So, after much procrastinating, I finally got round to booking my first proper day out of the year. After a bit of consideration, I opted for a Southern Daysave, with the hope of maybe clearing the bits of Southern’s network that you can’t reach by a travelcard. This meant doing Uckfield, Seaford, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis and a number of other bits here and there. Despite having some sort of plan about a week ahead, I did my usual thing of completely changing it the night before, which meant a longer day, but getting everything I wanted to do done.

My alarm went off at 0700 and so I was out of the house at about 0750 for the 25 minute walk to Sevenoaks station. On my way, I was surprised how quiet the roads were and I reached the station with ten minutes to spare. A return to London purchased, it was time to see what was on the 0823 to Victoria. 375815 and 375811 (both dud) roll in a minute late, and I get a seat near the front as I know I’ve got a tight connection at the other end. The train is also fairly quiet and at Petts Wood, we take the fast loop to join the Victoria Line. According to my spreadsheet, I haven’t used that bit of track since October 2013, hardly surprising since it only really gets used during engineering works. After a call at Bromley South, we take the Catford Loop and at Catford we hit the double yellows – we appear to be following a Thameslink service, and sure enough, when we eventually stop outside Denmark Hill, I see a 319 in the platform ahead. As we pass Cambria Junction, a trio of Networkers overtake us on the Atlantic Lines and we race them all the way to Victoria.

I’m expecting a +9 at Victoria and a RT arrival means a leisurely walk over to platform 16 to join the 0916 to Littlehampton. Unsurprisingly, the Daysave ticket doesn’t work the barriers. Formed of 3 377s, I join the front one, 377132, with 377160 and 377152 forming the Eastbourne Portion. We leave Victoria on time and at Clapham Junction, I’m surprised to hear a diesel engine somewhere. Sure enough, a FGW HST rumbles through – I’d completely forgotten about those diversions, somewhat worryingly since I’m booked to travel on one on Monday! Leaving Clapham, a trolley comes through – yes, a trolley! I’d forgotten they existed since they disappeared from Southeastern services. Passing Purley and its concrete tower designed to look like a signal box, I turn my mind to where we’ve got to stop and cripes! It feels like the journey through to Littlehampton is going to go very slowly. The journey onwards towards the coast is fairly fast and unremarkable and at Preston Park, I scratch the first new track of the day – the curve round to Hove.

The train gets busier from Hove onwards with lots of people coming and going. After seeing a family who look like they’ve stepped out of the 80s, we pass through Goring and Durrington on Sea, which both appear as attractive as their names suggest and reach Littlehampton at 1057, scratching the branch off my to-do list. The next train to Bognor isn’t until 1111, so I opt for a quick look round and it appears from first impressions that Littlehampton is one of those places that a tourist office would describe as an area’s “best kept secret” or as being “unconventionally attractive”. Oh, and my ticket doesn’t work the barriers here either! Back to the station, still fitted out with semaphore signals and onto 377148 (required) which is forming the train to Bognor. The train is fairly quiet until Barnham where it really fills up. Leaving Barnham, I site the white peaks of a Butlins and soon we arrive in Bognor Regis. The plan now is to head to Seaford via Haywards Heath, so the next train is the 1139 and so after briefly surmising that Bognor gives a good impression of being slightly less unpleasant than Littlehampton, it’s back onto 377148 to head for Barnham. As I get on, I notice the board mentioning delays around Haywards Heath, so I check on my phone to see if my planned connection at Gatwick is running. It appears to still be stuck at Haywards Heath on its way up, although they haven’t cancelled its return trip yet so I carry on. Arrival at Barnham is at 1146, giving me 3 minutes to cross to the Up platform to grab 377449 arriving from Portsmouth.

As we run along the Arun Valley, I think back to the last time I travelled this way, more than a year ago now. I seem to remember it was the last weekend before the resignalling. Today however, we’re signalled with LED signals although I don’t see a lot of these as I’m too busy trying to plan connections using Thameslink services. At Horsham we join 377138, yet another winner, and I see on RTT that my expected connection is running after all – it appears they’ve nicked a set from the Bognor and Portsmouth runs. Arrival at Gatwick is 1 minute late and so it’s over to platform 7 to wait for the 1249 to Lewes. After managing to get lost between platform 1 and an especially windy platform 7 I eventually get there and see the train is 4 minutes down. Whilst I’m waiting a group of men in denim and flares come onto the platform. So we’ve had 80s, 70s… I wonder what’ll come next. Whilst I wait, I hear an announcement that FGW services to Reading are starting from Redhill, due to being low on fuel as a result of the Reading works. Eventually 377131 and 377127 arrive (again both winners) and I board a busy rear unit to head for Lewes…

Well that’s all I’ve got time for at the moment. I’ll try and do the rest tomorrow morning before I head to Somerset for the week, but otherwise I’ll get it done next weekend.

