How customisable is SWT Desiro PIS?

Its a 350 again in the original livery before LM..Ive also seen "Milk-and-Beans" and "Numptytown" on LM 350s whilst working at Euston

Not to do with the Desiro but I have seen quite a few Northern 158s running around with mystery excursion on the digital display.I shall try to dig out the picture

I know exactly who that was!! He was a Bletchley driver - went to drive for Northern a couple of days after this was done. Guards cannot program the PIS (or I perhaps wasn't shown in training!!) but the drivers can. On the 150 on the Bedford route, they are manual wind-round ones, with loads of diffeent destinations on. I once did a full round trip with "Shirley" showing on one end, and "Whitlocks End" showing on the other!!!

"Test Train" is my favourite one on 377s/171s - probably because it is actually the only novelty one, now the custom text is locked.

However, I saw a unit in Horsham sidings the other day displaying "Crystal Palace". And I tried to get a 171 to show "Sutton via Mitcham Junction" the other day, but it wouldn't even do Brighton via Haywards Heath, let alone that.

Must admit I find the ridiculous ones most entertaining (and they aren't misleading because they are so ridiculous). Less good is things like "Express" on the second blind on Bedford-Bletchley, as that might confuse, particularly given the tendencies of some TOCs further South of missing stops out when things run a bit late. Amusingly ironic though

Southern's Electrostars do (or at least every one that I've been on has done so).

Southern use to announce which coach one was in and possibly display it too but they stopped doing that for some reason. Perhaps it was considered to helpful. Lol.

They could add that to some of the Euston Tring services when they run them non stop to Tring due to being delayed on their inward journey.

I rarely customise the PIS as it's such a pain to actually do.

These days it only seems to be announced either if the next station requires SDO, or if the train is to split later.

Back to SWT Desiros, I remember seeing a photo of 450s at Windsor & Eton Riverside that were showing "#JeSuisCharlie", in the days after that attack. Probably not a good idea to display anything political .

And several times during the Wimbledon points replacement in January, I saw 450 triples where all three units were displaying something different. Even if they were showing everything the same, usually it was something manually entered despite many services having the same calling points.

Can you set a custom stopping pattern on them, or a short working?

You can put place names on the side, front & interior panels, but you can't put calling points on the sides.

Sometimes I put on a 450: 28 Ascot or 28 Guildford and on the side pods Guildford via Camberley or Ascot via Camberley. (Boredom!)

Even the old route codes + destination on the side panels, as it can be useful to platform staff as they'll know where the train has originated or what its destination is.

Empties sometimes have 5*** so the signallers/staff can see what it is.

I don't muck around with it, as it just causes trouble. And it only needs some stroppy manager and the brown stuff hits the high speed ventilation device. :roll:

How much control do onboard staff have over the passenger information boards on these trains? I ask because I see a lot of pictures where they say silly things and I wanted to know how feasible that actually is.

Can they be manipulated on train or are they preset?

Also for passengers! Back in the day, regular punters would soon learn the route code(s) for their train. Shame they're not used anymore.

I remember seeing posters at New Malden telling passengers which numbers to look out for for services to Richmond/Shepperton/Surbiton and Hampton Court. As a Northern student used to one train an hour, it was quite novel to see trains with numbers on the front like buses!

Unfortunately today's management see route or headcodes as out of date and irrelevant, so you'll only see them if they are input manually.

Not on a train but at New Street station a few days ago, the PIS screen displayed a service to Tysley depot calling at Tysley depot only. This service is operated by London Midland. That made me chuckle.
