Cracking read as always, certainly kept me occupied on the (seemingly longer with every new job) commute. Which, incidentally, started with a short trip on 350369 today!

Tracking down the last one of a required class always seems to be a pain, hope you get it next time :)

350369 0746 Euston-Crewe, 1102 back, 1446 Crewe etc (Tue)

Cheers, sadly I'm back to work today so can't chase it! Worth pointing out the 350/3 on 1102 Crewe to Euston yesterday (350374) went onto 1454 Euston to Northampton not 1446 Euston to Crewe.

If I wasn't working today I'd be going for it, oh well next time I'm out it might produce. Indeed, by then we might end up getting 350/3s in Birmingham!

As promised, the trip report for today is ready!

14/04/2015 - Tech's A Space Man, Day 2

Not the comfiest sleep I've ever had, indeed these beds are on a par with Travelodge! Still, it did the job eventually, and at 0730 the alarm's going off and demanding I get up. As almost everything was prepared last night, I'm all done and out the door within 15 minutes. Keen readers will notice one thing in particular, that I don't mention coffee or a travel mug, as is usually the case for my trips. One very good reason for that, Ibis Budget hotels don't have a kettle! I decide to do the walk to Five Ways this morning, in a bid to increase my mileage and, of course, to briefly enjoy some Starship action. I get out the Wetherspoon Pubfinder app, as the map was loading far quicker on that than the maps app usually does! It's about a 16 minute walk from the hotel, and I have a few minutes to wait yet, in which time 170509 and 153334 are held at the red signal at the end of the platform. Perfect opportunity for a couple of photos then! Starships 17 and 16 arrive to take me the short distance to Birmingham New Street, with Starship 17 one step away from being a Super Dud [Starship 16 was already in that club - Ed] now. It's off to Subway for the first time since I came back from Newcastle, a little over 2 months ago, for breakfast. A footlong sausage and cheese sub and a coffee came to £4, so more expensive than my McDonalds move would have been, but at the same time more filling and longer lasting!

170509 and 153334 at Five Ways by 43002, on Flickr

153334 at Five Ways by 43002, on Flickr

Back to New Street and it's off to platform 10b for the 0849 to Hereford. The 0709 from Hereford gets in and that had 170630 and 170514 on it. 170514 is removed and 170630 is left to run solo on the 0849 to Hereford. This one is by some way my highest mileage 170, at 605m58c before this move [so will be on 660m63c when I get back to Hereford - Ed], it's been a while since I last had it too. Now I've got a table and somewhere to sit, it's time to devour breakfast. Boy that goes down well, fuelled up nicely now for work later! Off we go right time, and after updating the notes and NREA it's time to write up the trip report for today. As I previously alluded to, it's not going to be an interesting read! I see when I looked at my NREA I was actually only one coach from making Starship 17 a Super Dud, only problem is I got in the wrong coach! D'oh! Never mind, it will have to be done another time! I see the 0849 Hereford to New Street at Worcester Foregate Street, incredibly it's 153375 and 170517 again. Two days in a row it's been that pair! andyb2706 on the forum [I did originally get confused between my fellow trip report writers, crediting crehld in error! - Ed] has inspired me, following his recent milestone of 1,000 haulages, to discover how many I've had. Going through my book has made me realise I've noted the Swanage Railway's 121, I've had it but not added the number to my NREA! The locos, trams and DMUs are counted now, the EMUs and Eurostars will have to wait until my commute home now. I've not included stuff that's been renumbered, for example 43206 is counted as that, despite having had it as 43006 as well. Scrapped stuff is also not counted, with exception of 143613 and 143615, I suppose I'm proud I had those! Data will be posted either tonight or tomorrow. Arrival at Hereford is at 1017, and it's a stunning day. Harsh that I've got to go to work!

So that's anther trip done, just 6 days until the next one when I have a mini day trip to Liverpool! Photos aren't uploaded yet, as I'm posting this in the interlude before work. They should follow soon enough though :)

Youve had 2 more 14x units than I'll ever have, assuming I actually clear all Pacer Classes befor 2020 or whenever.

Well done on getting the 323s in today, a bit of interest for the day and thanks for the very important Bed Info at the Ibis Budget (looking back I think that 1 used to be a standard Ibis) - it would seam by looking at TA that many others agree. Shant be booking that or indeed any other one of those in a hurry.

Oh yes, 370 had a fault on the way in by the looks of things. So the 1446 was a late start as they used the 1445 arrival, 350264 to Crewe then. Nice...

Great report, one of my planned trips later this year is to the southern end of the West Coast Main Line as I've only travelled through to London and never really spent any time there but reading your report I should have a good time.

Pardon my ignorance (again!!!) what is DBT?? As to your 350/3 and still needing one it is usually the case there is one awkward one to get but it makes it that bit more sweeter when you finally get it.

Knew I had a follow up question, What constitutes a super dud?

Ah fair games, glad I had it when I did yesterday then! Ouch to the 350/2 on a Crewe!

I was lucky I got those 143s by chance all those years ago (2005 I think they were gone), if I hadn't been living in Swansea at the time I might not have been in the area to do them!

