel in the PTS of a cl-323 can be done in 2 ways.

1) Press 'close doors' and observe doors closing. step onto train and press 'close local door'. Hustle alarm will sound and door will start to close after a couple of seconds. Once door is closed give RTS

2) Press 'close doors' and observe doors closing. Step onto train and press red passenger door close button - door will start to close immediately with no hustle alarm - then press 'close local door'. Hustle alarm will sound even though the door is already closing. Once door is closed give RTS

Option 2 is quicker and just as safe

I believe it's more common on DMUs-I seem to remember 170s have brakes linked to interlock?

But out of all stock I have signed-377,455,456,313,319,321,317,365-all can roll with doors open. Infact even at speed the brakes won't apply if the doors are opened on a 317. The first you may know a door is open at 100mph is when you feel that you arnt getting enough power and turn round to look at the interlock light. Although that is rare with most stock.

There have been a number of station rolls in 365s over the past year for some reason, no one really knows why so specific to that stock or why the sudden rise.

Have 317s not been modified to prevent this? I'm fairly sure the ones I sign have been. Our Electrostars have brakes on the interlock so I'd guess 377s were the last in the series not to?

The GA 317s have been modified so of they loose interlock the brakes apply. The GN ones have not so we can still do 100mph with doors open.
