14 car? Stop at Stafford

I was at Stafford last Saturday and I swear on P5, there was a sign for 14 car stops, but it made me think, what 14 car train would actually stop there. I couldn't think of any, but why have the sign if that's the case?

probably from old rolling stock - most platforms are littered with 2,3,4+ car boards, when all that is needed is a S board for all trains. Oh wait, can't make the season ticket holders walking in the rain, potentially, when the service is short formed can we :roll:

I've seen NSE, WAGN, ONE & NX signage, all in use, at the same station, not so many years back..

There's 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 car stop boards off the end of the up platform at Yatton, presumably harking back to the days of loco hauled stock with the short platform.

Quite a few tourist charters call at Stafford that might be getting on for if not 14 coaches.

Stafford resignalling has put paid to a lot of that, a charter went in not so long ago that was too long as the signals had moved back.

IIRC there was a 13 car stop at Newhaven Marine, although it's no longer possible to get a view of it because of the platform closure. Such things were common in the past.

2x5 + 1x4 Voyager on some kind of blockade buster? I think the Brum Int to Euston via the Chilterns were 15 car. That said, they don't run that way and VT don't have any 4 car sets any more.

There are some routes remaining in the South-East where platforms can technically accommodate longer trains than the stop boards stipulate, but it's not signed and you need to have specific route knowledge to know what to do.

It seems that even if a platform is longer than 12 coaches, stop boards are now rarely provided in excess of that, as the cost of fitting them out (though no doubt not exactly massive) is probably not worth it in comparison to the number of trains which actually call.

The most usual exception will, surely, probably always be elsewhere with any required Sleeper trains or loco-hauled stock.

Regional Eurostars are 16 vehicles long, although when GNER were using them the stop boards were marked "Class 373". I don't know if any stop boards went up in preparation for the North of London Eurostar services?

No good reason why any passenger should have to walk in the rain, if it's easy to avoid that by stopping a short train on the part of the platform nearest the shelters and the exit.

maybe that's why umbrella's were invented? I'm guessing, that you aren't a driver..

Try telling that to the arrival from Spalding train at Peterborough that terminates at the far end of platform 1.
