If Kite159 can drag himself away from a day's travels that is! ;) Making me outrageously jealous, but in the same breath nostalgic for the days when I would just pop down to London when I fancied it on a day off. Popping down, in this case, consisted of a 20 minutes or so bus ride into town, followed by around 3 hours of HST haulage from Swansea to London Paddington. Memories...

I did that PSUL track years ago, back when 313/1s ruled the roost and there was no sign of new trains whatsoever (I'm going to guess this was 2005), at silly o'clock going into Willesden Junction Low Level. Can't believe how long ago this was!

I managed it on one of the last weekend diverts last year, only because I somehow ended up there! :D

22nd May – A Trip on the Great Northern Electrics

The aim of today’s little Friday trip was to visit the many shacks on the Great Northern network which are within the London Zones, mainly on the Hertford loop plus the couple on the main-line. After a nice little walk to the station to jump onto the Waterloo bound service, today formed of 159002 for the gentle run into Waterloo, clearing this particular unit for 1000 miles (my 1st cleared for the magic 1000). I had noticed a few mini red devils (456s) floating around on the run into Waterloo so with catching the first thing back out to Vauxhall (duds 455728/455726) to see if I can get some additional 455/456s in the bag.

First back into Waterloo was dud 455848 leading winner 455901, with the next departure a 456-456-455 set, with winners 456020 & 456004 leading dud 455731, back to Vauxhall. Next up back to Waterloo was dud 455904 leading winner 455855, and a quick dash as the next departure was another trio, lead by dud 455701 with winner 456024 in the middle and dud 456019 at the back. Again to Vauxhall and a quick hop across to dud 455874 leading winner 455740 back to Waterloo. The next 4 main-line suburbans were all duds at this point so I went across to the Windsor lines, with a choice. The next departure was winner 455729 with dud 455737 behind it, which I took to Vauxhall. Quite a productive hour with 4 more 455s (11 left) and 3 more 456s (17 left) ticked off in my book.

A Victoria line service took me to Kings Cross St Pancras, where the next service towards Finsbury Park was in the hands of a trio of dud 365s, 365532/365539/365506; I could have waited around for the next service, but decided to just jump on board, shacks were waiting. At Finsbury Park, I couldn’t help noticing the remains of a former platform to the side of P7/P8 island, the next 313s were heading up the main-line so I was going to give it a miss, until I saw what was on it, my last GN 313. 313030 with 313033 took me to Alexander Palace (running fast), where I couldn’t get RTT to work to give me a plan. The Hertford loop has a mix of semi-fasts and stoppers in the peaks, so some of the stations are missed (i.e. Crews Hill, Palmers Green, Grange Park). Annoyingly the next couple departures to the loop ran fast from Finsbury, so it was back to Finsbury on 313043/313026, before jumping on 313041/313064 to Winchmore Hill, my first new shack of the evening.

313048/313059 was running a bit late which was good as it allowed me to get an unexpected shack in the form of Palmers Green, before the next service from Gordon Hill arrived in the shape of 313048/313059 (at least building up the miles which previously were at bus-stop levels) to take me to the island platform at Bowes Park. 313134/313052 were next to take me back up the loop to Gordon Hill, where a service was waiting in the “bay” (looking at the track, I doubt much has gone north from platform 1 in many years (if it is still even connected), and was there once another track to the side of P3?

313054/313032 was in the bay which took me to Grange Park, which is one of the stations where to get to the other platform needs a walk via the moon, but I had a few minutes which was tight. Next up was 313063/313044 taking me to the boundary of zone 6 at Crews Hill. What a strange station to finish the boundary at, seems to be in the middle of nowhere, but I had a little wait of 15 minutes before the next service back down south, with 313051 leading 313037 back down to the final station on the loop at Enfield Chase.

I could either wait 20 minutes for the next service south, get on a bus or walk to Enfield Town, or get on a bus (thanks to Google Maps) to New Barnet. After a quick stop to grab some food from the little Tesco Express, a double decker bus on route 307 took me to New Barnet, where sadly due to the bus running late and with me heading in the wrong direction meant I missed a service at New Barnet, and with the frequency dropping to half-hourly decided to give Hadley Wood a miss and 15 minutes (or so) later, with going deaf by announcements that the next train at the gated P2/P3 will not stop, 313040/313050 took me back to Finsbury Park. Next Kings Cross service was a pair of dud 317s, so I decided to give them a miss and head down to the Victoria line for a nice little run to Oxford Circus, and Bakerloo to Waterloo. Arriving 15 or so minutes before the 21:20 departure to Yeovil Junction, and there wasn’t a lot happening departure wise. Decided foolishly to jump on duds 455740/455874 (yep same pair as earlier) to Clapham Junction, with 159107/159101 being the pair to take me back to Grateley.

Mission mostly complete, 313030 rolling up was a bonus to clear my GN 313s.

23rd May – A 458/0 to Poole

A slightly strange railtour today, taking a pair of 458 ‘Juniper’ units down to Poole via Haslemere, to say farewell before they are converted to 458/5s. With free travel to London on SWT, I confused the guard on 159006 (5:59 departure), which I took all the way to Waterloo. I had an hour and a bit to spare before the tour departed at 9:00. First service I spotted which was heading out was a pair of 450s to Alton, which called at Clapham (technically only to pick-up) & Surbiton.

Winner 450027 was leading winner 450109, a double winning 450 set, quite rare with my numbers of required 450s decreasing. Took me to Clapham Junction, where I must say I had terrible luck with any required units, 377s were duds, 455s were duds, 378s were duds, although I kept moving which probably didn’t help things. Next service which I caught was dud 450544 leading winner 450022 on another Alton service (shows how long I wasted) taking me to the edge of the zones at Surbiton.

I had a couple options, either a single dud 455 on a semi-fast, or waiting for a pair of units from Basingstoke which ran fast to Waterloo. Deciding to give the dud a miss, and was rewarded with duds 450563 & 450022 on the run to Waterloo. The tour train was on the platform, so after a quick visit to Tesco & Sainsburys on Waterloo Road to pick up some supplies & a newspaper, headed to P5 to board 458014/458006 which were the two 458/0s going on tour today.

I had treated myself to First Class, and was lucky to grab a table seat in the leading coach of 014, giving my phone a quick charge using the power socket. Nice enough trip from Waterloo, picking up at Clapham Junction before running out towards Surbiton. The bogie of 8014 was making a lot of noise, coming off the main-line after Surbiton and onto the Guildford new line and onto Guildford, pausing for a couple minutes for a driver change and down to Haslemere going into the middle platform for a brief pause of around 10 minutes for the first reversal of the day and for the first photo chance.

Departure was on time (after 450014/450041 arrived & departed, chance of a photo missed if 450014 was on the rear, 450014/458014 next to each other), next calling point was Aldershot, and with a nice non-stop run through Guildford and onto the North Downs line coming off at Aldershot junction, passing a lovely pair of green 456s and into Aldershot. Another brief wait (timetable to allow a service from Alton to Waterloo to go in front I would imagine), for another photo call (although are 458s rare in Aldershot, didn’t they used to do the Ascot – Guildford services?)

