Hi all

Apologies as this has been covered before but there was a 170 sitting at Haymarket Depot this morning with smashed windows down the side of the train and a front end that looks like it has hit something. The windscreen is smashed too.

Anyone have any idea what happened to it? Apologies, I didn't get the number.

Was between Elgin and Keith actually, but yeah it was looking pretty bad when it was stabled in Aberdeen a few weeks back. Surprised it's still looking in a bad way. Looks like bad damage, but would have thought it was fixable, and would have thought they'd have been on the job by now?

Or is this the first unit going down South? :P

EDIT: Here's a picture if anyone's interested.

It will be repaired but waiting for quotes from the various repair companies. Ususally Barclays, Brodies and Glasgow works tender for Scotrail units.

Ahh. Didn't realise that's how it worked. Thought there would have been a contract to cover all repairs to the fleet. I learned something new today.

In the old days it would have been in a BR Workshop straight away and possibly back in traffic by now instead of going through the lengthy process of tendering for contracts to repair. All this time a unit out of service.

Did they get it from Aberdeen to Haymarket through sandwiching it or was it just able to be driven from the undamaged end?

Reviving this to report that 170432 currently sitting in very public view at Haymarket minus the damaged carriage. No idea where the repairs are happening.

As for how it got to Haymarket, "Crossover", I have no idea. Certainly the non-damaged end appeared to be functional (and indeed that's how it got to Aberdeen), so I suspect it could have been possible for it to go all the way to Haymarket like that as an ECS service, although perhaps someone inn the know might know what happened?

Again reviving this to report that 170432 was seen in Platform 4 at Glasgow Central this evening.

It was running ECS between Haymarket and Shields depots.

We were discussing this elsewhere, actually. It's very uncommon and certainly isn't seen in regular service. A few years back, this same unit was shortened to two carriages whilst the middle one was off for repairs, and it made an appearance on at least one run to/from Shotts.

Like Andrew, I've certainly never seen a 170 in Glasgow Central with my own eyes.

Saw it when on my way to work my last train this evening. Very unusual sight in the central. I'm presuming it's off the wheel lathe At Shields depot as that's usually the only time the appear this side of the river.

Would be nice to get them for the Central to Carlisle jobs as they are horrendous in a 156 due to the ridiculously small driving area on journey over 2 hours!

Indeed, Here is a photo I've just come across on the net of it.

In fact, wasn't this the ScotRail 170 Which was once fitted as part of a trial with the more powerful Class 172 engine? Which subsequently managed to break itself as a result IIRC?

Whilst Im no fan of 170s Il agree with you there, that route needs more suitable traction

my own personal view is that it should be wired sooner rather than later as a handy diversion for WCML Anglo Scottish services plus frate as well as the Dumfries Kilmarnock Glasgow Services but in reallity, the Kilmarnock to Glasgow is most likely about all we'll see any time soon, sometime in CP6.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Whilst Im not one of these people who wants to wire up everything, if I had unlimmited (within reason) funds, wiring this route along with Ayr to Kilmarnock and the Shots line and buying a fleat of 2 plus 2 standard class only AT200s with end gangways, along with some clearance, station upgrade and platform extentions would be a prioritty as it would mean Stranrar could be a 2 unit shuttle to Ayr and a lot of 156s freed up as well as the option for direct Kilmarnock and Dumfries to Manchester, Brum and London services and through workings from Edinburgh fast via Shots.

Does it get enough traffic to justify being electrified (how long is the route)?
It's 116.5 miles long and sees 9 passenger trains southbound, 8 northbound that traverse the full length of the route from Glasgow to Carlisle and vice versa, Monday to Saturday. There are additional services between Dumfries and Carlisle at the south end and between Kilmarnock/Barrhead and Glasgow at the north end, the latter of which might be frequent enough to warrant electrification, but unless anybody knows different then I would envisage electrification of the complete route as being a low priority, extremely unlikely before the 156s (which are being refurbished for the route) are life expired.

Freight traffic in recent years has consisted mainly of merry go round coal trains between the Ayrshire collieries and English power stations.

Electrification of the route is included as one of the possible network enhancements in the Abellio ScotRail Franchise Agreement, I seem to recall. The first part of the line to Barrhead (and East Kilbride) is sure to be electrified as a priority after the Shotts line is completed, then extending that electrification to Kilmarnock isn't too far-fetched either. I don't know about the extent of clearance works that would be needed on the line from there to Gretna but I would think that the business case for doing these would also encompass using the line as an electrified diversionary route for the WCML.
