Very nicely done, good to know Hawarden Bridge is quite easy to do by foot. Jealous of 507023 as I need it and 2 other 507s.

I really need to return to the Carnforth to Hellifield line, it has been way too long since I did 50031 and 50049 over that with The Airean Raider! Was certainly a good way to celebrate my birthday!

Not that I have any idea when I'll be up that way next for any shack attacking, but it is still on the cards. Indeed, I believe at least part of the line is valid on the Lancashire Day Ranger, which is on the cards for 2015!

7 May 2015: Northern Day ranger No. 1

Thanks to Northern's newspaper offer I now have the opportunity to fill in some much need Northern coverage. I have enough tokens for six outings and today was the first. The plan today was to fill in some of the gaps between Manchester and Liverpool.

I arrived at Crewe and purchased the rover. The plan was to catch the 08:50 towards Manchester but already things were going wrong as the dreaded words "CANCELLED" plastered free platform displays. I had to quickly weigh up my options. There was a train at 08:31, but I couldn't use my rover until 08:45, so I made a dash to the ticket machines and shelled out the extra for a single to Goostrey (by which point I'd be able to use the rover). I stepped on 323228 and entered into the unknown!

On the train I did a bit of emergency planning and came up with a strategy. I alighted at Gatley (an unexpected shack scratch) and crossed over (or rather under) to the other platform where 323224 showed up to take nee back to Manchester Airport. Here I picked up 156487 and stayed on as far as Manchester Oxford Road. The next train to arrive was 150139 and 150145 which I took to Salford Crescent.

My arrival here meant I would be be able to revert to the original plan. 150132 arrived to take me to Swinton. There was a bit of a wait here and a caffeine fix was required so I had a hunt around the local area, but to no avail. Back at the station I caught dud 156440 to Manchester Victoria. I haven't been here for ages and there's building work going on. I have to say the new canopy over the metrolink lines is looking pretty swish!

I finally get my caffeine fix here while waiting for my next train, 142023 as far as Wavertree Technology Park. A short wait here and then it's 150116 one stop down the line to Edge Hill. Almost an hour on a pacer had taken it's toll and I need to stretch my legs so take the decision to walk from here to Liverpool Lime Street.

Lunch comprising off an orange juice, a cheese and pickle sandwich and a doughnut is sourced from a local Sainsburys. It's then 150111 back to Edge Hill, followed by 150142 to Warrington Central (passing a sizeable fleet of newly painted 319s at the depot near Liverpool South Parkway). At Warrington the usual walk to Bank Quay takes place, where I find my next train, 150111, waiting for me. By the way, I'm guessing the big factory here makes washing detergent? The whole place smells of the stuff I wash my clothes with!

I get off at Roby and witness some of Northern's 'new' 319 fleet wizz by. It's then 156421 for the short hop to Huyton (could've walked it to be fair), followed by 150220 to St Helens Central, and then 150116 to Wigan North Western.

After the short walk to Wallgate a cheeky shack attack opportunity presents itself, so it's 142063 to nearby Ince, followed by a brisk walk back to Wallgate, where the ticket inspector is quite confused by the fact I've entered the station twice without coming out!

I now take 142047 to Meols Cop. I alighted here so I could achieve this new station but it meant a very brisk walk to Southport. I make it in time so reward myself with a can of pop from the shop in the station which doubles up as a ticket office. It's then 142047 again for the long journey to Salford Central.

Again, another long pacer journey necessitates a walk, so I make my way through Manchester city centre to Piccadilly station. Here I catch 323233 to Levenshulme, followed by 150139 and 150145 to Heaton Chapel. This last shack was originally planned for this morning, so I'm glad I got it in! The final train of the day is the first one I started with, 323228, which takes me back to Crewe.

Overall a good day and I've made sine good progress with the coverage map. I have another Northern rover planned for next Friday, which I'm currently planning to use to get some of the West Yorkshire lines covered.

