I need to look into the CAMRA app (do I need to be a member to use it?) as it would be one good way to keep my Spoons visit counts up to date, as the Wetherspoon Pubfinder app doesn't give you anyway of marking them off.

No you don't have to be a member of CAMRA to use the app. But there are two versions of the app. A free one where you have a limited amount you can do or the full paid version, which I think is only a couple of quid if I remember right to get the full dancing and singing app. It is still cheaper than the book and you can mark the pubs you have visited.

Fair enough noddy1878, I've done it 10 times this month already apparently

I'll try to remember to download the CAMRA app tomorrow, phone's off currently awaiting charging.

Meant to post this yesterday but I forgot! Hashtag was announced for Monday before I started work yesterday. #techsmerseyhunt is the hashtag eventually decided upon. The name of the game is to hunt down my last 3 507s and last 508, as well as go after as many required Merseyrail shacks as I can :)

As usual tweetage to begin around 0630. Bring it on already! :D

Enjoy tomorrow chief. Hope the weather is a bit more pleasant for you than it is up here today. Doesn't make much different when you are on the train but I always find it a bit more enjoyable looking out the window if it is sunny and people are smiling. How and when do you arrive on Merseyside?

Coming up via Chester and on the 1031 from Chester. Heading home via Crewe on the 1504 off Lime Street. I know it's not much time up there but it has to be done this way.

Agreed on the weather thing, it's not grand here either today but whatever it will be, will be. I aim to be posting the trip report tomorrow night, at least so is the plan!

That is a flying visit but better than nothing mate. With the frequent services and short gaps between stops you should get a fair bit done. :D

I'll let you all cast an opinion on how it went...

20/04/2015 - Tech's Mersey Hunt

Finally, I'm returning to Merseyside, having not been since 14th July 2014! How did this trip come about then, I hear you ask. Well after several rounds of extreme examination of my available funds and outgoings, I discover I had some funds I was unaware of previously so actually had money to go on another bash! This one got booked before last week's Great Escape trip, and I settled with coming back the same day. This unfortunately means a really short day out, thanks to the last bus home being at 1815, and I have to suffer the dreadfully dull route to Chester via Wrexham going north. Still, a 3.5 hour bash in Liverpool is better than nothing, and more than I'd have had if I went via Crewe both ways! £20 each way is not bad to be fair either, considering the mileages involved. The name of the game today is a two-parter. Firstly it's hunting down my last 3 507s for haulage and the same for my last 508. Secondly it's getting as many Merseyrail Northern Line shacks I need in the book as possible. I suppose in a way going to Liverpool via Chester is going to be beneficial, as I can keep an eye on the Wirral lines somewhat on my way to Moorfields. The alarm goes off at 0600 and it's time to finalise preparations for departure, with breakfast and filling the travel mug with Douwe Egberts being the priority. The usual bus is out on the first run to town, on which I get on with updating my commuting logs.

Rather cold again this morning, it was last Monday too. A pattern is emerging this month, thankfully I had my really warm hat on so it was bearable! I wonder, as I play music for the first time since Thursday morning, whether the Gods of Merseyrail will be kind to me today, fingers crossed! At least there's no need for a supply raid at Morrisons this morning, having prepped lunch and multiple bottles of squash last night. I could do with another coffee though, the one I had on the way to town is not enough! I end up in Morrisons after all, the need of the facilities was too great. Caffeine requirements are met with some Monster, still on promotion at £1 a can. Of course, I get two so as to avoid the need for a coffee stop later. Time to pick up the tickets for today, and I discover on an ATW poster that Ebbw Vale Town is to open this summer. At last, and I now have something to head to South Wales for again! It's 175105 on the 0721 Cardiff Central to Holyhead today, and once my notes are updated it's time to get to work on my moves book. That big job has been outstanding for just short of 2 months, high time I got on with it! I make a lot of progress with it before I get to Chester, and it's warmed most significantly since earlier! Super Dud 507005 is on the 1031 from Chester to Liverpool Central, on said journey I'm constantly looking out of the window to ID southbound trains. None of the 507s or the 508 are on the Chester or Ellesmere Port services, and due to refurbishment the Wirral line platform at Moorfields is currently closed. That sure felt strange passing through non-stop!

