As the title really, I'm just wondering why this service was cancelled. I was booked on it at Crewe through as far as Watford Junction but I've ended up on the 1729 to Euston instead (works out better as I'll end up getting to my final destination two hours early). So why did it end up being cancelled at Preston?

No available driver or TM most probably. Preston is a change of crew stop

Ah that would be logical thanks guys. I did check RTT but last time I looked it was just showing as having arrived at Preston not having been cancelled.

There's been crewing issues at PRE all day today, I was through this morning and a number of services delayed or cancelled, may be short in Scotland also?

Crew shortages all over the network today.

It's an August Saturday, the sun's out...

...and the company is far too reliant on staffs goodwill in working on their days off to run their service.

Just thought I'd finish that sentence for you I case people start getting ideas that staff are going sick/AWOL due to the weather.

I was under the impression that Virgin had not agreed Rest Day Working with ASLEF. Not sure why it's slipped through the net as these things are normally done in good time. Will have to read up in the next Journal.

there isn't a rest day ban at present, however there was going to be one, then it got extended out of the blue and is due to run out fairly soon. Whether it gets extended, that's a mystery at the moment. I certainly wouldn't argue with what a-driver is saying about goodwill, let's put it that way. As you can imagine, full holiday allocations, a Saturday afternoon in the six week holidays. Any industry might struggle to cover work at this time of year.

If there was a general ban on rdw what sort of % of new drivers would need to be recruited and trained across the industry?

The crewing issue is the presumption I came to at the time of this happening - it was terminated somewhat inexplicably!

Is it anything to do with the guard fatality at Leylland?

I think that happened earlier in the week

Not as simple as industry wide, it depends on the TOC. Some TOCs run with a full compliment. Others can be 1/3 short of the amount they need.

Even without a rest day ban, this is one of the hardest times of year to staff trains. Normally, the maximum amount of people permitted to be on annual leave will be doing so, which will eat up most of the staff spare each day on the roster. Sickness will add to that, and leave companies reliant on rdw to get everything covered, but there won't be that many available for it since less people choose to voluntarily come in on the aforementioned sunny Saturday in Summer.

If the rdw ban comes into effect, things will only get worse.
