The PIS at Leeds for the 1640 XC to Reading has underneath it

"Customers for Leicester and St Pancras change at Sheffield".

Is that simply because it's the only southbound XC service from Leeds that doesn't call at Chesterfield, or is there another reason?

I'm personally wondering why any traveller to St Pancras wouldn't just take a VTEC service and walk across the road.

Me thinking someone had some spare time as I've never seen "local service for Wakefield Kirkgate and Barnsley" underneath the Sheffield service before

It was done because this service offers a connection onto the 17:29 from Sheffield. As there is also a Northern service at the same time, passengers with Advance Tickets were boarding the wrong service resulting in them missing the connection. That why the 16:40 Northern Sheffield is shown as Meadowhall

Or using a similar theory to stoppers being given a false destination (i.e. Oxford/Reading to Paddington stoppers going to Ealing Broadway) to try and get passengers who are staying on board to the final stop to use a later train as it is quicker?

Happens a lot with services to and from Leeds. The Brighouse service on that departure board is actually a Huddersfield via Bradford service, but as even the Dewsbury stopper is a fair bit quicker they're always listed as Brighouse. In fact, that particular one runs right through to Sheffield via Penistone (albeit technically as a separate service from Huddersfield). There used to be an evening service via Dewsbury that was extended through to Sheffield but this changed about a year ago. Back then it was advertised at Leeds as a service to Dodworth as anywhere beyond there could be reached quicker via Wakefield and Darton.