Rolling back towards London now, passing Ash Vale with the Ascot line going off to the left, and over the SWML and down into Woking for the final reversal of the outward leg. First time departing from P1 heading in the down direction for me (which just leaves P6 to try and get in the down direction, doable from the first service from Salisbury with a 2 minute connection), going onto the slows and getting up to speed for a nice run to Basingstoke for a brief pause (driver change?) before setting off towards Winchester. Non-stop through Winchester and slowed down as it was caught behind a delayed freight service. The service paused briefly at Southampton P2 before setting off towards Bournemouth, being delayed now so the wait at Brockenhurst would be reduced to 10 minutes, to allow a Weymouth train to go in front. Nice little run down towards Bournemouth, pausing outside the station to allow the Weymouth service to split and the rear unit going to the siding.

Very brief wait at Bournemouth where passengers had the option to alight and head into Bournemouth, or stay on until Poole, which we arrived in on the “up” platform, 10 or so minutes later than expected, but still with enough time to visit some shops, and grab some supplies (and enjoy the sunshine).

Back to the station an hour or so later, and back on board with several announcements that this was a private charter train and the train to London would arrive afterwards, and departed to pick passengers up at Bournemouth (where a double 220 departed from the other platform heading to Manchester, although looked like the rear unit was out of use). Another brief pause at Brockenhurst to pick up the few passengers who alighted earlier, which was the final stop. Nice non-stop run via Southampton Central, getting up to the top speed of the 458s at 90mph a couple times along the line, flying through Winchester before slowing (caught up with the Manchester XC).

Back up to speed, crossing over into the Up Fast to the west of Basingstoke and going non-stop Basingstoke (happy days), crossing into the Up Slow line for another high speed run towards London. A passenger on the opposite table had a GPS speed app on his phone, and had it as going through Woking P1 at 85 mph, I’ve done that sort of speed on the Up Fast (XX:35 from Basingstoke which calls only at Clapham & Waterloo), but not on the Up Slow. However we had caught up with a Woking – Waterloo service, so we slowed down, (can’t remember if we actually stopped) before setting off at Wimbledon, heading left onto the district line, passing the back of Wimbledon depot, and onto East Putney.

It was nice doing Point Pleasant in the day-light, to see the old flyover, and track the other side of the Windsor line, and East Putney in the daylight. A brief pause to allow a 455 to pass before heading towards Clapham, where passengers alighted, and finally towards Waterloo, heading in the reversal line (P1 at Queenstown Road/Vauxhall), and rolling into the former Waterloo International side at P20.

Arrival was pretty much on time which gave me a couple options, so I decided to aim towards the Upminster/Romford line and also the Greenford line, to clear those shacks which can’t be done on Sundays. Down to the Jubilee line and onto a service towards West Ham, the district line was closed so the C2C platform was quite busy, and in rolled 357034 & 357226 to take me towards Upminster. Making use of the toilets, I couldn’t help noticing the ancient “London Connections” map on 226. Not as old as the maps on the London Midland 321s, but still the date was December 2008. It still had the old Thameslink service to Moorgate on.

Anyhow into Upminster, where I crossed to P6 to board the “One” operated service to Romford, today formed of dud 317515, which I took to the only intermediate station on the line at Emerson Park. I had a couple options, either wait 10 or so minutes for 317515 to roll back in to take me back to Upminster to C2C it back towards Central London, wait a bit longer to Romford to AGA it into London, or catch a bus to Romford station.

A Single decker Stagecoach bus on route 165 took me to Romford station, where again I had a couple choices, either a stopper to Liverpool Street or a delayed fast service, RTT was suggesting both would arrive around the same time. My mind was made up to see what was on the stopper, and if duds wait for the delayed service from Colchester and catch that towards Liverpool Street. When winner 315841 rolled in, with new super-dud 315821, I decided to take that towards Liverpool Street. Deciding not to alight at Stratford and straight into the station and down to the SSL to jump on a Circle line service towards Paddington, which due to engineering works, the circle line was being a circle and after Edgeware road, carried on towards Paddington, not the usual P15, but instead the Praed Street platforms.

I had a quick look to see what unit was on an Oxford stopper (dud 165), before my eyes was caught on a certain 360 on Heathrow Connect duties, 15 minutes to spare before the next Greenford which gave me an idea as I boarded 360205 (the one with the nice 2+2 seating which is normally found running backwards and forward between T123 & T4, and strangely no bins) out to West Ealing. Google Maps suggested it would take around 14 minutes to walk to Drayton Green, along a road and across a path. I did it in about 10 minutes, enough time to see what the other unit was on Greenford duties (another dud 165).

A few minutes later dud 165124 rolled into Drayton Green to take me up the line to South Greenford, and in the time it took to come back, I had a plan, walk from Castle Bar Park to West Ealing to try and catch the Heathrow Connect back to Paddington to give me 25 minutes to get back to Waterloo. So I alighted from 165124 at Castle Bar Park and walked the mile back towards West Ealing. I was happy the Greenford branch is covered, and when I arrived back at West Ealing with a good 5 minutes to spare before the return of 360205, I was extra happy.

Rolling into P12 (and remembering the best door is the 3rd car as it lines up with the gateline), I rushed to the Bakerloo platforms to board a Bakerloo service to Waterloo. Arrival at Waterloo was at 21:10, which gave me time to get some food from WH Smiths, and to board 159016 for the trip back to Grateley. A nice day, interesting rail-tour down to Poole and some shack attacking in the evening.

Anyhow some pretty pictures:

24th May – A completely random day in London

Random as in I had no real plans of any sort, couple ideas to shack attack the Thameslink stations within the zones and also Hadley Wood, plus get up towards Watford to do Coxley & Chorleywood when on a 1-9 Travel-card, but apart from that no real ideas.

Nice little drive to Andover, and to the platform to board a busy 159013 for a straight run into Waterloo, pausing briefly as the slow lines were closed, so arrival was around 5 minutes down. To the underground and I got lucky with a Bakerloo which ran to Harrow & Wealdstone, the next 2 services were listed as Queens Park terminators, and after 30 minutes of bouncing around, the service arrived into Willesden Junction around 8:55.

Across to P1, where the next Stratford bound service was starting from, 378216 rolled into the P2 bay which the member of staff through was going to be the Stratford bound service, but was incorrect when 378220 rolled into P1. Jumping on board, and with RTT open to see where to alight (and seeing nothing heading back towards Willesden for a good 30 minutes, so decided to alight at West Hampstead. The service departed from P1, went around the curve linking the low-level platforms to the North London Line, a PSUL movement, which is new track, pausing briefly to change from DC to AC, and carrying on along the NLL (which just leaves the curve from the NLL towards the WCML heading north, plus the peak 172 special which avoids Gospel Oak and heads onto the NLL).