A very busy day there indeed, although I'd have just asked the guard if they'd take me on the 0831 off Crewe, due to the cancellation. If not I'd have asked them if they'd issue me a ticket off their machine, instead of running upstairs!

Jealous of course, but that's nothing new

I thought about doing this but there were a large number of florescent clad Northern staff on the train, so went for the safe option!

I'm sure if you'd explained and asked they'd have been happy to assist, especially if they work on commision! As the saying goes, if you don't ask you don't get!

Obviously if you'd boarded without asking first with the ranger it would have been totally different!

Just got through the last of your trip reports crehid, a very good read too. You've certainly been busy and with more Northern Rovers to boot, looks like the red pens gonna be doing a fair bit overtime.
I'm hoping our local paper continues with the voucher scheme they do once a year, for cheap travel on the ECML between Edinburgh and London, like they did during the GNER & East Coast days, remains to be seen if Virgin EC will do such.

Glad you enjoyed it :) The red pens are in overdrive at the moment because I've just started, although my priority at the moment is achieving route coverage, so I'm not going out of my way to chase down trains (yet). The Northern Rovers are great and it's the first time the Stoke Sentinal (my local rag) has had the vouchers so I intend to make the most of it!

Well I've had a run in with the Northern florescent army before (when travelling with a valid anytime ticket!) and from experience it doesn't matter what the guard has told you in their eyes! So I always go for the safe option if I can! I might ask if it happens again though!

Fair enough, I don't blame you for not trusting them in that case!

You haven't been a basher for long have you? I honestly have lost track of who started when!

Nah, not long at all. Started working on route coverage since January 2014, and only started noting down my haulages this year. Don't worry I'm catching up ;) Travelled lots by train for many years before of course!

How on the earth did you have problems with an anytime ticket!>?

Anyhow, good read and plenty of ideas there for future trips. Looking forward to your Northern Day 2

Cracking day out by the sounds of it, you didn't fancy any of the 319s then?

I was going for route coverage this time... although I am a little disappointed to have missed out. I saw 2 319s speed by while waiting at Roby, but the rest seemed to be in the depot we passed near Liverpool South Parkway.

How on the earth did you have problems with an anytime ticket!>?

Break of journey on the return portion of an anytime return. They took exception to the fact that A: I was breaking the journey which they felt wasn't permitted, and B: I was travelling on a different day from the start date, despite it clearly showing it was valid for a month!

What chance do the general public have if the so called experts seem to have no idea.

We only know because we are all geeks......which I am proud to be ;)

I hope you were able to find someone to back you up and that you got an apology.

It's going to be great. Of course it being a Friday there's a certain Stockport to Stalybridge train to be had :)
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
15 May 2015: Northern Day Ranger No. 2

Upon arrival at Crewe the day ranger is purchased. The plan for today was route coverage in West Yorkshire, but also to head up to Stockport and board the once-a-week service to Stalybridge. This meant having to leave Crewe before the validity of my ranger kicked in, so a single to Wilmslow was also purchased.

While waiting for the first train of the day at Crewe I was treated to the sight of two class 20s passing through, pulling what looked like a nuclear flask train. Eventually winner 390047 appeared to take me up to Wilmslow. Now it was passed 08:45 I was able to switch to 323236 to take me up to Stockport.

There was a little bit of a wait here until the famous Stockport to Stalybridge train turned up. This was formed of 142045 coupled to dud 150145. For comfort I made my way to the 150, but this was locked out so had to settle for the limited leg room and hard seats of the 142 instead. I counted five people (including myself) board this service. As we set off, two more people boarded at Reddish South and another three at Denton. I've seen trains with a much more frequent service receive less patronage than this!

We pulled into Stalybridge, where it was a simple cross platform transfer to pick up 150112 to Ashton-under-Lyne. Again a short wait was had. I eventually picked up 142044 to Huddersfield. The sun starts to come out now and I am rewarded with excellent Pennine scenery. At Huddersfield I boarded 142064 which was ready and waiting (did this unit used to belong to FGW? It seemed to have their upholstery over the seats). This was taken one stop to Brighouse, and after a short wait it was 158758 to Mirfield.

