One amusing line from the above article ,asking passengers what they thought of the loco hauled services ...

"One said: “it’s like the Orient Express”, while another asked “is this a steam train or electric?" ....

Can one get off at Carlisle on the 21.15 Euston Highland sleeper to make the 05.15 Calisler-Preston via cumbrian coast? is Carlisle station open all night?

It appears that late starts then missing paths on the single line sections are the main problems for losing most of the time.

A passenger was taken ill aboard a Carlisle-BIF-Preston dmu yesterday. The service was delayed then cancelled and a replacement ran from BIF. It could be that this caused some of the problems.

On a train...somewhere!
2C41 showing delayed ex-sidings due to a fault on the set.
2C42 late start in r/a to same. Added delay as a result of a trespass incident (Wigton to Workington) and LC failure (Sellafield to Millom).

So I can get back to Carlisle ?

Yes, it's the same set.

On a different note, I presume that there is no requirement, or inclination, for the 10:04 Preston to Barrow in Furness to connect with the 11:38 Barrow to Carlisle, and the latter can happily go on its' way on time even if the former is running late? Just that there's a strong possibility that I'll be taking a trip on these trains later in the summer, and the likelihood of making the six minute connection at Barrow has a direct effect on which Wetherspoons, in which town, I'll be hitting for breakfast...

I too would like to know the answer to this as I might head that way tomorrow. Northern's timetable actually lists this as a connecting service, but is it actually guaranteed to wait a few minutes should the service from Preston be (inevitably) running a few minutes late?

I've got a Northern day ranger today, and had planned to do that journey this morning. When I got to Preston I decided not to risk missing the connection and being stuck in Barrow for ages. So I'll be getting the 17:31 from Barrow instead. It looks like the Preston to Barrow train arrived on time though, so the connection would have been no problem.

Well yesterday looks as though it may have been held, whether by luck or management I don't know the Preston was 9 min's late into Barrow and the Carlisle departed 9 min's late 5 min's after the Preston arrival. The Carlisle was only a couple of min's late on the inbound working suggesting it could have departed earlier. Today the Preston was on time.

Looking at RTT the day before it looks like it was held by a couple of minutes then too. I think I might risk it. To be honest I'm more interested by the coastal ride, so a loco hauled set would be a nice bonus but isn't essential for a good day out :)

Was the passenger ok in the end?

It would appear the 10:04 Preston-Barrow is going to continue through Barrow and up the coast to Carlisle, no idea why!

Interesting, if this has happened. Perhaps a fault on a coach on set 2 that requires it to be cut out or repaired in Barrow sidings? It’d have three hours before it had to go anywhere else at 14:37

Was on the 10:04 from Preston today (or rather the 10:25 from Carnforth), which then became the 11:38 BIF-CAR. The guard informed me before we arrived into Barrow there was a fault with one of the locomotives so the decision had been made just to continue running our train forward to Carlisle. Given how tight the connection, the fact the service from Preston was running about 10 minutes late and the fact most people on board would have been connecting to the Carlisle service anyway this seemed like a sensible thing to do. As we arrived into Barrow the set was sat in the platform opposite.

Anyway, a few observations from today's journey, if I may:

1. After we left Barrow we ran on time (give or take a couple of minutes) the whole journey - in fact I believe we arrived into Carlisle early!

2. I noticed no discernible difference in station dwell times compared to multiple units whatsoever. The fact we ran on time I guess is testament to that.

3. From what I observed, the fears many people have on here about the locals being unable to work the low-tech doors seemed unfounded. The only issue was passengers not closing the doors behind them. All it would have taken was a little notice over the PA to say "please close the doors behind you" in addition to the never ending announcements about minding the step onto the platform. That said this didn't seem to hinder our progress at all.

4. The Northern guard and on board DRS staff were working very hard indeed and were going stirling work running up and down the train dealing with doors and dispatch duties. However...

5. Because the guard was working so hard with this a ticket check was only carried out once from Barrow. This concerns me because the medium- to long-term viability for the extra capacity will be assessed based on the revenue and passenger numbers it carries (along with the other factors), and this in turn will be based on ticket sales. Many passengers boarded at unstaffed stations with no ticket issuing facilities, so many got a free ride (unless they already had a ticket) and consequently won't be counted for statistical purposes. With the set up the way it currently is the guard is too busy managing the actual train so there may be a case for another member of staff to work the train in a revenue capacity.

6. As others have stated the train was too long for many of the stations. However there was a rather inconsistent approach to which carriages passengers should disembark from at which stations. Sometimes it was A and B, sometime C and D (I should add the announcements were crystal clear). Perhaps it's to do with the location of signals or something, but if it were possible to just always use the front two or rear two carriages this would make things easier for the on board staff who were frantically pacing the train before each station, and also for the passengers who, despite the excellent announcements over the PA, would have a clearer idea about where they needed to get on or off. Either way - a lot of the 'short' platforms were actually long enough, but just had sections which were out of use. So if this arrangement is to continue in the medium- to long-term it might save a lot of door hassle to just bring these parts of the platforms back to into use - I guess that will depend on how much it costs!

7. The DRS carriages were very well turned out indeed: neat, clean and comfortable. I overheard the passenger opposite me on the phone stating "It's a really old train, but it's much nicer and in better nick than the usual rubbish we get."

I did the same trains as you today and did my own survey asking people what they thought, only spoke to 6 but every one said they were better than usual. The 14:35 Carlisle-Barrow, even if you took the cranks out of it would've been packed on a unit. I too agree with the consistancy of which coaches, some folk wanted their pushbikes out of the van but it wasn't one of the coaches they were told to use. Not a big problem because as far as I could see the staff were brilliant and helpfull. Despite anouncements I did have to help a (young) lad with a door. I feel sure it can be made to work, less staff, consistancy etc etc. I had a top day out for £12.50.

The overall experience for average punters has got to be better than a unit. Maybe the DBSOs will help with platforming.

Northern are currently in the process of recruiting a team of assistant fare collectors to work on the Cumbrian Coast. Eventually, each loco hauled set will be manned by a Guard and an AFC.

The platforms at Parton, Maryport and Silverdale have already been extended to 100M length and most others will follow during the course of the year.