Alighting at West Hampstead and walking to West Hampstead Thameslink, my eye was drawn to the next Bedford bound service which was forming a stopper. Winner 387125 was leading dud 387126, which took me to my 1st new station of the day at Elstree & Borehamwood, the fast line platforms were being used this morning. A brief 15 minute wait before the next southbound service rolled in formed of 319439 taking me back south towards Mill Hill Broadway. Crossing over to the northbound platform for the next service, found me on dud 377508 leading winner (at last a winning 377/5!) 377522 back to Elstree & Borehamwood, the edge of the zones. 15 minutes later a busy dud 319453 rolled in, standing room only after Mill Hill Broadway, but took me to the final required station in the North Thameslink route within the zones, Hendon. Just leaves a few on the south Thameslink route to cover another day.

After a walk to Hendon Central on the Northern line, via Sainsburys (and passing a Tesco Express), it was onto a northern line service bound south via Bank, where I alighted at Kings Cross St Pancras, to head to Kings Cross to get Hadley Wood covered. Good timing with a mere 5 minute wait before the half hourly stopper up the ECML. 313036 was leading 313122 for the nice run to Hadley Wood, another strange station to end the zones at, but covered. The entrance to the fast platforms had a massive gate, but still it was announcement overkill, with the next train at P2/P3 is not due to call at this station. Overkill for stations with no access to platforms with fast services, but for others with access to platforms with fast services, nothing at all.

Anyhow, 313025/313041 rolled in to take me back down to Kings Cross, and I was down to the SSL platform. Next up was a Circle line train, which I decided to jump on to Great Portland Street to await the Watford bound metropolitan service behind. Gave me a chance to cross of another station, as I boarded the Metropolitan service, finding a transverse seat for the long distance run (underground wise) to Coxley.

Fast over the platform to board another metro line service back to Moor Park, and having just missed an Amersham bound service (was pulling out as the service from Watford arrived), so I had a 15 minute wait, which I should have probably made use of, and do a quick shack attack heading south. Ah well, as I had a PNB and headed back to the platform to jump on another metropolitan service towards Chesham, which I took to Chorleywood, my final Chiltern station in the zones and on the Aylesbury line. Anyhow, I had a couple options, so decided to jump on dud 165006 to Chalfont & Latimer, with another metropolitan service back to Rickmansworth, with dud 165024 providing a fast to Harrow on the Hill.

I couldn’t help noticing that the frequency of Chiltern services doubles in the late afternoons on the Aylesbury line, which could be useful for 165 hunting on another day. Next Chiltern northbound service was dud, so I gave that a miss to board a metro line to Preston Road before a Moorgate bound metropolitan service. A strange sight for me as it would be the first I have seen trains in the bays at Moorgate, and also “micro-grinded” that track. The driver announced at Barbican, that any passengers wanting Liverpool Street to change at Barbican and await the next train as it would be easier than changing at Moorgate (which is true, as Moorgate has many steps from the westbound bays and the eastbound platform), but still some passengers with large bags ignored the driver.

Next up was another metropolitan service this time to its usual terminus at Aldgate with a circle line back to Liverpool Street. Heading to the mainline station itself, which was rather quiet due to the GEML being closed, first departure was winners 317665 & 317511 on a Cambridge service, which I stayed on until Tottenham Hale, a dud 317/8 was on a Stratford bound service, so I gave that a miss when winner 379007 rolled in with 379003 behind on a service from the Airport.

RTT was suggesting the next departure from Liverpool Street would be another airport run, with had winner 379018 on the front with dud 379019 behind, so back out to Tottenham Hale, with the next Liverpool Street bound service being from Cambridge, and had dud 379023 leading winner 379012. Back to Liverpool Street, where I decided to start heading back, early start on the Monday for the tour, so down to the SSL with a Hammersmith & City line service to Moorgate, a Northern line service to London Bridge and Jubilee line service back to Waterloo. 10 minutes to spare before the 17:15 departure, formed of 159001 & 159010, which took me back out to Andover.

A busy varied day in the capital :)

Moorgate Bays:

25th May – Celebration Express

A nice little charter trip to Liverpool to celebrate the arrival of the 3 Cunard Queens. Sort of leading up in the last week of waiting to see if would go ahead with the strike, with pathfinders waiting for when the strike was thankfully called off. The departure time had been changed, brought forward from 6:40-odd to 5:20, so it was going to be another early morning drive for me, as I arrived into Salisbury station around 5:05, paying for parking (quite reasonable £2) and grabbing the number of the 67 in charge.

67026 was in charge, dud from the Shropshire Union tour back in January, the route was up from Salisbury, to Warminster, Westbury, Bath Spa, taking the Dr Days curve to avoid Bristol Temple Meads, pausing for 20 minutes at Bristol Parkway for a XC service to get in front, heading up towards Cheltenham where the train came off the train and diverted non-stop via Worcester Shrub Hill & Droitwich Spa, to join the main line again to go up the hill towards Birmingham.

Taking the Camp Hills line and carrying straight on for the first new track for me, that little freight only part underneath the WCML, and onto the Birmingham – Peterborough line for a short distance before the 2nd new track at the western curve leading onto the rather boring Sutton Park line (the eastern curve being covered in December last year), out towards Walsall and onto the direct line to Wolverhampton, taking a left at the junction to go via Wolverhampton to gain access to the Shrewsbury line. Up the Shrewsbury line, pausing briefly before the station, and onto the station itself at P3 for a crew change, 5 minutes later, where I noticed the former bays at P1 & P2, missing track, along with the “avoider” line between P3 & P4 having a large section removed, and out towards the Wrexham line. Pausing briefly at Gobowen to allow the barriers to be lowered at the level crossing before continuing up the line, passing many closed stations, as well as Chirk, Ruabon & Wrexham General before arriving into Chester.

Required 66109 joined the train at Chester, where it was strange as the whistle blew and the train started moving, probably catching some passengers out as it stopped and 10 minutes later started moving again. Departed Chester and out towards Helsby, and Frodsham before taking the one-way curve down the WCML joining at Halton junction. It is quite a peaceful journey around the Halton curve, the old signalling from the days when it used to be signalled for 2-way operation rusting away, and onto the WCML. Afterwards the 67 picked up some speed to fly through Runcorn and towards Lime Street, which we arrived around 15 minutes late.

I had a few options (having no interest in 3 ships which I’ve seen down Southampton along with many other various cruise ships), firstly was to get a rover ticket from the ticket office, and back to RTT to see what was floating around. I mistakenly took down the number of the 350 as not being required (where in fact it was required), so I ended up on dud 319371, to Edgehill

My first Northern Electrics 319, interior wise is pretty much the same as a Thameslink version, very purple inside, and what appears to be a regular key to open up the new door opening panels. Crossing the island platform, I couldn’t help noticing how strange Edgehill is, appears to be a lot grander than it once was. Winner 319380 took me back to Lime Street, where the next departure from P1-P6 was a Blackpool bound required 156462 & 156488, first stop Huyton.

Huyton currently has 4 platforms (with 2 additional tracks put in during the electrisation works), however P4 isn’t in use as the track comes to a sudden end, which I can only imagine Network Rail are waiting to take over the line to install some points to allow the inner lines to be used by fasts with the outer lines for stoppers. Anyhow dud 319368 rolled in to take me to Roby, seems to be a short distance as it was announcing “We are now approaching Roby” rather soon after departure, and please remember to take your hand luggage with you.

