Noticed this was on the NRE website before 5.30am so before any passenger service hit the area - anyone know what service (freight?) it was?

Northern local stopping services terminating at Wakefield Westgate with a bus to Swinton
XC services diverted (presumably via Doncaster without stopping)
Presumably the pointless York-Sheffield (via Pontefract) service isnt running at all!

EDIT - took a look at the NRE website:

Northern Rail services between Leeds / York and Sheffield via Moorthorpe will be replaced by buses between Wakefield Westgate and Swinton, with journey times being extended by up to 45 minutes.

Given the York-Sheffield service via Moorthorpe doesnt run via Wakefield, that replacement bus service might be a bit odd :)

6Y31, loco 66613 derailed.
Loco was re-railed last night and work is ongoing to complete the planned track relaying, which could not be completed as planned overnight.

Excuse my ignorance if this is a silly question but ,,,

Why are freight train derailments so frequent compared, thankfully, to passenger services ?

Havent a clue, but I would hazard a guess at heavier loads make derailment more likely? Rolling stock less maintained than passenger services?

Planned engineering work over the weekend meant buses Swinton to Wakefield obviously the derailment at some point over the weekend has put them about 10 hours behind

Yes it was planned works...possession booked 2355 Friday to 0505 Monday. Derailment happened at around 1700 yesterday due to suspected high ballast during ballast drop.

Ah so it was a maintenance train in the local area rather than anything booked that would appear on RTT? Fair enough :)

Among many reasons there are two which spring to mind immediately:

Freight only lines are not usually maintained to the same standards as lines used by passenger services.

Freight wagons have to cope with huge weight differences, so the suspension may be a compromise which doesn't work so well when unloaded. So an unladen wagon may be less tolerant of track faults.

I heard about this on our local radio station this morning. From what I have seen above, technically the reason for the line being closed is an engineering overrun - this being as a result of the derailment yesterday. I would guess from a PR point of view though, the public will accept a derailed train more readily than what they would an engineering overrun?

So much for a replacement bus on the York-Sheffield via Moorthorpe line:

1330 SHF-YRK cancelled - http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y37814/2015/07/06/advanced
1502 YRK-SHF cancelled - http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y39333/2015/07/06/advanced

Cant see any other services, has it been cut to one per weekday now?!?!

Seems the other two aren't showing as they were well and truly cancelled in the TT!

Looks also like the EMT this morning may have gone via Barnsley (do EMT sign the route between Fitzwilliam and Doncaster) judging by dropping reports at Wakefield and then regaining at Swinton (losing a whole load of time in the process)

Ah - you meant via Doncaster!

I was wondering how it picked up at Wakefield Westgate and passed South Kirkby Junction, and then gained the Barnsley line! ;)

This morning BBC Radio Nottingham during each travel report kept announcing that all trains between Sheffield and Leeds were being replaced by buses. Surely the Nottingham to Leeds service was not affected as it runs via Barnsley.

BBC local Radio do need to check the accuracy of their reports because all day Sunday they were announcing that there were no trains running between Corby and Kettering so trains between Nottingham and London St Pancras will be disrupted.

I think both of these announcements would cause confusion to passengers.

Yeah, I didn't really think logically before I wrote that. It must have gone via Donny to pick up reports where it did!

The XCs diverting seemed to pick up hardly any delay on some of their diverts from the ones I looked at
EDIT: Scratch that, can't now find any that didn't pick up much less than 10 mins on diversion

I really dont see the point of these trains running via Doncaster. Who wants to get on a train at Doncaster to London that takes 3 hours when you can wait an extra 8 mins at Doncaster and get on a VTEC one that gets you into London (at the terminus next door) more than an hour before the EMT one?

Same goes for anyone getting on at Leeds and Wakefield Westgate really, cant imagine this service (and the other early morning Leeds-St Pancras) is that popular, unless it is significantly cheaper than the others.

But what if your journey is Wakefield-Leicester or Doncaster-Luton?
The EMT HSTs run to/from servicing at Leeds, and might as well stop somewhere useful.

Well, neither of the HST's stop at Luton ;)

Run them via Wakefield Kirkgate and Barnsley then, give Barnsley and Meadowhall a service back to London, its not as if Wakefield Westgate and Doncaster have a shortage of London services is it?

The 0525 Leeds (EMT) to London calls at other places in the East Midlands en-route to London. In my experience the train conveys a reasonable number of passengers despite the early hour (0557 ex Doncaster). Many alight at Sheffield or Derby. It is a convenient InterCity connection at Sheffield into the 0600 Leeds to Plymouth (also an HST), same platform at Sheffield.

Clearly it is also useful for keeping route knowledge between Leeds, Doncaster and Sheffield.

I can find no weekday EMT services that operate via Barnsley, so probably route knowledge is lost. Oh, incidentally all EMT services to/from Leeds (in service or empty) are HSTs so couldn't call at Meadowhall - they are too long to fit.

Whilst the reasons mentioned above may be factor it is worth noting that this incident and the derailment at Langworth are both on lines that see a fair share of passenger traffic.

Only open the doors in certain carriages then, happens elsewhere.

And direct connections to Derby already exist from Doncaster, as well as numerous ones to Sheffield.