After a quick look around outside at Central, I get an All Areas Saveaway for £5.10. 507023 was noted on an ECS move at 1128 northbound, so probably not going to get that one today. Dud 507027 is made into a Super Dud on the 1129 to Hunts Cross, off to Cressington for a shack attack first of all. Super Dud 508108 is up next for a shack attack at Blundallsands & Crosby, during which journey I have my lunch of ham rolls, devouring the second can of Monster Khaos during the interlude. That's followed by freshly Super Dud 507027 to Formby and 508126 to Hightown, the 508 now joining the Merseyrail League of Super Duds. 508111 is up next for yet another shack attack at Freshfield. 508138 is next to get me to Ainsdale, another one to highlight green on page 60 of my Baker atlas. 507033 surprises me next, as I didn't see it going to Southport. I've examined the timetable very carefully, twice, and no I can't risk getting Bootle Oriel Road in as well. I take 507033 to Hall Road, the 8th shack attack of the day. I have a quick look at the site of Hall Road depot, cleared some time ago by the looks of it and awaiting re-development. Quite a decent size depot judging by the open space, although NR's boards suggest it's 2.7 acres. 508138 is back and successfully files its application to join the League of Super Duds, Merseyrail Division.

There's no sign of the 3 507s or last 508 I needed for haulage, except for when I saw 507023 on that ECS move at Central at 1128, which I believe was on a Kirkdale to Birkenhead North EMU swap. Never mind, something to come back for this summer! At Central, as I'm running low on drinks, I stop off at Sainsburys Local before walking to Lime Street. Supply raid carried out, I happen to pass by a winner Spoons, The Richard John Blacker, and as I have time I pop in for a swift half. First Merseyside Spoons done, now on 43 Spoons with a great many to go! 350265 is taking me to Crewe on the 1504 to Birmingham New Street, I knew it was too much to ask for 350/3s to be used up here! I settle in for an enjoyable run, as Lime Street to Crewe is on the xx04 services in the daytime, due to running non-stop from Runcorn to Crewe. It's time for some tunes again, starting with a top favourite from the nostalgia collection. In this case, that's Jet Set Radio's Magical Girl. Other dips into the same collection brings out Sash!'s Ecuador and Hot Action Cop's Fever for the Flava. Ooh,that's calling out to be used for a trip title! I would say it's been a disappointing trip, due to getting no winners, but it's been good for mileage, enjoyment of classic BR EMU action with 507s and 508s and, of course, a much needed return to Merseyside! I still have a total of 5 shacks within the Saveaway area to get, so with the 319s to enjoy next time too I have plenty to come back for in the summer , before then if I can!

It did seem weird seeing 319s at Lime Street, they will be enjoyed next time for sure! Yes I'm already planning to come back at the first available opportunity, just a case currently of finding a day I can do so on, as I don't have an available Monday for over a month yet! Not long before Crewe I was going to check my NREA for something, then realise my pocket was empty. I'd only dropped them out of my pocket during the use of the facilities! Thankfully I went back and both it and the notebook were still there, phew! It's time to soak up the sunshine before joining the 1530 Manchester Piccadilly to Carmarthen at Crewe, and it's 175102 taking me home. Much to my surprise, 66752 is a winner for sight as we curve around by the DRS depot, which is near enough empty! Time to get to work on the moves, which by Craven Arms has me up to the end of March's epic London bash. I have a short break before adding the recent Great Escape moves, today's lot and the mileage figures can be added another time! I start adding today's journeys to the RailMiles app, but it doesn't like Blundallsands and Crosby. Another one it doesn't like, I'm going back to my basic account without the use of the app, it's getting on my wick anyway! At least I'm not far behind on my bookwork now, certainly in a much stronger place with it than I was this morning! Back in Hereford and it's awaiting the bus home, during the interlude I upload this trip report. It's not been the best of trips, next time I'm after gen! Still enjoyed it all though, now bring on the next big trip! My next trip is more of a point-to-point one, due to visit my godmother with my Mum in Heptonstall next week. Well, so is the plan at the moment!