Ibis Budget hotels were Etap in a previous life. Regular Ibis are better, from my experience of the one at Birmingham Airport. I will still use the Ibis Budget in the future, if the price is right of course!

If you don't have a good time on a GE on WCML South I'll be shocked!

My apologies, I assumed everyone knew DBT stood for Dog Box Thrash. Dog Boxes are just one nickname, but a popular one, for 153s.

At least with the 350/3 I know it'll be gettable another time, it should have a long life ahead of it yet! When I do get it I'll have a smile from one ear to the other, as it'll be quite the achievement to clear the entire LM fleet!

A Super Dud is a train I've travelled in every coach in the set. As you can imagine it'll take a long time to get a Super Dud 390, or in the nearish future a 700!

And think how easy it would be to get a super dud 153!

Another great report and congratulations on getting all but 1 of your needed 350s!

OK then, I have totalled up my unique haulages now. I haven't got my ST Publications book with me at the moment, so I haven't counted my Tube haulages yet. Anything converted (458/0s to 458/5s for example) isn't counted twice, for example 43006 isn't counted but its new identity, 43206, is. I haven't counted scrapped stuff either, so I haven't included the 2 460s I did many years ago, and my 87 haulage count is as a result looking dire!

Anyway, the figures!

376 locos/HST power cars
230 light rail sets/trams
908 DMUs
1,216 EMUs
8 Eurostar 373s (inc 2 North of London sets, not sure if they're still surviving somewhere)

Total: 2,738

Very pleased with that!

Jesus H Christ, so you should be tech, that's impressive indeed.
Another great read, by, you certainly got stuck into them 350/3's, great when your hopes come to fruition. Top effort mate.

Worth pointing out I've been on the scene for about since autumn 2003, although admittedly not really into the haulages game until 2005, and recording of moves was a bit iffy until late that year! I can only wonder what I could have got logged if I'd been writing it all down from Day 1!

In that time some stuff has gone (460s, A and C stock sets on the Tube for example), and plenty more stuff will be going in the next few years!

Just occured to me that my count of 37s includes some 37/4s which may have been scrapped now. My data could also change if I looked for what 87s I had, but only by a small number. I only have 1 458 in my count as they'll all go to /5s soon.

But yes, I am happy with that figure! I intend to count my Tube haulages tomorrow, not got the patience tonight.

1978 for me, a lot of what I'd been hauled off are scrapped or re-numbered, in that time but I had a good 10-12yr sabbatical in that, due to working crazy shifts, girlfriends, beer and loco hauled travel being replaced by 158's and HST's. the latter put me off big style.

A good read, as usual. You're far more dedicated than I am as regards chasing things for haulage, particularly multiple units - indeed I rarely recorded these before pacers came in (got 142001 in October 1985!).

Anyway - 786 BR diesel/electric locos, from 1971 (D1032 whilst on holiday, aged 5) to present. Plus 103 HST power cars. Should increase by 4 at the ELR this weekend as well... :)

Entertaining read once again. Your enthusiasm is infectious, alas work has to come before any more trips for me :( Interesting that you find Subway more filling than Maccy D's. I always feel hungry again fairly quickly after eating a Sub.

Work has got in the way a lot in the past with me too, fortunately I don't do such crazy hours any more! Beer and women were also a key cause of several months away from the scene in the not too distant past, when I look back I wonder what I was on! Thankfully things changed and it's no longer an issue :)

It must have been quite the big change at the time for you, certainly would feel tame compared to a NB 37 growling its guts out!

I am a bit obsessed with filling my books, that's for sure! I dread to think what I'll do when I finish the LM fleet and later this year the VWC fleet too! Well I suppose there will be the 68s, the occasional Chiltern 165 and Midland Metro trams yet, so not really a concern until 2016!

I'm working this weekend, as per usual, and I've already spent my remaining bashing funds on more trips so I can't afford to come up there anyway. Fingers crossed it's a good time though!

Work has to come first for a lot of the summer here too, the perils of doing what I do! Obviously not before the rest of my already booked trips, at least summer is almost guaranteed to generate plenty of overtime, handy for the autumn's big trips!

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't full full after my Sub, but I was far closer to it than I would have been if I had gone to McDonalds. Plus it did help I had a footlong sub!

I've managed to get my Tube unique haulage counts done this morning, and they are as follows:

43 Bakerloo
28 S7 half sets
22 S8 half sets
30 Northern
21 Jubilee
2 Waterloo and City
35 D stock
59 Victoria
36 Central
Total: 284

24 C stock (scrapped)
7 A stock (scrapped)
Total: 315

The numbers are low on most lines because, until fairly recent years, I only counted the carriage I was in. So instead of counting all 3 sets of C stock (for example) I would just log it as, say, 6502. Piccadilly, well I don't really use it anyway but I clearly didn't record most of the journeys on it from years ago when Heathrow used to be a key part of a London bash! Not that I recorded the 332s either for some reason, that's by some way one of my biggest regrets ever, not recording journeys in a proper fashion!

The 80's and very early 90's were my glory days. Come 1994 I went off to uni and a combination of music, girls and beer took up all my money. By the time I finished Uni in 98 pretty much everything was multiple units and I kind of lost interest.