Winner 319369 was next which took me back to Edgehill, where a quick interchange to the other platform island saw me onto Manchester Oxford Road (or Oxford Road as it is called by the platform announcements) 142014 & 156486, riding to West Allerton, with a short wait before a returning service formed of 142053 & 142066 back to Lime Street, where I managed to get the crowd control person to allow me to go against the flow to board the Blackpool bound service (rather than exiting the platform area to come back into it via the main entrance).

Winners 156464 & 142003 was the next Blackpool train which took me to Huyton, with a brief wait before winner 319365 took me back to Broad Green. Next up was a service bound for Warrington Bank Quay, and when winner 142045 arrived with dud 150144 [last seen on a Lincoln - Saxilby service] I could only assume they had run out of 319s. Jumping on the luxury of a 142 to Whiston, a station with a long path to the bridge, took me a few minutes to get to the other platform, where I was rewarded with winners 150112 & 150139 back to Huyton, where I had a rough idea to head back out towards Whiston to get the next station along that route covered, however the 319 which arrived was 5 minutes down (and the connection being 4 minutes) and was dud, so I gave it a miss.

Good call, as winner 319361 took me to Wavertree Technology Park with its 86 steps from the platform to the bridge, so I waited a few minutes before winner 319386 took me to Edgehill, another quick platform change saw me onto Oxford Road bound 142009 & 142034 to Mossley Hill, with 156486/142014 making its way back to Lime Street. I had a rough idea of heading over to do the London Midland 350 to South Parkway to get that station crossed off, but I saw required 319364 on a “cancelled” (to RTT) Wigan service, which I took for the first stop at Wavertree Technology Park. Next Lime Street service was delayed and was dud 319371 (again), where I alighted at Edgehill. Sadly the Oxford Road – Lime Street which called at Edgehill (and was a pair of unknown DMUs) got in front of 371, so my final Northern service of the day was 319369 again, back to Lime Street.

Exiting P1-P6 via the crowd control system to see the station was quite busy, crowds heading back from the boats, so after visiting Boots for a meal-deal for later in the evening & Burger King for now, I drifted out towards the platform the charter train was waiting, showing my ticket to gain access to the service, to take me seat back. 66109 was leading now (so I can tick that off in the book, 66s are bonuses for me). Departure was on time and via Warrington (as it was the only way to get back to Chester), so out via Huyton with the final bit of new track for me with the western curve at Earlestown station, back onto the WCML via Warrington Bank Quay (which passed me by), and onto the Runcorn East line back towards Chester. Arrival into Chester was 15 minutes early so a good chance to get some fresh air. A pair of merseyrail units arrived and departed (a 507/508) rather quickly, as well as another pair of 508s, before we were called all abroad, the 66 still attached, but with the 67 now in control.

Out towards Crewe, into Crewe P12 where the 66 was detached and we set of racing a XC to Bristol Temple Meads, which we overtook at Stafford, heading towards Wolverhampton, taking the avoider towards Walsall, through Walsall onto the Sutton Park line, and back towards Kings Norton, pausing for 15 minutes at Longbridge station for a XC 221 to Bristol Temple Meads to overtake (which could have been the same XC we overtook at Stafford), and darkness came down as the train settled back into path, down the route taken this morning, apart from using the direct line (not via Worcester), and arriving back into Salisbury a few minutes early at 00:25. I and another passenger (who I was sat with on the Buxton trip a few weeks ago) decided to move forward in the train after Warminster, it was pretty much empty and so for the last 5 minutes we were sat in the First Class area.

Useful as the train arrived into Salisbury at P4 and it was a shorter walk back to the exit and with a nice little drive home, an end of a busy day in Liverpool, with 18 winning Northern units, and 8 new shacks on the City Line, saves a job when I’m up there in June

Crikey that took a while to read! Good to see you're all caught up now, and as always an enjoyable read. Looks mighty strange to see 458s in Poole, I just wish I'd got on with it and booked the tour and got the time off!

Ridiculously busy time had in Merseyside, which will have knocked out a lot of requirements with Northern no doubt! 142003 annoys me particularly, the buffer blocking thing! Hopefully it produces on one of my trips to the North West this year and it will finally stop annoying me

First class read. You do manage to get about quite a bit! Emerson Park stuck out as the odd shack that you were able to scratch and I fully understand why you bailed onto a bus to get out of there as when you attack it from the Upminster end, it's 18 minutes for the return. Attacking from the Romford end, the wait is a more reasonable 12 minutes. Your current rate of shack attacks will see you clearing out the Travelcard area very soon - exactly how many are still on the list? As for 159002, I'm slightly envious of your huge mileage that you have accumulated. 002 is one of my lowest mileage 159s and I have not logged any haulage with it since 1994. Send it my way please, coupled to 158885 if you can! Looking forward to hearing about your next trip out.

'North' London NR is pretty much covered, apart from the future LOROL stations (Seven Sisters line & Chingford), the stations in C2C land apart from Upminster to Fenchurch.

South London NR (including those stations in SWT north of the river) is rather poor, that will be my next calling point to try and clear some Southern/Southeastern/SWT/Thameslink shacks.

Emerson Park, I couldn't decide if I was going to attack it from Romford or from Upminster, if I had missed that C2C service I probably would have gone up to Stratford and hope for the best for a fast to Romford

I've done Saturday's Report, but left it on the PC at work, so here be Sundays. Pictures to follow

31st May – A day in “London Eastern” land

With both TfL Rail and London Overground’s takeover of a couple of the suburban lines out of Liverpool Street, meant I had a day planned out of Liverpool Street. But first a mild diversion to clear out a slightly annoying shack in C2C land. The 07:02 service this morning from Andover was formed of my lowest mileage 159, 159022, taking it off the bottom of the distance board (159103 is now bottom of the list, but I know I won’t be getting that one for a while as it’s on holiday in Doncaster). Mild highlight of the trip into Waterloo was using the Up Slow flyover at Wimbledon as the Fast lines were out of use. I decided to stay on board right to the end at Waterloo.

Down to the Jubilee line to board a 96 stock service, which was heading to Charing Cross, causing confusion to tourists wanting a Stratford bound service, however when taking a picture of the unusual destination screen, disaster hit as I reckon my travelcard must have caught onto my phone and exited my pocket without me noticing, as when I got to the gateline at London Bridge to reach in my pocket (where I foolishly didn’t put it back into my little ticket wallet) it was nowhere in sight, thankfully the gateline assistant allowed me to pass and watched as I purchased another travel card. Extra expense I wasn’t expecting to have on the day, which put me on a bit of a downer as I headed to P3. First service was a winner, and was 465181 leading dud 465237 for the short hop down into Cannon Street.

Down to the Sub-Surface Lines, with a District line service taking me the short hop to Tower Hill, where I had a nice walk to Fenchurch Street, I say nice walk, but it was raining. For the first time ever my travelcard opened the gates at Fenchurch Street, and I headed to the platforms. I had one of two options; either stay on the 8:50 to Upminster and double back to Barking, or stay on the 8:50 to West Ham, double back to Limehouse and await the 9:10 service. On spotting the 9:10 featured a required 357 I decided to go for option 2. Duds 357211/357015 were on the 8:50 service, sitting in 015, at the tables (I assume the 357/0s were originally designed to have a small First Class section behind the drivers cab, hence the tables). To West Ham, where I alighted and waited for the Fenchurch Street bound service, formed of duds 357022/357021 back to Limehouse.