At Mirfield I had a tight 2 minute connection. Having read andyb2706's trip reports and his experience of tight interchanges I was rather worried about this! Fortunately things were running to time and the connection was made without hassle (thanks also to the fact there was no need to switch platforms). I boarded 142021 to Wakefield Westgate (which inlcuded a reversal at Kirkgate). Westgate station (or at least the ticket hall and concourse) has recently been rebuilt and looks fantastic. I make use of the Greggs here and purchased lunch.

I now have to walk to Kirkgate station. This is an easy walk, facilitated by very clear signage throughout (not like Warrington!!) and sunny weather. As I approach Kirkgate station, however, I have a run in with a cyclist who comes round the corner on the pavement too fast and crashes into me! I am winded by the experience but the cyclist appears to have come off worse, falling off their bike. Nevertheless, they are quickly back up on their feet and after a half-hearted apology they've sped off again.

Still winded and slightly shocked by the literal run-in with the cyclist, I arrive at Wakefield Kirkgate. The station here is undergoing a facelift - it's far from complete, but it's looking really good (mind you, you wouldn't have to have done much to improve it). 150143 is waiting on the platform. I board and, as we set off, tuck into my sandwich and gingerbread man. I alight at Pontefract Monkhill. I cross over the platform in time to witness a Grand Central 180 pulling in. My Northern only ticket means I can't board, so it's a five minute wait for 144016 back to Wakefield Kirkgate.

It's a short wait until dud 158905 arrives for the fast service (i.e. not via Castleford) to Leeds.

The plan now is to head to Bradford to obtain Forster Square station (which avoid readers will remember was neglected from the Airedale and Wharfedale bash. It's dud 333002 to Shipley, where I pick up dud 322483 towards Bradford. I have five 333s outstanding and there's another train a few minutes behind us so I decide to try my luck by bailing at Frizinghall. This doesn't go to plan as dud 333012 turn up. Nevertheless I have now arrived into Bradford Forster Square, thus completing all of the Airedale and Wharefale shacks and track. At Forster Square I go to the ticket office and pick up one full West Yorkshire timetables, which comes into effect next week (it's compact and very useful to have).

I treat myself in Bradford to a short coffee break, before making my way to Bradford Interchange. Here the plan is to 'station hop' to Leeds, so it's 158816 to New Pudsey, followed by 155346 (my first 155) to Bramley, and then 158755 to Leeds.

The plan here is to head towards Manchester via the Calder Valley, which will be new track for me. I alight the train to find the platform displays telling me the train I've just stepped off is the next train I want. So it's back on 158755 the journey to Manchester Victoria. The views are great and a decision is made to combine some shack scratching with walking in this area in the not-to-distant future.

At Manchester it's a walking transfer to Piccadilly. Here I pick up 323223 to Handforth. I have a 30 minute wait here so have some time to inspect the several Handforth railway station signs which are in the styles of railway companies in other countries (hard to explain - I should have taken a picture... or better yet go and visit yourself!!). I also head to a nearby Tescos for a chocolate bar to sustain me until I get home. The last train of the day is 323232 which gets me back to Crewe in good time before the bus that I reward myself after a good day out with a pint.

Some stats for you (sorry, I've forgotten to do these recently):
Total mileage: 209m27ch
Total winners for haulage: 15
Total new shacks: 14
Total cost: £19.50

I need to get back to doing stats myself, I used to do it all the time.

A very productive time indeed had there, you sure had a better Friday than I did, but then I was grafting

I can't wait to get up that way myself in 2 weeks time, it's about time I made a proper return to West Yorkshire! I'm sure intrigued by the signs at Handforth, I honestly can't remember them at this time or if I even saw them!

Yes my bum is starting to ache a bit from the lack of seat padding on 142s!

200 miles on Northern units is easy done, well if it's 156s and 158s at least! I did quite a bit on 142s in February and managed quite well!

That incident with the cyclist must have hurt badly!

