Generally speaking (out of interest) would anybody happen to know if the first train out of KGX sits at a specific platform each and every day? or does it just get routed into whichever one the signaller feels like?

And if that's the case, does it generally happen at all termini? Or is just pot-luck as to how the signaller feels?

Cheers, Maks.

AFAIK, this is the case at all major stations. Trains are routed into their designated platform unless a signalling failure or something prevents access. Usually, the platforms never change.

At Glasgow Queen Street, however, platforms are pretty much allocated on a "First Come First Served" basis, with no strict platforming to my knowledge. I presume other stations follow this as well.

That is true at Queen St, except for the issues of when a 6 car is to be formed from 2 3carTurbostars, IME this tends to happen on 2, 5 or 6/7, rarely on 3/4 which are the shorter 6-car platforms. Obviously P1 can only take 2 or 3 car trains.

Each train has a specific platform It needs to be in.
In certain locations, yes. But generally, no.

At King's Cross, there are constraints such as certain platforms can't hold long trains (e.g. P9-11 can't hold NXEC's) and you can't directly reach the fast lines from platforms 10/11. Platforms 1-6 are not suitable for trains heading for the slow lines as they have to cross paths of other trains. Other than that they don't "need" to be in a specific platform!

Yes, every train has a booked platform but that's not the same thing.

Do many station areas run on ARS for train platform allocation, or does ARS just tend to covere normal running areas, with platforms etc being done by staff who know the requirements of the incoming service, the TOC control instructions, fitter access, service departure schedule etc.

Kings Cross platform 9 and three quaters is a bit of a pain for the ARS. The power box staff dont like overriding it either. A lot of head injuries result from people trying to catch their train.:)

Scarborough seems to use different platforms every day for the same trains, no matter what the length.

For instance, I get the 14:47 most days and this is usually formed of 2 x 185s. So far it's departed from Platforms 1, 2, 3 and 4.

West Highland services are due to have a set platform.

I always find Scarborough rather strange, as there are clearly far too many platforms for the number of trains that use it. 5 platforms for 2 trains per hour isn't it?

Marylebone and Paddiington are ARS and it causes some right headaches.

Same at Liverpool Street, ARS can generate some funny routing or poor regulation.

That explans why delay reasons in the Daily Log at NXEA for ARS is 'OH-ARS'

They mostly stick to booked working timetable platforms(well, when I arrive our trains usually do!)But any platform can be used, except 9,10 and 11 which are our use(FCC) exclusively because they only hold 8 car 365's

It depends on time of day,any diversions from Moorgate etc
