Arriva Trains Wales are currently advertising a position for secondment to implement the new units.

https://www.comeaboard.co.uk/recruiter/users/jobsearch.php?&id=1016

"Please note-this position is only available to candidates employed within Arriva Trains Wales. If you are not eligible to apply for this position, your application will not be considered.

The era of Avantix, as the rail industry’s chosen on-train and gate line ticket issuing system, is drawing to a close after thirteen years and Arriva Trains Wales will be introducing new state of the art technology from 2016 onwards.

This will be a significant, positive development that will deliver tangible benefits for our conductors, ATE’s and stations teams and brings welcome improvements to the retailing equipment that we currently use in the ‘day job’, in addition to affording us the opportunity to deliver further innovation for our customers.

To ensure that this change over process is a seamless and as problem-free an experience as possible, we are looking for a dedicated project manager to take the lead in moving us forward on that transitional journey! This is a secondment opportunity until April 2016.

You will need to have a proven record of successfully delivering a large project such as this and be able to work methodically against extremely tight schedules.

Good communication skills and a proactive approach towards keeping PTIS users up to date on developments in a timely manner will be of utmost importance, including liaison with trade union colleagues.

The successful candidate will need to regularly engage with our IT team, revenue and other key stakeholders (both within Arriva Trains Wales and Arriva Group) and participate at all associated meetings relevant to the overarching project. The successful candidate must be prepared to travel to business meetings outside of the ATW network (such as to London), as required by the project group.

Supporting the hardware installation at each of the ATW locations where Avantix equipment is currently based will form an intrinsic part of the project work.

A good background knowledge of existing rail ticketing systems is desirable, although not essential.

In addition to the development of the next PTIS for Arriva Trains Wales, you will also be the lead contact for a separate ‘ITSO’ retailing trail on the Conwy Valley line.

On-call responsibilities will form part of the PTIS Project Manager role, but only if already included within the successful candidates existing job role."

Any solution based on an 'off the peg' mobile phone will be a disaster, in my personal opinion. They will be lost, stolen, the screens won't survive, the batteries won't last... It's a nice idea but in practice I can't see it being a huge success. However, we shall see!

Ruggedised phones are available...

IMEI numbers will be logged, spare batteries provided, and the phones branded "PROPERTY OF <TOC NAME>"

Basically stolen phones can be rendered useless as a software lock can be sent, and the IMEI blacklisted meaning it becomes "bricked".

Yeah, windows phones can have an company account added to them which means that the company can restrict what apps are installed on the device, also WP devices are bitlocker encrypted by default.

They're talking about android, however it can be locked down as well.

Windows phone is fast becoming a very popular choice for this sort of application as it seamlessly integrates with existing Microsoft enterprise systems like Exchange and Windows Server, whilst pretty much every other platforms require third party software for mobile device management.

For clarification, Windows Phone devices are not bitlocker encrypted by default, but this is easily done and can also easily be mandated as part of a company policy.

The hilarity of Android being "secure"...

Will this app use the NFC part of Android (both for writing products to the card and for checking cards)

On the one hand, you would hope so; on the other hand, you'd hope they'd use a phone that doesn't have one of those stupid features like a metal back which severely attenuates the signal... (my phone has one of those, annoyingly).

In terms of battery life, there is a phone coming from Lenovo with a 4500mAh battery. Almost double what's in a Samsung Galaxy S6.

Not sure what the screen on time would be, but I'd guess it could be ten hours or more.

Honestly, I don't want a phone-cum-ticket machine. I want a phone for being a phone and a ticket machine for being a ticket machine. Today's buzzword is compromise, so we no doubt end up with something that isn't that good as a phone or that good as a ticket machine!

I'd rather see a tablet used than a phone, larger screen would be far easier to use than a phone plus it would be easy to display and read some of the wordy details about tickets and restrictions.

Unfortunately, Maps has stopped.
. While the phones we are currently issued with are the latest fangled android models many guards actually miss their Blackberrys for the ease of use and reliability.