Sounds like an enjoyable if less productive day out. Is that that wee village near Hebdon Bridge? Interesting one that.

Well I've finally managed to get round to reading your Great Escapes and also just read your Merseyside outing. Good reads as per usual!

Some good work on the LM network there! Given the size of the network and the frequency off services LM's great escape is incredible value. Haven't seen the new Northampton station yet... Looks swish!

Shame about the no winners in Merseyside... I guess the closer you come to competing a class / TOC the harder it becomes! But at least you've reduced your shack requirements. Am planning a bit of Merseyrail action in early May myself, probably focused on the Wirral lines.

Out of interest, what do you classify as a super dud? (You've probably said before so sorry for asking again!)

Oh, and I'll forgive you for mixing me and andyb2706 up... this time ;)

At least next time you can go for the units and wait for them to come to you seeing as though you have only one easy station to get. Slightly annoying not to get anything though i must admit!

Shame about the lack of winners, but an entertaining report! At least you got most of the shacks marked off eh :)

And for the record, the new Thunderbirds series is growing on me... ;)

It is, not sure how to get to it to be honest yet! Obviously train to Hebden Bridge but I only assume there's a reasonable bus service onwards!

Glad to hear you've enjoyed the reads :)

I'm already looking forward to reading the details of your Merseyside adventure, hopefully I'll be up again by early June but who knows?

A Super Dud is a train that I've travelled in all the coaches of basically. I still haven't decided what a Super Dud turns into when I clear it for the magical thou!

I suppose it gets easy to mix the regular trip report writers up, there's loads of us these days!

Oh absolutely, lots of Moorfields to Sandhills and around the Wirral Loop to come! Plus some of them may come as I score Spoons around Merseyside!

Good to hear the trip report made your commute more interesting :)

Aye my Baker does look better for sure! And I'm glad the new series of Thunderbirds is becoming more appealing, I wasn't sure about it to begin with but I was soon hooked!

Disappointing you never got the 4 you were looking for but it sounds like a good day none the less. Already looking forward to the next journey, whatever that may be.

It is going to be hard to get those last 4 without any gen. Glad you had a nice day though, the weather was alright wasn't it? What are the last stations you need out of interest?

Agreed, next time I'm going to try and source some gen. Figured I'd give it a go without while I go shack scratching, any coming along then would be a massive bonus!

Stunning weather yesterday, made for some nice lazy festers between trains, a good chance to soak up the sun!

In the Saveaway area, I now need:

Rainford
Meols Cop
St Helens Central
Upton
Bootle Oriel Road

Which shacks do you need on the Borderlands line then?

A good trick for Upton is to come from the Wrexham direction and bale short of Bidston. It is then only about a 10 minute wait for the 150 to come back.

I need all of them bar the Wrexham shacks, Shotton High Level and Heswall. Aye Upton will be far easier to do from the south! One day I'll be up there to do them, plenty of other stuff that is taking priority so I probably won't be up there until the 2020s

In other news, I've booked myself a trip to Edinburgh for early September. I daresay it's obvious that I'm going up to do the Borders Railway, and I have my fingers crossed it does indeed open on or before September 7th as that's when I'm up there! Blindtraveller and I expect to be two of the very first forum members to be covering the line, and of course there will be a massive trip report from that day!

It'll be my first flights since November, when I did the trip to Stockholm! First Flybe flights in even longer, I think that was September 2013!

Obviously there's still ages to go yet, a little over 4 months, but I wanted to get it organised as soon as I could! I still need to book a hotel for the Monday night in Birmingham, but that can wait for now, the core part of the trip has been booked!

I'm not now going up to Hebden Bridge on Monday, that trip is postponed for the duration. So having gone from first planning the Borders Railway trip at 1450 to booking it by 2100, a round of TPP I thoroughly enjoyed there, I'm now in TPP for next week!