Well I typed this one out last night, though I posted it but now it's vanished so we're having to start again! So please forgive the lack of detail in places!

16 May 2015: London Multimodal Challenge

I signed up to take part in the forum's multimodal London challenge today. The main reason behind this was to meet some of the faces behind the names on the forum, but also to make some in roads into London, which I don't normally get a chance to go and visit.

Firstly I had to actually get to London. It was winner 390050 to Euston. Now in London I had to make my way to the meet point at Bank, so I walked to St Pancras, headed for the Thameslink platforms and took 387123 and 387109 to City Thameslink. THe sun had come out so I decided to walk the rest of way.

I eventually found the rest of the group congregated at the meet point. Some people were planning on doing the challenge in teams, while others would be going it alone. I was here for the social side of things so teamed up with a couple of the others. At 11:00 we were off.

I'd spent some time the evening before looking at possible routes. I had a rough plan, but nothing fixed. This involved heading east, where there were plenty of bonus points to be had. We started by walking to London Cannon Street to pick up 465175 and 465003 to Greenwich. It was then a transfer to the DLR platforms where we took DLRs 124, 111 and 126 one stop to Cutty Sark. Here we made our way under the river using the foot tunnel to pick up the bonus points attached to this.

Emerging the other side we headed to Island Gardens, taking DLRs 53, 05 and 71 back to Greenwich. The plan was now to head for the Woolwich ferry which would attract numerous bonus points. So it was 465197 and 465171 to Woolwich Dockyard. A short bus trip (extra bonus points) took us to the ferry. It was supposed to be running every 10 minutes. Today, however, there was only one boat in operation and we waited 30 minutes before we were able to board, costing valuable challenge time.

On the other side of the river we headed for King George V to take DLRs 154 and 113 to Canning Town. Here it was a switch to the Jubilee line to West Ham, and the the Hammersmith and City line to Barking. The plan here was to take the GOBLIN which attracted extra bonus points, but as we arrived our required train pulled out of the station. Hasty rearrangements were made and the decision was taken to take a c2c service. Because of engineering works between Barking and Fenchurch Street we had the added novelty of taking 357023 to Stratford.

At Stratford we switched platforms to take 315803 and 315805 to Forest Gate. A short walk then took us to Wanstead Park, where 172008 (yes, we eventually made it onto the GOBLIN) was taken to South Tottenham. We then had a short bus ride to Seven Sisters. Here two things became apparent. 1: there was a football match on and the platform was full of noisy fans, and 2: this was 315 central, so not helping towards our overall score. We needed to get out of here quick, so it was 315829 and 315857 to Liverpool Street.

Here we make our way to the Central line, taking this as far as Bank, followed by the Waterloo and City line to Waterloo (well, where else would it go?). At Waterloo mainline it's 455721 to Clapham Junction, followed by 377611 to London Victoria. At Victoria we realise our bus requirements are lacking so a series of buses is taken to London Paddington. Here it was 360204 to Ealing Broadway and then 166208 back to Paddington.

There isn't much time left now, so we make our way towards the finishing location at Euston. We take the Bakerloo line to Baker Street and then the Metropolitan line to Kings Cross St Pancras. Another time check is carried out and we figure we have just enough time to squeeze in a short hop to Finsbury Park on 365520. We then take the Victoria line back to Kings Cross St Pancras, followed by the Northern Line the short distance to Euston. We arrive at the finish location just in time.

After the deadline has passed we tot up our scores. We managed 44 overall and this puts us in second place, just two behind the winning score of 46. So had we not had the delay with the Woolwich ferry we might well have won! But as I said, I wasn't taking part to win, but rather to meet some fellow forumites, which it was great to do.

It was a shame that I couldn;t go to the curry, but I had an advance ticket and was booked on a specific train. That said after everyone departed there was just enough time for a couple of cheeky shack attacks. So I took 378217 to Kilburn High Road. It was then a short walk to nearby station South Hampstead to take 378224 back to Euston, just in time for my train back to Crewe. It was 390135 doing the honours, going via Birmingham - slower, but a few more miles to add to the mileage count.