Crossing over the platforms, noticing how narrow they seem to be to await the arrival of dud 357023 leading winner 357203 for the short hop to Barking. Passing a London Overground 172 going over the flyover towards Gospel Oak, crossing over to P7/P8 to board the Grays service formed of dud 357214 to my final C2C shack, Rainham (London) . All C2C shacks are now cleared, thanks to my linear bashing festering on Friday, happy days indeed. Anyhow I could either wait 30 odd minutes for 357214 to make its way back (hourly service on Sundays), or catch a bus to Romford. Outside the station is the bus stop with a double decker bus waiting, on a route 103. First stop Rainham so I had the chance to grab the prime seat, the front seat on the upper deck.

Makes a change going by bus and ~ 20 minutes later, Romford station was reached, and I jumped on the first pair of 321s which was waiting to depart. My required AGA 321 list is massive (65 units), so the odds were in my flavour to get at least one winner. Nope duds 321314 & 321338 were the pair, as I alighted at Stratford, never mind I thought, as I awaited the arrival of the stoppers behind (being slightly late into Stratford meant I missed a pair of stoppers towards Romford). My first TfL rail service was a winner, 315830 leading dud 315825 which took me into Liverpool Street, where the next stoppers were getting ready to depart in the next 5 minutes (after the pair of dud 321s towards Southend), and I noted down another required 315, so it was onto the stoppers. Dud 315845 was leading winner 315851 back out to Stratford, with winner 315822 along with dud 315841 for the run back into Liverpool Street. Once more my eyes were checking for next movements out, a pair of 321s were first, with a pair of 315s out afterwards.

Both 315s were needed, the front 321 wasn’t needed, but the rear 321 was needed, so it was a quick hop over to get onto winner 321436 which was behind dud 321347, for the short trip back out to Stratford, remaining on the same platform (fast lines were closed), to await the arrival of winners 315828 & 315837 out towards Forest Gate, with a short connection before duds 315858/315819 took me back into Liverpool Street. The 315s on the next TfL service was dud, but once more I had a required 321, dud 321348 was leading winner 321308, out towards Stratford, where there was some delays. A service from Norwich was late, so the semi-fast and the stopper was being held up for the freight train to make its way down the line, so I decided to bail and jump onto the central line back into Liverpool Street.

Dud 315848 was leading winner 315857 for my final Stratford hop, where the central line took me back into Liverpool Street as I didn’t fancy a 15 minute wait for the next service (seems the semi-fast had been terminated at Stratford to go back out) and thinking it would most likely be a returning pair of 315s, so back to Liverpool Street, where my attention changed to the freshly Orange side of the station, running at a reduced frequency due to a shortage of train crew, so no service every 15 minutes, more of a mixed bag of services with gaps which I needed to work alongside if I wanted to get some shacks done. First up was a choice, a dud 315 was heading towards Cheshunt which I could have caught for a short hop to Bethal Green to get the service behind towards Chingford. As it was a dud I decided to give it a miss. Anyhow, dud 315806 was on the Chingford which took me the 7 miles to Wood Street, a station on top of a bridge, along wet steep stairs.

I had 15 minutes to kill so I went outside and spotted a Co-Op, which was visited in search of lunch, and so I went back to Wood Street, and waited as winner 315809 rolled up to take me to Highams Park, strangely the only station I passed which didn’t have new name boards. Didn’t have long to wait before 315806 returned to take me back to my final shack on the Chingford branch at Clapton. Dud 315813 arrived to take me to Waltamstow Central where I jumped onto a Victoria line service which eventually reached Seven Sisters, pausing for a couple minutes outside the station to allow a Seven Sisters starter to clear the station.

Nothing northbound for a few minutes, but something southbound, and RTT giving me a good connection at Stoke Newington, which I took winner 315814 to. Next service up the line was an old friend, 315806, taking me to Bruce Grove. 15 minutes before the next service, 15 minute walk to the next station (to Google Maps), or a bus. It was still raining so I went to the bus stop and scored another double decker on a route 259 service, which took me to White Hart Lane, where I eventually found the station down a side street and went up the stairs with a couple minutes to spare before fresh dud 315809 rolled in to take me to Turkey Street.

Nice little 20 minute wait at Turkey Street, before 315809 rolled back in to take me to Silver Street. My original idea was to take it to Southbury and a bus/walk to Bush Hill Park, but with the limited service meaning only an hourly service towards Enfield Town, I put that on hold for another day. Could also make for a nice walk, anyhow I didn’t have long to wait at Silver Street before winner 315811 arrived from Enfield Town to take me to Rectory Road where I had a +1 connection for a northbound service, which was made. Dud 315803 took me back north towards Stamford Hill, my final station on the ‘Core’ route. 15 minutes later dud 315814 arrived to take me to Seven Sisters, where I went down the underground and caught a Victoria line service one stop to Tottenham Hale.

First service I could catch was a Stratford bound service, which was formed of winner 317651, so I jumped on board for the short trip to Stratford, where I had a bit of a wait. A pair of dud 315s later, and a “set-down” only pair of 360s arrived from Ipswich. I hadn’t been on a AGA 360 since my great AGA bash last August, and I had forgotten how thread-bare some of the seats are. Anyhow leading was winner 360107 with dud 360109 behind, taking me the short hop to Liverpool Street. My attention once more turned to the other side, and some 379s. Next service was in the hands of winner 379021 with dud 379011 behind, and my phone went on for a much needed charge.

15 minutes later, I alighted at Tottenham Hale, and couldn’t help noticing that the front unit was rather empty, but the rear unit appeared to be full with passengers sitting on their suitcases. Anyhow Tottenham Hale is a bit of an odd station for a major interchange, no lifts from the southbound platform to the exit, just a lot of stairs, next couple services towards Liverpool Street were duds, so I decided to call it a day and head down to the Victoria line for a nice run to Victoria. My mission was clear, I needed a BZ6 to Andover single, so it would either be Southern land or LO land, so I decided to chance it with the Southern TVMs at Victoria, and success they are the new models which allow you to buy Boundary Zone tickets (and tickets from other locations). Anyhow after buying I went over to the main-line side of Victoria to see what was happening.

I designed to jump on a Bognor bound service formed of winners 377442 & 377452 for the short run to Clapham, where I noticed the rear end of the 450s on a Portsmouth Harbour service, the number rang a bell, so I legged it across platforms to get dud 450098 leading winner 450079 for the short run to Woking, down to 14 x 450s left to get, so any winner is good for me. Anyhow it gave me 15 minutes at Woking before the Exeter St Davies/Bristol Temple Meads service, so I made good use of the time and dashed outside the station towards McDonalds, which was busy, so I went to KFC and got some sort of burger in a box. Back to the station where I didn’t have long to wait for a trio of 159s to have its usual 5 minute dwell time, spotted another required 450 which was on the front of a Basingstoke/Alton stopper, so if I had missed that Portsmouth service at Clapham it wouldn’t have been so bad. Anyhow the trio was lead by 159022 (again), with 159005 & 159108 bringing up the rear for the just under 42 mile trip to Andover.