I'm not sure where I want to go yet there, several options are available though. I might take it easy this time around and do a Daytripper around Birmingham. I've got plenty of Midland Metro trams to get in the book so doing some work on those would be good. As would lowering the amount of 390s I need, and of course getting started on the 68s would be more than welcome too!

As usual, a tweet will go out when it's known what I'm up to, but if I do indeed go for a Daytripper I might end up re-using January's hashtag yet. Something to ponder on the commute to work tomorrow!

Looking forward to the above. ScotRail seam confident of the 6th for opening but the 7th will be its 1st major test? Given that if the A to B opening is any example the Monday will be when they go for the BIG Launch thing.

Bah, you will beat me as I'm going for that line on the 20th September hopefully (I'm assuming it will have a Sunday service), gives me a chance to sample some 92 action on the sleeper as well :)

The Borders line shall indeed have a Sunday service, albeit hourly. Better than nothing anyway! Your mega Scottish trip should be good Tech, the weather up here can still be tolerable around that time of year, just before winter hits.

Techniquest, you must let me know when you are next going to be at either Rainford or St Helens Central so I can give you a lift between the two. Rainford can be a bit tedious to wait at, particularly with hourly services, however sometimes services pass each other there but it is hit and miss. There is also a Rainford-St Helens bus but again, timings are a bit rubbish.

There is a bus route near Rainford that has to do a 3-point turn in a cul-de-sac to continue it's journey (Rainford-Ashton in Makerfield). I bet you didn't know that! :P

Correct, I didn't know that. That's quite a funky little fact, I daresay there aren't a lot of routes around that do that! Going to be a while before I get back to Merseyside, to be honest I doubt it'll be this year now, so much to do across the country!

I did Edinburgh in September 2013, it was an incredibly warm day. The complete opposite of Ayr that day! Fingers crossed the weather's acceptable for this trip :)

Kite159, I'll let you know what it's like ;)

Interesting that! :)

I've entered into another round of TPP tonight now, having received help from CallySleeper :D Time to settle on the relevant hotel and how to get to the Northern Rail empire on the cheap, oh and decide which day I'm going up there!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
That's done now, after much looking around at the options. Hotel booked, Advances to Leeds booked, although it's just occured to me I go up on 31st May and I now seem to recall that Northern Rover is blocked that day. Hope I'm mistaken of course, otherwise it'll have to be a West Yorkshire Day Rover on the Sunday and only a 5.5 hour cranking spree on the Northern Rover on 1st June instead!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I meant to announce Monday's hashtag last night but didn't for some reason. It's been revealed on Twitter as of this morning, and it's to be #techsgoinginblind

I shall reveal the details in the trip report, which is due to be posted around 1725 Monday evening, as to the story behind the hashtag. Less than 45 hours to go until the results of my first local bash in months are revealed!

Why is the Northern Rover blocked?

I swore blind when I made that post that I had seen seen somewhere the ticket was not available in the last part of May. I queried it via Twitter yesterday and it wasn't mentioned that I would have any issues. I'll see in the meantime, and I'll see if Leeds can issue it on the day. If not I'll use it on the Monday after all.

Just checked the T&Cs of my Northern day ranger application form. It has this to say:

2. Travel is available from Tuesday 5 May - Sunday 28 June 2015 (excluding 23 - 31 May).

Sorry to disappoint :(

My bad for not remembering that until well after booking the Advances and hotel  I can still do a West Yorkshire Rover on the Sunday, which is still on the list of things to do this year. I also could see about popping into Hebden Bridge and onwards to Heptonstall that day to visit my godmother, I shall get in touch with her soon and see whether that'll work out for her too.

0845 to about 1400 is still a little over 5 hours to get from Huddersfield to Leeds on the Monday morning and get on with the plan, then join the TPX home at 1420 or whatever time it is. Should be able to get most of the Harrogate Loop stations done in that time, but of course we'll see what happens at the time!