So a good day overall - got to meet some new faces and made a very (very) small dent into my London requirements. So here are the stats:

Total mileage: 391m79ch
Total winners for haulage: 21 (only counting NR stuff)
Total new shacks: 13 (only counting NR stuff)
Total cost: £33.00

18 May 2015: Northern Day Ranger No. 3
This week I'm in Yorkshire so the perfect opportunity to get some more Northern stuff done. Of course I have to get up there first, and the Northern Ranger provides a cheap way to take an interesting route to Hellifield.

I had to drop some things off into the office this morning, so rather than leave from the usual shack at Crewe, I would be departing from Stoke-on-Trent instead. Already, however, things were staring to go wrong. The bus from work to the station took over an hour to make a simple four mile journey! Northern trains from Stoke are every hour, so missing it would really eat into precious bashing time. What's more I still need to get the day ranger.

The bus arrives four minutes before departure time. I rush to the ticket office to get my day ranger. And they take absolutely ages (they're much more efficient at Crewe)! The ticket seller has to go out the back to find out how to issue it and at this point I console myself to the fact I'll miss the train. My ticket is eventually issued and as I'm about to leave the station to head for a cafe there's an announcement to say the train I wanted is now delayed by five minutes. It appears the Virgin and Cross Country services are delayed, and the signallers have given these priority over my Norther stopping train - it's one of those rare occasions where delays work in your favour. I make my way to the platform to find dud 323232 waiting.

We're finally on the move and I stay on the 323 all the way to Manchester Piccadilly. Here I purchase a sandwich to sustain me later on and a coffee to perk me up and keep me warm on this miserable and damp morning. I then board 142050 to new shack Ashburys. Three minutes later it's 323238 to Guide Bridge. There's a bit of a wait here for my next train. "Lovely weather!" a member of station staff comments as they change the bin bags - it's not. It's chucking it down and the platform shelter is doing nothing to keep me or my bags nice and dry. Eventually 142049 arrives to take me to Romiley.

There's another wait here, but fortunately a warm and enclosed waiting room, meaning I have a chance to dry off a little. 142050 (again) then shows up to take me back to Manchester Piccadilly, this time via Reddish North. At Manchester I step off the train to find out that 142050 happens to be the next train I need, heading to Sheffield. I re-board and we make our way to Sheffield along the Hope Valley line - new track for me. Another caffeine hit is needed so a coffee is purchased and take 142096 and 144003 to Meadowhall. It's then a made rush to the platforms on the other line (causing coffee spillage) to make the connection onto 158851 to Barnsley.

The objective now is to get the Penistone line added to the coverage map. It's 144023 doing the honours making its way around the tight corners. The gradient on this line also seems quite steep. The sun has also started to come out - the weather always seems better in Yorkshire! Just before we get to Huddersfield the train is invaded by loads (and I mean loads!) of school kids making their way home.

At Huddersfield I find 150117 ready and waiting to take me to Leeds. At Leeds I fight my way through the hoards of commuters (make even more difficult I have to traverse one end of the station to the other) to catch 150271 to Hellfield.

Having dropped my heavy bags off at the house (trust me it's been a real pain to lug them around so far) I need to head into Settle to pick up provisions for the week. 158843 takes me there and 158860 takes me back.

Overall a good day and plenty of new track (mainly the Hope Valley and Penistone lines) can be added to the coverage map. Stats as follows:

Total mileage: 217m55ch
Total winners for haulage: 11
Total new shacks: 6
Total cost: £12.50

I sympathise with the weather situation on Monday, it was dreadful! It got nicer around Birmingham and Hereford in the afternoon when I was going home though so couldn't complain about that.

That challenge around London sounds like fun, I would guess even better for you since you had company on a trip, which I'd imagine like it is for me is unusual but welcome!

At least you've made a start on London's enormous fleets, I've been going there for a long time and still need lots down that way! Even with a 3 day session in the autumn I will still end up coming away with tons to go for, it's just how it is especially when you're cranking on the Tube too!