The rain had stopped and the sun had come out as the service arrived into Andover, typical. However I will need to return to Liverpool Street at some point to attack Bush Hill Park, Southbury & Broxbourne, anyhow they can wait for another day, with Hertford East being done in an evening peak.

A rather productive day there, fair games. Fingers crossed the service will be better next time you're over that side of things. Doing far better than me with 450s, but I'm hoping to start rectifying that on 3rd August.

Certainly you've done extremely well on c2c to get all those shacks done, not something a lot of us here can claim to have done! A clearout there is more than needed for me, but as always it's finding the time and there's more important stuff on the list of priorities!

30th May – A trip to South Yorkshire

A trip to South Yorkshire was on the cards for today, mainly to get the Supertram diversion in (covering the other side of the triangle which is normally a PSUL movement in the early hours, but due to the track replacement program meaning the trams are diverting that way to/from Meadowhall). When booking my advance tickets, I noticed a First Class advance was a couple quid more expensive than a standard class advance, so decided to treat myself.

The early morning service from Grateley towards Waterloo was in the hands of 159102 this morning, which I decided to take all the way to Waterloo (after noting down the 2x 450s from Southampton were dud when we overtook them), probably could have stayed around Clapham to see if anything popped up on the suburban side or the Windsor lines, but decided not to. After a visit to the Sainsburys Local outside the station to pick up some supplies (newspaper, breakfast) (and overhearing an older gentlemen moaning to the poor shop assistant that his copy of the Telegraph didn’t have all nine hundred and thirty six supplements in and demanding to be served by someone on a “proper” till). Anyhow deciding to make a change and give my Oyster card a quick spin.

I’ve worked out that splitting my journey at Basingstoke, and getting a London Terminals ticket, using my Oyster for the 2 Zone 1 journeys is slightly cheaper than a travel card, so it was to the Jubilee line this morning to take me to Baker Street before a short wait for a metropolitan line train took me to Kings Cross St Pancras, as I fancied a change from the usual Bakerloo/Victoria. To the EMT platforms at St Pancras, the First Class lounge is closed at weekends (how useless is that?) so it was a little fester sitting and waiting, watching passengers run like hell to board the Nottingham service, only to run pass an open door “as it was 1st class” for the doors to be closed on them. If time is tight, just jump on and walk through 1st class to standard class. At the time the only unit in the station was a required 222, so I was a bit happy, with another couple units arriving. The Sheffield service was announced to be departing from Platform 1, in the hands of dud 222021, previously had in December on a St Pancras to Luton run.

My assigned seat was complete and utter crap, backwards facing single airline seat, with a view of plastic, I soon ditched it and headed to the half & half coach, finding an available forward facing table seat with a window, just for the extra space to watch the world go by. First time in the 1st class area of a 222, and I’m impressed, nice leather seats, plus a free bottle of water & biscuits from the café (no wonder why weekend first is rather cheap to upgrade). I was on a fast to Leicester service, so finally clearing Bedford on a non-stop run, and just over 2 hours later the train arrived into Sheffield.

First step in Sheffield was to walk across to the tram platforms to await, money in hand to buy the travelmaster from the tram conductor. 5 or so minutes later winning tram 108 rolled in, and I took a seat, handing over my £7.60 [must have only recently gone up in price as the website says £7.50] to get a One Day Travelmaster Gold ticket which covers Trains/Trams & Buses within South Yorkshire, plus a couple in West Yorkshire. The curve was taken and away towards Meadowhall the tram sped, stopping by request at various stations along the route. I will have to spend a day in the future doing shack attacks along the Supertram network. Meadowhall was reached and I alighted, to pass over to the heavy rail side of the station. RTT was up and running to tell me movements, with my list of required units ready and waiting to double check.

Bit of a slow start, first 4 units spotted were duds (2x 158s, 1x 185 & 1x144), before winner 142051 rolled in on a Lincoln bound service (I think), so I jumped on board for the short 3 mile 30 chain leap back to Sheffield. RTT time again to locate movements in the station, knowing I couldn’t catch anything heading south (bar the Hope Line stopper to Dore with a 40-odd minute wait, unless I researched buses), so my attention was mainly spent in the 2 bays. I didn’t have to wait long before winner 142042 rolled in from Lincoln heading towards Adwick, so it was scored on a Meadowhall leap. Next up was a delayed winner 142023 terminating at Sheffield, with FTX’s 185137 taking me back to Meadowhall.

Another short wait before 158872 rolled in to take me back to Sheffield with 142028 bouncing me back towards Meadowhall. My first new 144 was scored in the shape of 144003 back to Sheffield, passing the remains of Brightside & Attercliffe Road stations. Bit of a dash from the bays to platform 1 where 144011 was waiting to depart, but got held up by a late running (dud) TPX. Back to Meadowhall and back into Sheffield on 142092, with a short wait before 144017 took me back to Meadowhall (again). Another couple dud units later before 144010 arrived to take me back to Sheffield with 158908 back out to Meadowhall.

Deciding for a change of scene, I headed back to Sheffield on my first dud Northern unit of the day with 158907 (previously had on a Meadowhall – Barnsley run in January) before crossing over to jump on dud 220022 for the short run to Doncaster to see which Northern 32X units were floating about on the Doncaster/Leeds services. 321903 was hiding in plain sight in the sidings, which was annoying as that is my final 321/9 to get. Dud 321901 was one of the units on the diagram which I took to South Elmsall, and had an idea, if the other unit on the diagram was dud I would have a nice walk over to Moorthorpe.

The walk wasn’t required as winner 322485 arrived to take me back to Doncaster, where I just missed a dodgy connection on a Lincoln service, so had 30 minutes to kill before dud 142051 rolled up to take me to another new shack in the shape of Mexborough. Quite a nice station building, but I bet the member of staff in the ticket office gets bored. Winner 144008 rolled in to take me backwards to Conisbrough. Another nice little station, unstaffed and next to a busy sounding road, anyhow I had a few minutes wait before the next Sheffield bound service, formed of dud 142042 (for the 2nd time of the day), taking me to Swinton (South Yorkshire).

After looking around, via an oversized bridge from the island platform, I headed back to the station to await dud 142053 to take me back to Meadowhall, where a quick transfer saw me onto winner 158787 back to Sheffield. Quick hop towards the next departure saw me on winner 142095 for another Meadowhall hop, noting the number of the 144 on a Huddersfield service as being required and being the next service I could catch from Meadowhall, so crossing over to the Barnsley platforms, and waited before 144015 rolled in. The Huddersfield services don’t wait for long at Sheffield; quick play with RTT saw a connection could be made at Wombwell, so another station ticked off the list.