The guys at my place are still issued with a BlackBerry, with that unlikely to change before franchise end. It's a weird bit of kit, the Blackberry, and not particularly easy to use, but you get all the e-mails you need, and any amount of information from "Control".

Well, there are 'phablets' that are probably more appropriate (larger screen and battery, plus a SIM card slot and possibly also a pen) and some tablets also have SIM slots - but are possibly a little too big.

A 5.5-6 inch screen is surely good enough for managing tickets on? Battery life is indeed key, but if you pack in a large enough battery and get something that supports quick/turbo charging then I can't see any problems with it lasting all day - and you could always top up on a break.

With Android, there are so many different devices to choose from it's scary - and I am pretty sure there are many ruggedised models that I'm not generally aware of, just as Motorola and others still make devices based on Windows Mobile (the original, not the return of the name as Windows Phone renames itself with V10 onwards).

Who remembers the old NCR ticket machines in booking offices in BR days? Think Arkwright and his till in "open all hours" (the original not the rubbish remake) and you won't be far off what I am talking about!

To be fair regarding battery life, that is an easy one. Even if you want to go with off the shelf phones, then surely some kind of external battery is possible? be it a battery pack plugged into the usb port or a replacement battery if the device has that option? I've recently bought a replacement battery for my Galaxy S4 that has only double the stock batteries capacity and there is one out there that has triple too.

Could charger points be installed in the guards "office" where batteries could be plugged into to charge up?

I can't actually find a link. It was announced at MWC and I think it had three SIM slots too (was designed primarily for people travelling).

There's a P70 handset from February with a 4000mAh battery, but if I can find the other one I'll post the link later. Need to double check it was actually Lenovo now!!

I'm looking at the Microsoft Lumia 1320 myself, any idea what the call quality is like as the Sony Experia Z1 is shocking poor and this is despite Sony "repairing it three times"...

As to ditching Avantix, I could see one day onboard and station based station having tablets such as a iPad with a mobile printer for tickets although onboard would more then likely be smartphone based.

Call quality on any Lumia should be second to none, they are still Nokia technology who have always been praised for call quality. The 1320 is fairly old now though, you might consider the 640XL.

I had a look, what are the battery life like on them though? To keep this on topic, I wonder if Arriva will go with Windows 10 Mobile, Android or iOS?

Interesting...

Is this an new development in the long-quiet ITSO-based GoCymru trial, or something completely different?

The Xperia Z1 supports HD voice and I never had any problems with mine. That is of course unless you put an O2 SIM in it, whereby it drops to half rate and sounds terrible - but that's the network, not the phone?

I'm on the Three network and unless I use a hands free kit, the phone is crap :(

Odd. I'm on Three too, which supports HD Voice and makes calls sound fantastic. Of course, you don't always get to use it (if calling another network) but Three doesn't have half rate coding.

Had a Samsung S4 and a loaned Lumia 530ish, great call quality but Sony Z1, nope i wouldnt recommend it to anyone let alone a TOC like ATW....

Never had any problems with both my lumia 610/625, Huawei Ascend W1, and my older WP's, and ex british gas Panasonic CF-P2 and MIO A701 (on Virgin (Orange network), Vodaphone and O2).

As for ruggedised stuff, what about a Toughpad i.e http://business.panasonic.co.uk/computer-product/toughpad/FZ-E1
or http://business.panasonic.co.uk/computer-product/toughpad/FZ-M1

Toughpad looks nice but bet it's expensive :(

Probably, but panasonic are known for the quality and durability of their tough line. Plus being IP65 rated even welsh and scottish weather should be no match, it certainly would survive a drop onto the track/platform. The lifetime cost would probably lower though.

I used to throw my CF-P2 at things just for the fun of it :D (only paid £25 so didn't really care), and I didn't manage to break it!

EDIT: according to this http://www.toughnrugged.com/fz-e1--fully-rugged-handheld-tablet-1106-p.asp website £1,045 ex vat.

Indeed. Let's just settle with the fact that there are loads of potential devices out there that could do the job well.
