Speaking of Turbostars for a moment - Do we know when the next round of 'Northern' Turbostars are coming down to the South - The TPE to Chiltern 170s?

Initially to be four 170/3s transferred for the May 2015 timetable change, the plan thereafter is detailed here with mention of the arrangement for six additional Class 319s.

Don't know why the link isn't working when I posted it, but I can confirm that what is showing now is what I posted last night; 19.37 off Craigentinny tonight, 03.00 at Stewart's Lane tomorrow morning.

Edited to add:

They're on the way...

Oh I knew that, I was just wondering whether it was April or May when the 4 170/3s will be leaving TPE for Chiltern and if we knew anymore of when they were leaving -I.E for refurbishment straight away or into service with Chiltern first.

I'm surprised that hasn't been announced yet, even if only by Chiltern boasting about how they'll Chiltern-ise them before they enter service. I'd imagine a full refurbishment would take a good while, but a simple refresh should see them out in no time.

Of course I don't have details as to how much work they'll need to do to turn them into 168/3s (or whatever they choose), but if I was to guess I'd say we'll see 168/3s in service around September.

1E10 4 vice 8 today due to stock shortage. Need those units quickly!

Luckily it's Friday and there are significantly less passengers on a Friday, however I still caught the 7.13 down to Uckfield to come back rather than take the short formed train.

Not sure why it was short, someone tweeted last night that someone had thrown up inside the Uckfield train they were on, so pondered if that was the reason!

Certainly agree that the new units are needed though, and really dont understand why Southern are so secretive about them. Guess in part its because they are damned if they do and damned if they dont.

171802 was sitting in selhurst fuel point during the morning rush. Must have had a fault.

Meanwhile for the 4th time this week 2 peak time Edinburgh - Glasgow services are running 3v6. Now where did the other units go...............

ScotRail have had 6 156/158s freed up by electrification over the last 12-18 months, they have the second Fife hauled service running (replacing 2x 158s). Its not as if we've not received any benefit... Peak time short forming has existed as long as I can remember and will probably become a bit more common once the Borders is up and running, using the 'slack' that exists (or not!) just now.

Are the 158s allocated to borders going to get a tidy-up (particularly the horrid seats and toilets) pre-borders? If so this could be causing issues with unit shortages? Or am I waffling? Are there still DMUs running to Northberwick, dunbar an via Carstairs? If so lets fix this as it makes no sense.

The 15 Haymarket sets (726-736/738-741) which weren't refurbished a few years ago are due for some work, presumably the promised 'scenic trains', but nothing started as yet. The other 8 ex-Wessex & SWT units are due off lease, so doubt they will have anything (much) done on them.

There is virtually nothing booked fully 'under the wires', perhaps just the last Carstairs which is a positioning move and substitution DMU vs EMU seems very rare these days.

Well if you lot don't want the ex-Wessex Trains 158s we'll gladly have them back! I wasn't aware they were going off-lease either.

Surprisingly quiet on what's happening with the 170s that have gone south, I'd have expected to hear something by now. Seems weird that Southern haven't made it big news they've got more trains and preparing them for service.

I think if thez did they'd be running a PR Bloodbath for themselves, given just how much bad press they get over there DMU Worked routes anyway, this would be particularly relivant if the sets have any major issues when they enter traffic

Southern arent very good at communicating things like this.. even internally.

We know that they are going to be refurbished to southern spec, they are going to be split into 2 and 4 car units, we know the work will probably be done at selhurst and we know it will take a few months. ALso some rewiring needs to be done if the electrical systems are gonna be the same as the 171s. ANd we know that they will get new dellner couplers. Unsure about the livery and unsure whether they will be painted in southern colours or just vinyled.

Fair points, and their Twitter team aren't exactly brilliant anyway. They could do with taking a leaf out of Virgin and LM's books on how to communicate with their passengers via Twitter.

Fair games, I must have missed the bit about doing the work at Selhurst

Safe to scratch them out of my book as 170s I should imagine at least? Will add them in as 171s when confirmed numbers are available, and of course I'll be updating my requirements lists on my phone too.

Bring on the opportunity to get them all in on a DaySave later this year!

Coming past Selhurst this morning there appeared to be a number of diesel units in the shed. At least one was too long and was poking I got out the Victoria line end of the short bays on the shed. They were in Southern colours.

As Southern appear to be operating a full service on the Uckfield line this morning and don't have enough spares for so many to be in the shed, are these the ascot rail units being converted?

It did seem that there were no short formations today so they must just be spare.

The 4 scotrail units havent been painted/vinyled yet. 170422 is in one of the other shed roads at selhurst, minus its coupler, so work on that has started.

The other 3 units 423, 424 and 425 are still st Stewarts Lane.

In related news, i believe the uckfield line platform extensions have been delayed due to planning permission issues. Summer 2016 timetable change seems now to be the target for this now.
