Travelled in DBSO 9707 being pulled by 37423 on Friday. It was like a sauna inside. Still, much better than the usual DMUs though.

Agreed, the middle coach was like a sauna yesterday (saturday), but the rear coach had working AC so thankfully wasn't sauna like.

-----

Although stopping at pretty much every station on the coast (bar Braystones & Netherfields) did make the journey seem to last forever, although the engine noise when it accelerated made up for it :)

Apologies if I've missed this but could somebody tell me how many Class 37s and carriages are used on the Cumbrian Coast LHCS please?

Thanks in advance

1 set 37 + 3 x MK2SO + MK2 DBSO

1 set 37 + 3 x MK2SO + MK2 Brake + 37

I believe both sets will be 1 x 37 and DBSO very soon

Cheers 47802. I'm hoping to go and sample the LHCS soon and I was wondering what stock to expect

Go and do it while you can. I did it on a rest day from work the Tuesday before last. I only did the 10:06 from Preston to Barrow but it was brilliant. Took me back to my youth. Shame they have to have bars on the windows but it was great fun.

I've been really looking forward to doing it for a while - hopefully at the start of next month if time allows. I've never been behind a Class 37 before either so it'll definitely be a new experience

Totally agree, did it this Tuesday picking up the 10:06 ex Preston from Lancaster (37402) then 11:38 ex Barrow (37423) to Ravenglass then the 15:33 from Ravenglass to Carlisle with 37402 again. Those window bars do make reaching the door handle a bit of a struggle, nearly got my arm wedged in one, don't know how Michelin Man would manage:lol:

The coaches were unbearably hot on both sets today. Had to stand in the vestibule the entire time, not a bad thing with the audible experience on offer!

37423 and DBSO on one set, 37402 and 37401 on the other.

Also saw 37409 with one mk2 and a DBSO through Carlisle on presumably a test run so the top & tail arrangement looks to be in its last few days.

It was the same on Tuesday, especially in the front coach of the 15:33 we took from Ravenglass, I noticed the automatic saloon doors were pinned open on all coaches of both sets so that wouldn't help the aircon system, if of course it was actually operational in the first place.

I'm also itching to go on them :D but won't get the chance before October. I was quite surprised to find it is possible to get from London to Preston in time for the 1004 departure, but that requires a stupid-o-clock 0530 departure from Euston (leaving home about 100 minutes before that) otherwise the fares are astronomical. Instead I'm looking at staying overnight in a hotel in Wigan or Manchester after doing a Cheshire Day Ranger the day before, and then completing the full run to Carlisle before coming back to London.

I should be able to do it in one day quite easily providing there's no delays. I'll probably aim for the 10:04 departure as well (should be able to get there without getting up too early) and go all the way to Carlisle and then perhaps stop off somewhere on the way back for an hour or two if the weather is nice before heading back home

It is, but even now the cheapest Advance fare for the second half of October is £51.15 with my railcard. No way am I paying that, especially as a hotel room is cheaper! The 0530 costs £13.20, which is more like it, and the 0643 via Birmingham is £20.15, not too bad. However, they both mean waking up early and will only lead to me being very tired and falling asleep somewhere  :P

On Tuesday just gone, I used the 09:16 TPE (350) Man Picc-Glasgow Cen. due in Preston 09:57 there are £6.10 advance singles available on this to Preston/Lancaster if you decide to stay in Manchester, if that helps?

Forget Manchester to Preston or Lancaster. You can get "TPE&Connections" Advance singles for Manchester or Wigan N W to Whitehaven (and beyond) for £6.75 :o although when I've checked, that cheapest tier isn't usually available, at least the next one is £7.45 . Those along with "VTWC&Connections" are also available if you wish to travel via Carlisle, and will be my ticket starting from Whitehaven. Whether a further split is needed elsewhere on my way back to London depends on if I can get the cheapest £36.30 First Advance on either the 1449 (via Trent Valley) or 1510 (via Birmingham) from Carlisle. If not, splitting at Wolverhampton and using "Chiltern&Connections" onwards is cheaper (I really don't want to use Standard Class in a Pendolino).

409 & 423 showing on TOPS. Presumably each with DBSO. But not sure which ones on which working

Both working are now DBSO and have been all week, according to WNXX 409 should be on the ones that start at Barrow, on the one that finished at Carlisle yesterday a 142 was substituted on the last 2 working although this wasn't anything to do with the loco or train apparently, indeed I think it followed the 142 down fast after a late start and then went back to Carlisle ECS via the West Coast!.

Am I right (having looked at posts for Spring Bank Holiday 25 May) that the LHCS should work as normal on BH Monday? Thanks in advance.

The Prince of Wales in Foxfield is a great pub to stay and watch these trains go by esp if you stop overnight!
