Hi Guys,

A heads up to any of you planning a visit to Manchester Victoria over the Easter holidays...don't

Manchester Victoria is shut down from the early hours of Friday 3rd April until Monday 6th April.

This is to do with work on the electrification scheme, and if my sources are correct the closure of Manchester North Signalling Centre and its transfer to the Manchester ROC.

Manchester North SCC still has five years left before it transfers to the ROC.

The shutdown of Manchester Vic is primarily for the electrification.

Might it just be Manchester Victoria panel (if there is such a thing) moving from Manchester North to Manchester ROC?

It was going to move in 2019 but it would seem its been pushed forward (or at least one half has) as ive seen the same details as Andy B. Recontrol to the ROC over the weekend of the 3rd to the 6th.

The east section controls from just beyond Rochdale Road Bridge while the west section controls the stations and junctions, plus the road stone terminal so could well be just one half. There will be a road open to Newton Heath via Philips Park West junction via the Brewery curve except from 0001 Sunday to 0001 Monday.

The connection to the Metrolink line at Man Vic East Jn (6607 A/B points) is being recovered next weekend, I don't think it has ever been used.

MNSCC has Deal Street, Victoria, Miles Platting and Thorpes Bridge interlockings. So it sounds like the last two might be moving over.

The Metrolink Crossover was never completely commissioned as designed; the speed-off tamper was probably its last use!

In what respect Paul? There is work next weekend to impose the long-standing Temporary Speed Restriction of 20mph into platforms 1 & 2 as a Permanent Speed Restriction, but other than that I don't think there is any work just yet affecting operation of those bay platforms.

The WONs for next week (W/C Sat 28/3/15 - WONs run Saturday 0001 to Friday 2359) still show Manchester North, East Panel operating as it always has. Unless there has been a monumental oversight, it will be business as usual as far as we are concerned.

I only mentioned it, having seen the thread time period, as we intend to visit Hebden Bridge during that period (my 70th birthday falls on 6th April) and we always prefer to make the journey by rail there than to drive in the 4 x 4.

When Manchester ROC opened with the Huyton panel last July, it was said that the next area to be moved in would be lines "to the north of Manchester" or some such remark, and "early next year" (ie 2015).

By the time the Easter period is over both MNSCC West Panel (Victoria Station) and MNSCC East Panel (Miles Platting to Thorpes Bridge) will be in Manchester ROC.

This was brought forward from 2019 to coincide with the electrification programme as it would be more cost effective than waiting another four years.

As to the Metrolink crossover it was always clipped and secured and could only ever be used during a possession to allow engineering trains to enter/exit the Metrolink. Don't think it has been used though.

Part of the crossover has already been taken out. The Metrolink end was removed during the redevelopment of the Metrolink station over the last twelve months as somehow it was preventing Metrolink from implementing line of site working.

MNSCC was only originally designed for five years because at the time they were planning Management Network Centres (granddaddy to the ROC's)....that was back in 1998, it lasted well.

From what I have been told there is going to be a shuttle running from the Eastern region terminating at Moston then ecs to the cross over at Newton Heath and back to Moston through to Sunday evening. It will only be after the last train MNSCC East Panel should transfer over hopefully.

Realtime Trains is showing that on Good Friday, Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday the hourly service from Leeds via Dewsbury will run as far as Moston; everything else terminates at Rochdale with buses to Manchester. Sunday sees no trains at all between Rochdale and Manchester with buses running instead.

Yes, I would still class that move as 'business as usual' as far as signalling is concerned, considering the number of diversions etc at the moment. The Moston turnbacks cause a bit of a headache for crew diagramming, crews either going 'pass' to Leeds to work back to Moston or taxis to and from Rochdale which has become a makeshift relieving point.

Interesting that there is no mention of this move to the ROC anywhere in operational notices, other than vague references to a lot of S&T work needing significant 'wheels free' periods. Are there any plans for future use of the wooden shed that MNSCC currently occupies?

No idea about the wooden shed. Although I do remember watching them build it and the brick building and at the time I said wow that's an big signal box....then I was told that the wooden shed was the box:lol:

It is usually the case that the commissioners require a period of "wheels free" when commissioning new bits of equipment.

I think the 4 x 4 will be pressed into service that weekend for the trip to Hebden Bridge. Moston station is somewhat short on station facilities these days.

The wooden shed is the box, the brick building is the relay room, telecoms room and power supply

At 0001 this morning MNSCC ceased to exist as it was transferred to the ROC. Progress in technology has too happen, but not without a tinge of sadness and feeling of loss.

The train describers at Manchester Victoria have been configured
to spell out a fitting tribute...

The "wooden shed" is a high-spec temporary timber sectional building with air-con and a suspended computer floor. I helped build it; shame to see it go after only 17 years of its 5-year design life used ...

You have the consolation that if it had been a permanent structure it would have been knocked down after a couple of years, or not used at all (see also Saltley).

Probably would have required points indicators and such like to be implemented - likely not to be a worthwhile cost