Dud 144017 took me back to Meadowhall, where I had a semi-required service following from Leeds (as it would be the last one which connected up with a XC to take me to Doncaster in time to catch my booked service home), and it was winner 158861 for the short run into Sheffield, and for the final time of the day I transferred to P1 to await the XC service towards Newcastle from Reading. My luck changed as it was required 220026, which is always a bonus as one less 220 left to try and locate.

To Doncaster, where I had 15 or so minutes to wait before my first Hull Trains service of the year, deciding to make a change from the usual East Coast service and going via 180. All 4 units from Hull Trains were duds, but I was happy it was 180110, last spotted in my log as heading from Stevenage to St Pancras via a triple reversal. Nice peaceful ride down the East Coast main-line, free wifi is always a bonus, and arrival was a couple minutes early at around 21:10.

With an hour to play with before the 22:20 departure meant I could take it easy, so I went down to the underground and caught a Victoria line service to Oxford Circus and straight onto a Bakerloo service to Charing Cross. Exiting the underground and to the main-line platforms to score 465241 & 465015 on a quick hop to Waterloo East.

RTT was in action as I walked to Waterloo main, to see if anything required was floating around which I could catch, a couple Portsmouth services were duds, but there was an required 450/5 on an Alton run. 450547 took me to Woking, where I was pondering on route to ditch it at Surbiton, jump on a Woking stopper to Walton on Thames to connect with the Basingstoke stopper, which would have given a 2 minute connection at Woking. I decided not to go for that option and remained on board, changing to duds 444023/444029 on a short run to Basingstoke, just to get out of Woking. 159014 took me home from Basingstoke, arrival was on time, and I was lucky I took the car in the morning as it was throwing it down with rain.

Another excellent read, you must have got really bored of the Meadowhall to Sheffield line!

Certainly you've cleared a lot of your Northern requirements there, and I share your pain with 321903 as I need that one too, also my last of the 3 321/9s to get. I got 322485 the following day, and 158787 was off to Carlisle the following evening after you got it. I wanted to get it in myself as it is one of just 6 158s with Northern I need now, but a winner 155 was more important to me at the time!

Great read! Sheffield to Meadowhall leaps would be a lot easier is I didn't have to avoid the 142/3/4s like the plague!

Ah yep. Forgotten Northern only had 142s and 144s. They are still hard to avoid when doing Meadowhall leaps, the same way I think the 142/3s will be on Cardiff Central-Queen Street leaps.

Pacers would be hard to avoid on the valley lines, you might be standing at Central for a good while before a 150/153 rolls in

Darn. I was hoping that half of the turns would be a 15x and the other half a 14x. Hopefully there will be lots of 150s about when I head to CDF on the 12th of June. I am looking forward to getting quite a few units and of course looking forward to the WAG set from Cardiff to Wrexham with a bunch of other forum members in 1st class!

Indeed, sometimes you'll get several 150s before a couple of Pacers, sometimes the other way around. Either way you'll not have to wait long for a 150 or 153!

When are you coming down this way fishquinn?

Good news about the 150s then! How often do you get a 153 with a 150 or even on its own on the valleys?

I will be in CDF for June 12th. On the Northbound WAG with a few other forum members in 1st class in the evening.

Yesterday there was at least 1 153+150 combo on the ebbw vale service, also at least 1 single 153 on city line (coryton to radyr) - i was only at CDF for approx 20 mins waiting to go to west wales

Regarding the Cardiff Valleys, they are seen on Coryton to Radyrs having booked work, and the Cardiff Bay. They are restricted for clearance north of Radyr and have only been on the Rhymney line on an isolated occasion. There are daily 150+153 and 158+153 combos on the Ebbw Vale route.

Occasionally one might seen (usually as a pair) on the Maesteg route.

Thanks! I will probably not do any of the Ebbw Vale services but the others will come in handy to know.

Some good write-ups there, nicely annotated with pictures too.

As a pure station visitor, and not a unit 'basher', the idea of multiple Sheffield-Meadowhall runs really wouldn't appeal, as I would want to maximise my stations - but I totally understand everyone has their own motivation, and that's what keeps it all an interesting and fairly unique hobby, so well done for ticking off your trains!

I change between doing station visits and unit searching, quite often on the same trip (i.e. have a couple hours doing unit searching between two stations before going off to do some shack attacks)

See I'm rather different, I go for required stations much more than just shuttling up and down all day these days. Obviously going back and forth over well-trodden territory still features sometimes too, as you can't always avoid it plus it brings back memories of such trips.

6th June – The Don & Went Railtour – A day spent mainly going backwards

I was booked on Pathfinder’s Don & Went railtour around some freight lines in Yorkshire, and I was pondering when booking at how to connect up with it as it departed from Bristol. Deciding not to go for an early morning long drive to Bristol I looked for connections to connect with the tour at Birmingham or Burton On Trent, and thankfullly I could connect with the first XC of the day from Basingstoke to New Street (giving a tight 2 minute connection) or extend for the same price of an advance ticket to Burton, to give me a bit of safety. Coming back the connection with the last Basingstoke bound XC was a bit tight (10 minutes to orginal timetable, and knowing how railtours can often fall behind time, decided not to risk that and go for the final EMT service from Derby to St Pancras.

Anyways, the day began bright and early, alarm set for 4:30, and I was out on the open road for a quick drive along the “highway to the sun”, or A303 as its otherwise known (and yes the westbound carriageway had plenty of caravans/campers heading to the deepest darkness south west. Thankfully the evening engineering works on the slip road I normally use had been complete, some nice new tarmac, anyway Basingstoke car-park was reached (and noticing that there are some ‘premium’ bays which are the same price at weekends nearer to the station) I was onto the platform 15 or so minutes before the “red” train as another passenger shouted (“does the red train depart from that platform?” would arrive.

At 05:39 (yes a XC service which arrived into Basingstoke early!), dud 220028 [last had last month heading to Newcastle from Durham] was on duty, taking my reserved table seat heading forward on departure, I sat back and relaxed to read the newspaper, 15 minutes at Reading to do the reversal and it was off to New Street, arriving pretty much on time. The tour train was in the platform, but I decided to give it a miss (as it was routed to head out towards Walsall and onto the Sutton Park line) to see what voyager would be on the Glasgow bound service. The tour train was delayed departing for a good 10 minutes, but that didn’t bother me as dud 221121 (last had last November on a Guildford diversion between Southampton & Reading) rolled in. Alighting at Burton On Trent, where I had 45-odd minutes to wait, so I decided to head out of the station, turning left in search of anything.

Finding pretty much sod-all, apart from closed up shops I headed back to join a busy station, to await the delayed tour train, being led by dud 66177 (last had it on an UK Railtour to Buxton in March where it broke down after reaching Buxton), and finding my seat, which was a window seat (finally) but was heading backwards on departure, which didn’t bother me. Departure from Burton, and bearing right onto the first of my new track of the day, the freight only line towards Trent South, the Castle Donnington line, passing the Marks & Spencer distribution centre with the unused rail connection. Onto the Midland Main Line where the train headed left into Toton Depot, passing many stored 60s, before pausing when dud 60079 was attached to the rear (had it in January on the Shropshire Union railtour), and the train continued onto the Erewash Valley line northbound, passing Alfreton and pausing for the final pick-up at Chesterfield, making use of P3 on the slow tracks.

