Newhaven Marine boat trains

Hello all,

Does anyone have the departure/arrival times for Newhaven-Victoria boat trains in the late 80s?

I've got the 1986 timetable here (the year of the short-lived InterCity Newhaven-Manchester trains), and there's no mention of any Victoria services.

Instead, there are a couple of rather obscure trains from the West Coastway...

0514 Littlehampton-Newhaven Marine (arr 0631)
0805 Portsmouth & Southsea-Newhaven Marine (arr 0937)
1735 Newhaven Marine-Portsmouth Harbour (arr 1935)
2105 Newhaven Harbour-Portsmouth Harbour (arr 2259)

Can anyone shed any light on these workings? Any info would be appreciated

Can't do 1986, but on the basis that the daytime ferries went at 0700 and 1000 returning 1345 and 1700 (we took our car that way in 86), the 1980 times of 0750 Vic due 0910 return 1726 due 1847 probably still applied. That is, assuming they still ran - which I think they did, until the Seacat took over in the 90s and Dieppe port relocated out of town.

The early morning train was for duty-free day trips and I thought there was a corresponding late evening train.

The London services were only available to continental passengers which is why they never appeared in the GBTT - though IIRC some were a single 4CIG detached at Brighton (rather than Lewes) from a fast.

I remember in the late 70s a couple of trains a week from Scotland to Newhaven Harbour worked by a Class 45 forward from Cricklewood.

Thanks for those timings it would be good to find out which services the Newhaven portion detached/attached off/onto....the mystery continues!

I used to work on the International side and I remember that for the evening service the boat train left Victoria at 20.40. It was such an ingrained time that even now, if I happen to see a clock at 20.40, I think "Night Dieppe".

That's brilliant what years would that have been? Do you know which year the boat trains to/from Newhaven stopped being a working in its own right and became merely a 4CIG portion on/off a domestic train?

Well I was there from '87 to '91 and I THINK it ran at least until then. I have a Thomas Cook from '87 showing the 08.04 and 20.40 to Newhaven Marine and the 05.25 and 17.20 back. If you want to know the times of boat trains then getting your hands on old copies of Thomas Cook's Continental Timetable are the way to go. Don't know when it changed to being a portion but all of those trains are showing as stopping at East Croydon and Gatwick Airport but not Lewes.

You wanted arrival times as well - 08.04 ex Vic arrived Newhaven Marine 09.12; 20.40 arr 21.54.
05.25 ex Newhaven Marine arr Vic 06.43; 17.20 arr 18.39.
