It would seem those 156 are not going anywhere.

Abellio's winning franchise bid assumed all the Sprinters would remain with Scotrail, with all the Turbostars being released by the introduction of EMUs and HSTs.

However, Transport Scotland decided to alter that so the units released would be
  • 10 x 2 car 156s
  • 8 x 2 car 158s
  • 29 x 3 car 170s
http://www.transportscotland.gov.uk...Redacted Franchise Agreement - CU version.pdf

However, given Scotrail have written off a 156, I think it may now be 9 x 156s released.

Has it been written off?
It has been removed from the active pool because it isn't active anymore and leaving it in the active pool would effect the availability figures for that depots 156s!
If it is written off why is it still inside at Springburn? Is it normal to waste valuable interior space on a scrap asset?
If it has been written off why hasn't it been stripped for bits and broken up?

It isn't at Springburn, it is at Brodies at Kilmarnock where it was being repaired and has a new owner, having been bought from the insurance company.

Scotrail (old) found that the repairs exceeded what the insurance value was and the insurance company wanted to write it off. The ROSCO was paid the insurance money and the insurance company has now sold the unit on, reportedly to a well known group who also own a few HSTs. It has never been part of Scotrail (new) fleet of cl.156.

It is quite badly water damaged but repairable, at a price. It is reported that other groups were after it but they weren't quick enough. Someone else got there First!

Thanks for the answer Clarence, so it is an insurance write off rather than a full write off and will be back in service soon, I was close as to the location! ;)

Hmm. A well known group who own a few HSTs. Interesting post, Thanks Clarence, I wonder where it's future may lie with next then?

Capital F being a clue perhaps?....

I thought the same... Surprised this wasn't mentioned in the dedicated 156478(?) thread!

Seems odd that that particular company would buy it, as they no longer run any franchise that operates 156s*.

*=TPE hire-ins notwithstanding.

So is it true that £200,000 of work was carried out trying to fix it before the insurance company declared it a write-off?

Potentially money to be made from leasing it out even if First can't find a use for it, given DMUs aren't in plentiful supply at the moment.

First are shortlisted for the next Anglia franchise.

A potential shoe-in for Anglia or even potential for GW I wonder? Yes it really would be in a class of it's own in GW land but then as are technically the 150/0s.

It's Govia bidding for Northern as Govia Northern Limited. Keolis Go-Ahead Limited (65% Keolis) are bidding for TPE.
True, should have remembered that Govia is already a joint venture between Go-Ahead and Keolis (It would have been more accurate if I had written "Go-Ahead/Keolis" instead).

If a car was involved in an insurance write off it must be striped/scraped and can't be re-insured in the future, so how would that affect the 156 if that's the case?

It can be the case for cars, depends on the write-off category. The worst two categories do not allow the vehicle to be registered again, they differ in what components are allowed to be re-used on other vehicles.
The car write-off process is standardised and legislated, as thousands of write-offs occur every year. For a train, it's case by case as each event is unusual, unique in character and the vehicle of much higher value.

It's the difference between insurance companies being embarrassed into a policy after a number of high profile deaths following "cut 'n shut" bodges and an organisation that insures an item of high value via a Lloyds specialist.

This will be interesting. Whichever organisation was First to snap up the unit has, assumming it can be repaired for a reasonable cost, acquired a very useful asset.

Wrong, completely and absolutely wrong!
There are 4 categories of insurance write off (for cars)
cat A- car must be destroyed, no parts can be reused.
cat B- car must be destroyed but certain parts can be removed for reuse.
cat C- car can be repaired but insurance company has decided that repair would not be cost effective. Car will require a VIC check if repaired.
cat D- car can be repaired but has been written off as cost of repair (using new parts) would be higher than retail value of car. Easy repair for home mechanic using recovered parts, I have done a few myself, some will require a VIC check but most wont!

Are these bogie overhauls not just a standard traction & rolling stock lifestyle event?

Probably - £200k wont buy you much in railway terms