I remember going to a Network NorthWest day with loads of unusual loco haulage around the Manchester area. At Manchester Victoria on of the first 158's was parked up. Me and a mate got o and my mate was very impressed and I remember him saying to me "I think we are on to a winner here, this is the future". I said "No its not, its the end" like a proper mizzo. Ha ha.

I still love the railways but my interest in bashing ended around that time. That is of course not to knock anyone doing it now. Love reading your trip reports Mr Quest. Always interesting and exciting.

I was pleased with my 1000...until I saw your total, I have a lot of work to do. But at least it means I have a lot of new stuff still out there to get. Roll on Monday :)

As to the super dud never thought of counting the carriages I usually just go after the unit. Although it would enliven my Metrolink and Class 333's if I started noting the carriages too, something for me to think about :D

Each to their own after all, I grew up on the MU railway so I love it! Glad you're still enjoying the trip reports, but I have to ask if you still log what you travel on these days?

As I mentioned in a previous post, I've been doing this for quite a few years, and spent a LOT of time and much money doing it! There's a lot to get for me too over the coming years, and when I last counted my heavy rail, non-preserved requirements I had around 1,100 trains to go!

A mate got me into doing the individual coaches years ago and I've never stopped doing so since. I don't count coaches on light rail stuff mind.

Is Monday your epic Highland Chieftain bash? I can't wait to read about that!

Work has got in the way a lot in the past with me too, fortunately I don't do such crazy hours any more! Beer and women were also a key cause of several months away from the scene in the not too distant past, when I look back I wonder what I was on! Thankfully things changed and it's no longer an issue :)
!

I know you love your trips and all that goes with them but really? Better than beer and women????? :p;)

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy beers etc, I'm in the pub 3 nights a week between finishing work and getting on the bus home. Since I got the Untappd app a while ago I've been rather busy beer ticking! And noddy1878 of this forum has got me hooked on visiting new Spoons when the chance comes up!

As for women, less drama for me with not being entangled with one!

EDIT: Photos are now added to the respective sectors of the trip report!

Mate I don't log anything at all anymore to be honest. I once was an avid hunter of locos around the UK but multiple units never held the same interest for me. It was probably the same for the generation before me when diesel was coming in. I loved being in New Zealand and seeing all their loco hauled workings. Same in Peru, that is where my profile photo is from. I still love travelling by train though.

It's the start of my East Coast Escapade (or ECE for short), Monday: Northern Heaton based 142's and Virgin East Coast. Tuesday: More Virgin East Coast and Great Northern 313's for which I still need 28 units.

Untappd App!? Not hear of that one before will have a look at it though, although I am using the CAMRA App to tick off pubs and hopefully trying to have a different beer at each pub.

Best place to try and get Great Northern 313s is in the evening peak (every 5 minutes), between Moorgate & Essex Road. They tend to get busier at Highbury & Finsbury and after Finsbury some run fast for a few stations. I would avoid using Highbury to interchange as it's not the easiest to get from platform to platform.

Good luck :)

Ooh nice, I'm off to Liverpool on Monday so heading the opposite way! Sounds like you'll have an amazing time, outrageously jealous mind!

Search Play Store (or the App Store if you're unlucky enough to have an iPhone) for it, once you've used it a couple of times it's a piece of cake to use and you won't look back.

I need to look into the CAMRA app (do I need to be a member to use it?) as it would be one good way to keep my Spoons visit counts up to date, as the Wetherspoon Pubfinder app doesn't give you anyway of marking them off.

55013: Aye it would be interesting to see what you've managed!

I must also agree with Kite159, the evening peak is by a long way the best way to get your 313s down. Almost all pairs of 313s from about 1530 onwards til about 1830 (not got the timetable to hand to check times!), with a key exception being the 1623 from Moorgate which is a single. Every 5 minutes too, so it doesn't take long to get them in! Essex Road and indeed Old Street have corridors linking both platforms together so if you're on one platform you can see what's coming down in the other direction. Well you'll need to cross-reference coach numbers with a spotting book mind, unless of course you're on the relevant platform. Worth noting that there's three-digit numbers on the end of the coaches that refers to the unit ID (018 refers to 313018, 063 refers to 313063 etc), on the platform side when heading north these numbers are in white. Believe it or not this will turn out to be very useful in your mission! Same for 317s and 321s, possibly 315s too.

EDIT: Oh aye, the 1734 from Finsbury Park is booked a 317/3, and first stop New Southgate. One of the few workings you can score GN 317s on that isn't Kings Cross to Finsbury Park!

However be careful as some of the three digit numbers on some 313s are faded away or covered in dirt.

I believe the 315s have them as well

Yes that's a fair point. Be prepared to check your coach numbers, just in case! For the most part those coach-end numbers are usually readable though :)

Good call, coming down to Hereford to finally score that one? If so make it between 1725 and 1810 ;)

Already done that Spoons, twice! I ended up doing St Albans Abbey and the two in Stafford.

The Wetherspoon app is rubbish. I use the Cask Marque app to mark them off. But is only any good if the pub is cask marque'd.
