I can't really see the problem to be honest, not everyone conforms to certain ideals of "politeness".
In these type of situations, I actually find that many more people use such pleasantries in the UK than in other parts of the world. Elsewhere non-verbal communication seems stronger and a nod of the head passes for thank you.
Also, two people apologising when one has bumped into the other is a very British thing I've noticed.