Thank Goodness the 323 was late off Stoke in the end, that must have been quite the relief! I know how you feel with carrying heavy bags around and still needing to find a way of carrying a hot coffee with you too. Been there done that and it's always difficult to do!

A good time had still though, can't complain at that bargain price!

The challenge sounds like great fun! And so does the Northern trip, even if it was a soggy day out...

Northern Day Ranger No 4

Another Northern Ranger! Today's objective would be a big bit of track scratching for me. Namely the Cumbrian Coast line and the line between Carlisle and Newcastle. As an added bonus my itinerary would include some class 37 haulage.

The ranger itself had been purchased in Skipton the day before, so I walked to the local Yorkshire-base, Hellifield which this morning was shrouded in a dense fog, so much so you could only just make out the semaphores trowards the end of the platform (how do the drivers see them in this weather?)

Anyway winner 150206 showed up to take me down the familiar Bentham line. I found a seat and tucked into a reduced Belgian bun purchases at the Coop the night before. I alighted at new shack Carnforth. I could have made a made dash for the train sitting on the other platform, which would have allowed me to scratch another shack on the way to Barrow. But instead I needed caffine so made my way to the station cafe for a cup of coffee. The cafe is famous for being the location of the film "A Brief Encounter" and retains many period features... apart from the modern Italian coffee maker and the till with touch screen displat that is. The coffee hit the right spot an I had a little look around the exhibition in the rooms next door.

I then made my way to the platform to pick up my next train. This was running ten minutes late, but eventually lights on the horizon could be seen, with the tell tell noise of a class 37 being heard in the distance. 37409 was leading, with 37419 at the rear. I took my seat in the nicely turned out Mk II carriage and we set off.

While the seat was confy I wasn't that relaxed. I had a +6 at Barrow and we were 10 down. We were making time up, but then an announcement was made over the PA informing us there was a fault with the set due to take us to Carlisle, so the train we were currently on would now form that service. This at least meant the connection would now be guaranteed - so fears over. I hopped out for 30 seconds in Barrow-in-Furness to identify the loco at the back (I forgot to do this at Carnforth) an then we were off again.

However the fine views I was hoping for didn't materialise... the fog at Hellfield hadn't lifted and visibility was low. So as we pulled into Carlisle I was a little disappointed not to have been blessed with better views. It also would have been nice to get a couple more 37s in the book but it wasn't to be. Oh well four hours of class 37 action can't be too bad - and it's an excuse to come again and sample one of the many fine pubs along the way ;)

Now at Carlisle it was time to board 156477 towards Newcastle. This starts as a ScotRail service (and it was indeed a ScotRail unit), but converts to a Northern train when it gets to Carlisle. As we were winding our way along the banks of the river Tyne I studied a copy of the timetable I'd picked up at Carlisle and spotted an opportunity for a cheeky shack attack. So I bailed at Metro Centre to pick up 142086 for the rest of the way to Newcastle.

At Newcastle it was a quick dash across the bridge to catch 156484 back to Metro Centre. It was then only a short wait for 156444 which would take me back to Carlisle. 158845 would be doing the honours back to Hellifield, down the S&C of course. I get talking to a foreign student who thinks 1100 feet above sea level is pretty pants for a railway station (Dent - highest in England)... turns out he's from Switzerland so I think he has a bit of an unfair advantage there! As we arrive the evening sun has finally emerged... a little too late unfortunately!

It doesn't matter though. A good day has been had. Plenty of new track has been added to the coverage map (which I really must update soon!) and a fair few winners were an added bonus.

Stats!

Total mileage: 342m02ch
Total winners for haulage: 8
Total new shacks: 4
Total cost: £12.50

A good little adventure there! Shame about only one set with 37s out in the end, and right to be disappointed with the weather as the coastal bits are nice!

What's the ching like on the coffee at Carnforth? I might be popping in for a shack scratch in late July, and yes I have decided when I'm going! If you're about feel free to say hi :)

What was the Tyne Valley like in your eyes?