Departure was on time and soon sped up (as fast as a 66 with 11 carriages and a 60 on the back can speed up) and away from the main-line onto the former North Midland railway route from Tapton Junction, passing Barrow Hill and coming off the route at Beighton Junction towards the Sheffield/Lincoln line, just before Woodhouse, contining towards Sheffield and carrying on over the Midland Main Line onto the former Woodhead line, passing the site of Sheffield Victoria and onwards towards the NR limit at the Stocksbridge Steel Works. A classic ‘branch’ line with trees brushing the side of the train (from what it sounded like I thing someone down the carriage managed to lose a camera as a branch took it from the open window).

Reversing so the 60 was in charge (and with me heading forward), back towards Sheffield, passing Hillsborough football ground and taking a curve at Woodburn Junction onto the track spotted running alongside the supertram route towards Meadowhall. Taking a right into the Tinsley Yard carrying on passed the new stone terminal buildings, where the track layout has been changed. Reversing again so the 66 was back in charge and out towards taking the other side of the curve to join the line again at Tinsley South Junction (which annoyingly leaves the bit between Broughton Lane Junction & Tinsley South uncovered, but I believe XC’s 1746 Southampton Central – York weekday service makes use of the line as a PSUL movement, so it is doable). Onto the Rotherham Central ‘loop’, passing the station to rejoin the main line towards Swinton, for a short while before diving off again for some more red track action, using the line bypassing Swinton (plus a goods loop) towards Mexborough, and onward towards Doncaster, via another goods line and the goods lines before arrival into Doncaster.

After a quick visit to grab some lunch, I decided to pass the time to see which Northern 32X units were about on the Leeds-Doncaster, 322483 wouldn’t be around as that was sitting on the siding next to Doncaster station (where 321901 was last week). 321903 was one of the units on the service, so I gave that a miss to which probable 142 would be on the service to Adwick ‘International’. Would it be required? Nope, 142021 rolled in for the near 4 mile trip to Adwick, where I had a 10 minute wait before the electric service would roll in, had odds of 1/3 being required (8 units in total, 2 of which it wouldn’t be [903 or 483], with 2 required [901 & 481], and the odds were against me as it was dud 322484. Ah well, at least a return ticket to Adwick from Doncaster is only £1.30, so not a lot wasted. Back in Doncaster and one last look around before heading back to the station for a couple photos and back onto the tour train.

Heading north and taking the Askern line from Shaftholme Junction towards Knottingley, before taking the east facing curve onto the Dearne Valley Line, before bearing right into the Ferrybridge Wagon Works. Not going that far, before another reversal back onto the Dearne Valley Line, this time taking the west curve back onto the Pontrefract line, passing Monkhill & Tanshelf, with the small stations along the route, before pausing and heading around a curve to avoid Westfield Kirkgate to head towards Normanton.

Brief wait for a service 158 before going ‘wrong line’ and onto the Wakefield Europort rails, carrying on all the way to the buffer stop (which pleased some BLS members), final reversal and the trip back onto the regular line, passing Normanton, taking the curve at Turners Lane to Calder Bridge Junction, and onto the ECML Leeds spur, taking in a couple more goods loops on route towards Swinton, and coming off the main-line near the site of a former Rotherham station at Masborough Junction back onto the North Midland railway metals, back south (via another goods loop, I’m more of a Baker coverage person so the goods loops don’t bother me), and joining the outward trip at Beighton Junction, and towards Chesterfield, where the 60 was detached. Running down the MML and with a right time arrival into Derby (19:43), where I departed from the train, and headed out of the station.

Derby railway station is quite far from the city centre, I made it a 10 minute walk before reaching any shops. Eventually found a Tesco Metro, and purchased a sandwich and headed back towards the station, which was quite scary as Derby city centre felt like yobbo central, wouldn’t like to be around after dark. Anyways, back at the station and where it was fully gated at 19:45, everything was wide open at 20:30 (apart from the gates on the underground, I had no ticket check on the way home, nor had to put it into any NR barriers). Sitting down on a bench to await the arrival of the 21:00 service towards Leicester, where I had a seat to Loughborough, just keeping an eye out with reading my latest book, passing the time until winner 222006 rolled in (finally a winner!) taking me to new shack Loughborough.

20 minutes at Loughborough was enough for me, before dud 222012 rolled in to take me back to St Pancras, nice backwards facing table seat, settling down to relax, as the run after Luton was at a crawl, the MML down to 2-tracks it felt as the 222 must have been behind a stopper. Eventually we reached St Pancras, stuck behind another 5 car 222, so it was a long walk, made longer by the person sitting next to me waiting until it felt like everybody else had gotten off the train before he stood up. I had an unofficial 23 minute connection to the 00:05 service towards Bournemouth (must be one of the longest services to depart a London terminal after midnight), or else have an hour fester until the 01:00 service towards Basingstoke. Down to the Victoria line with a couple minute wait before a Victoria line service to Oxford Circus, across to the Bakerloo platforms, and happy days next Bakerloo was in a minute, heading and terminating at Waterloo. The time was now 23:57 so I took it easy walking up to the main-line platform, finding platform 9 and boarding duds 444011/444030. Running in the slow tracks, picking up passengers at Clapham Junction & Wimbledon before running to Woking, transferring to the fasts to give an easier connection to those passengers heading down on the Alton line, and back into the slows towards Basingstoke.

A short walk to the car-park, and a nice B-road drive home (Going back via the A303 would be too boring), arrival around 01:50, the end of a long day with some new track covered, anyhow some pictures:

As always an excellent read, and crikey that really was a long day! Very unusual for you to come away with just one winner from a trip

I believe The Yorkshire Byways UKR tour is doing the line avoiding Tinsley depot, so we'll both be scoring that track at the end of August, all being well of course!

Nice easy day around London soon I suspect ;)

Indeed the Yorkshire Byways tour does cover that part of the line, plus many more lines (going by the routing on the UKR website)

Next London trip probably won't be until the 26th June when I'm staying overnight for a trip to Scotland on the Saturday morning. Might try for the LOROL 317s in the evening peak

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
I cannot remember if I've already mentioned this or not, you seem to be doing several railtours at the moment.

It appeared to be a good one in Yorkshire. It is my intention to cover the PSUL bits of track in August when I will be doing the Freedom of the NE Rover.

On a side note, I'm kind of toying with the idea of doing the "Ticket to Ryde" in September (URL http://www.ukrailtours.com/product/a-ticket-to-ryde-2/). Is it worthwhile me parting with £50 for this tour?

In peace

Sounds like it was a good day apart from the tour locos not being winners.

What is the chance of getting double FGW 150s on the trains out of Cardiff or is it mainly single 150/158?

Cheers!

Usually single 150s (/1 and /2 varieties) but 14 07 Taunton to Cardiff and 17 00 return is a double. There are instances of 150+153 combos. 158s on Portsmouths are 3 Car 158s (Singly). They only have 2x2 Car 158s and these could be seen working similarly to the 150s.
