Train I catch has still got these notices on the toilet. Is this still valid?

Or do all trains use tanks now? I thought it'd been changed to this because of h+s issues.

BTW. Train is ATW on Maesteg - Cheltenham. Old 145? 143?

Anything built by BR will have external discharge sanitary equipment up to class 158. I think later classes have retention tanks. The Chiltern Mk3s have been rebuilt not to have this.

yes it is still an issue - take a look at the space between the tracks next time the platform is vacant.

hopefully in the near future the brown cloud will be no more!

158's in the Leeds area still have the "Do not flush in the station" sticker, however, I understand these now have retro-fitted retention tanks.

Have the 318s always had retention tanks from the beginning, or are they having them retrofitted while undergoing refurbishment at Doncaster?

I know that the 334s & 380s had them from the start and the 320s had both a toilet and a retention tank fitted during their refurbishment at Doncaster (they had neither when originally built)...

This was on a previous thread, I'm not sure how to copy it. It's basically all 14xs, 150-156 plus some 158s plus HSTs

AFAIK some do, some don't. With Northern I think it depends on which TOC they were with previously, but you'll need someone with some degree of inside information to know which ones do/don't.

I remember reading on the old Northern Railways forums that Northern were tanking their 158s - although it may only have been one ROSCO/part of their fleet?

As I understand it 158s were built with a provision for tanks to be added, but in the end they all entered service without except the 159s.

I always thought it was a shame that the units that became 159/1s weren't taken from the handful that had the 400hp engines to match the existing 159s, though the centre cars would still have been 350hp. Similarly it would make more sense to me if Northern had added centre cars to the WYPTE units, but that's just me being autistic and looking for a pattern!

I think that's a common joke everywhere. Someone was going through the AGA Mk3s not that long ago and adding "except in Ipswich"

The joke is an old one but I'd use it to jovially query the point made about 319s having tanks, and I can't believe that I'm writing this. 20 odd years ago I remember after a night in the pub bravely but urgently popping into the lav of a first batch Thameslink (they had the darker grey NSE livery around the cabs, 319/0 I think, and used on the less salubrious routes at the time, you had to be made of stern stuff to use the loos) and I'm convinced there was a 'do not use' sticker there by the handle. 'Except in Luton' was the predictable addition, I can't possibly be making that up!

This thread reminds me of the folk tune ditty written by Mike Harding in the 1960's to the tune of music from a ballet....

"Gentlemen will please refrain
From urinating while the train
Is standing in the station here at Crewe,
Please restrain your natural function
Till we get to Middleton Junction,
Where there's really bugger-all else to do"

Sorry to drag off topic, but it would have made more sense to me to have kept the centre cars in their original units, and if need be transfer the units. It always seemed a bit odd, splitting them essentially for the fun of it and presumably ending up with 3 cars with unbalanced hours.

I know just before the slammers were retired, that I left a steaming hot one on the level crossing at Milford when going pass to Waterloo, train stopped I could see that I wasn't in the platform so flushed.

They couldn't say anything as the coach wasn't at a station platform.

The first trains with retention toilets were Class 317 (1981, on the Bed-Pan line, ironically). All EMUs since then are so fitted.
Intercity stock: Mk4 (1990) and later.
DMUs: Networker Turbo (class 165) and later (including the 159s).
Some classes have been retrofitted since, but it's a slow process.
The DfT wants rid of non-fitted stock.

159s were not built with tanks, they were fitted at Rosyth when they were modified from 158s to 159s before entering passenger service.

I can assure you as a resident of said Junction there is now even less to do now than there was in the 1960s
