Travelling at about 1745
This is what I have found

Catch a Thameslink train to East Croydon cost 2.50

At East Croydon alight and touch in with a contactless debit or credit
card.
Change at Clapham Junction
Get train to Syon Lane

Touch out with the same contactless card for an offpeak fare 2.40.
A total of 4.90
versus a single to Syon Lane bought at Gatwick which costs 9.25 with railcard

My question :
At East Croydon will they have to exit the station to be able to enter again with a contactless card or are there validators on the platform (as I think I have seen at Clapham Junction)?

There are no validators at East Croydon. There are gates at the Sussex end of the platforms (up the ramp) and also at one end of the new bridge at the London end of the platforms.

Where did the 2.50 fare come from?

I'm a bit lost on that one as well. I know the fares for a single are around the £5.00 mark. (sometimes they get to around £5.10, then drop again), and ex FCC/TL ones were only about 10-20p less.

That's probably the case - I'd included the railcard discount but couldn't find anything quite as bargainacious!

Of course, using an Oyster PAYG with railcard discount loaded would reduce the East Croydon - Syon Lane journey to £1.60.

I have more than one PAYG Oyster both with the same railcard dicount loaded as my friend has. May I loan him an Oyster or do they have a note of the railcard number on the Oyster it seems like a no loss for the toc

Technically no. If the expiry date of both railcards is the same then it's unclear how they might notice, but otherwise it is not permitted to share Oyster cards with either discount or travelcards loaded.
