How to pay a Fare.

Hi.
Most nights after school I go from Smithy Bridge to Mills Hill as neither Smithy Bridge or Mills Hill have ticket machines that accept cash or change.And as most of the time the guard does not get to come round. Is they any way in which i can pay the fare.

If you go to a station with a ticket office you could "bulk buy" the tickets for every day of the next week, for example if you go to Manchester for the weekend.

You could find the guard and do this too but it would probably take a while.

You mentioned ticket machines - obviously card payments, or book a ticket online and pick it up from the ticket machine before you leave. But this is all a bit extreme.
But if they provide no facilities for you to pay at all, it is not up to you to find another way to pay! So I would not try too hard if they aren't.

If it's most nights, get a weekly season ticket - £11.85 a week if you're under 16.

5 singles is £10 for a child though, I was under the impression it was a one-way trip... and if it is a return trip "most nights" would mean off-peak, so a return would be £2 a day as well... and even if they had a season they would still have to buy it :P

Thanks for your help, but as for booking a ticket online and picking it up it would not be possible ad I don't even have a credit or debit card lol. Thanks also for your suggestions.

This post seems like a breath of fresh air, somebody who wants to pay their fare. I do have one concern though, if a person makes a journey knowing they are unable to buy a ticket at either end could they end up with some undeserved hassle?

Not if their intention is to and they also have the means to purchase on the train. They wouldn't be guilty of a Byelaws offence as they haven't had an opportunity to purchase before boarding, and it can't be said that they are intending to avoid payment as they have the means to pay. It's not their fault that they don't have the opportunity.

There's every chance it will - but I strongly suspect that Northern will not be able to provide confirmation of anything related to these machines! They can't even load their own fares into them correctly
