I see what you mean, it isn't specifically nailed down anywhere.
However, the official walking time between the two stations is 8 Minutes (from NRE website) and the interchange time between trains at New St is 12 mins (from NRE pdf of Full Timetable) 8 mins is station exit to station entrance I think. Given the 12 mins interchange at N St, it certainly isn't platform-platform.

BRTimes puts it at 8 minutes.

That is just the walking time. Journey Planners add up the station A time, the walking time and the station B time to get the total interchange time.

An example journey from NRE

1932 LOB - BHM 1952
(12 min gap)
2004 BHM walk to BMO 2012) (8 min)
(minimum 5 min gap)
2018 BMO - SOL 2026

Yeah I saw 8 minutes, posted it and then thought that can't be right! So went back and have just read up on it :)

Thanks alot everyone....25 mins it is then "officially"...I'm going to be attempting a 13 min connection time in June...which while unofficial, I think is do-able...as long as the train running on time gods are with me!

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
A question here from somebody who is originally from the West Midlands:

Since when has the official minimum connection time at Birmingham New Street been 12 minutes?

I remember it being 15 minutes in the 1980s/1990s up to the point when I left for Scotland.

In peace

13 minutes is definitely pushing it given the relocation of the station entrance from the Moor Street end to Hill Street/Stephenson Street.

It's possibly a fudge to make certain connections "work". Certainly showing as 12 in the current eNRT. There's a similarly dubious 1 minute minimum connection at Gerrards Cross and High Wycombe over in Chiltern land.

Sutton (London) has 0 minutes if travelling on Thameslink only. This is because those services are entered as terminating and starting there, when in reality it is just a booked stop before continuing. Otherwise when travelling anywhere from Tooting to Mitcham Eastfields via Sutton and vice versa, journey planners would give a 30 minute wait at Sutton. Even now, they show a change at Sutton when it is the same train continuing on.

The way to prevent both the 0 mins fudge and the incorrect change of train, would be to enter them as one Luton to St Albans via Sutton service, but that would cause a lot of confusion when looking at live departures online. Stations would show nominal destinations to prevent people going the wrong way.

So a bit like Wirral Line services that are entered with the origin and destination as the same station via Liverpool Lime Street, but are advertised with a destination of Liverpool Central (changing back to the origin after James Street).

I made a 4 minute connection once. Slam door stock at Moor Street, threw the door open as fast as I could, sprinted out of the station, through the tunnel, into New Street, down to the platform, leapt onto a Voyager just as its doors were closing. Took five minutes sitting on the floor of the vestibule to get my breath back!

I didn't actually do it in 4 minutes, I think the voyager was 3 or 4 minutes late. (And this was of course before the New Street refurb too.)

In general, back when I used to have to do that change fairly often, I'd attempt a ten minute connection, but would expect to have to run.

Except knowing Thameslink they may not be smart enough to reliably advertise them correctly and make sure the advertised destination is sensibly shown!

(And then, people could travel all around the loop and back up to Luton etc under the "direct train" rule - I think that might be more why they split them)