Sounds like a busy day so far on 377s, missing a lovely 313 between Littlehampton & Bognor :)
Haha, I'll be remedying that later

Here we go with part two:

So, after boarding 377127 and 131 at Gatwick, we head south to Haywards Heath where the train divides. Despite plenty of announcements, one couple still jumps off the train at the last minute, after the portion of the train they thought they were on had left. We leave Haywards Heath 3 late and head towards Lewes, with the line between Keymer Jn and Lewes being required. The sun finally comes out around Plumpton and we reach Lewes still three minutes down. It’s then over the footbridge to catch the Seaford train which is just creeping into the platform as I get over in the form of 313206 which is required.

We leave on time at 1328 for the journey down to Seaford to cross off yet another branch I require. Newhaven seems fairly sad with piles of scrap metal lying around and reach Seaford a minute late where again I take the opportunity to wander a few minutes outside the station. Back on board 313206 we’re off on time to head to Brighton. At Newhaven the train gets busy, with a mother and toddler getting on, the mother informing him that they’re not going backwards but “frontwards”. This time we’re not stopping at Southease and after creeping into Lewes again the train empties out.

I’m going all the way through to Brighton this time as I also need this bit of track. We’re all stations to Brighton which we reach one minute late at 1431. I’ve now done all the track I need except for the Uckfield branch. Rather than head all the way up to East Croydon, all the way down to Uckfield and all the way back up again, I opt to do things differently and head for Lewes again to catch a bus to Uckfield.

After getting food in Brighton (at last, barriers that recognise my ticket!) and listening to the band playing outside, it’s back into the station in time to catch the 1510 to Lewes. 313215 (another required unit) is waiting in platform 8 and, after listening to some northerners complaining about the cost of what sounds to me like some very reasonable parking charges, we depart for Lewes. Arrival at Lewes is one minute late at 1526. The bus to Uckfield leaves at 1600 so using my phone to find the bus stop I arrive in good time. (For reference, if you’re making this journey yourself, the bus stop you need is the one directly outside Waitrose, not the bus station across the road. The fare was £3.10.) Another man joins me at the bus stop about 15 minutes before departure and he manages to get through about 3 cigarettes before the bus arrives.

The bus arrives at 1557 and departs 1 minute late at 1601. Not being a fan of buses, I couldn’t tell you what sort it was, except it was a cream and red double decker. The journey to Uckfield is bone shaking but uneventful and we arrive at the railway station in Uckfield just as a 171 is arriving from London at 1622. 171806 is in the platform and I board with about 10 minutes to spare. The train’s fairly quiet as we head north and as we arrive at Eridge, there’s a steam locomotive hauling a train in the Spa Valley Platform. As we depart, 37254 is backing on to it to take it back to Tunbridge Wells. At Ashurst, we pass another train and by Oxted, the train is pretty full. With everything I wanted to do having been done, it’s time to head home.

Arrival at East Croydon is at 1733 and so I head over the footbridge to platform 1 for the last train of the Daysave to head for Victoria. The 1743 arrives as 377201, 377414 and 377444, a triple win to finish off the day. At Clapham, there’s an HST in the yard, and we reach Victoria just after 1800, just missing a Ramsgate train. Oh well, at least my ticket worked the barriers! The next one’s just arriving now and so I join 375604 and 375703 for the return journey to Sevenoaks. By 1831 almost every seat is taken and the journey south is quicker than it was coming up. Except for a girl sitting boredly whilst her father speaks to strangers about the nearby TV masts, there wasn’t much to see on the way home and eventually we reach Sevenoaks on time at 1910.

So there we go, all in all a great day.

That's definitely quite useful to know about the bus from Lewes, not bad ching really either. I certainly hope I remember its existance for when I do my planned DaySaves later this year.

You certainly did well on the winners front, I take it you haven't done much on Southern before?

Not an awful lot, no, although I'm more of a track person than a haulage person TBH. I've never been one for going up and down the same piece of track 20 times to scratch off units :)

Fair, that does get boring after a while. I think that's one reason why I started shack scratching, makes for much more variety.

Indeed, any winners from shack scratching can be treated as an added bonus :)

Sounds you had a good day in Southern land :)
