SWT - it is mentioned on the previous page of the thread.

I must be really unlucky, I've never met an SWT guard who doesn't bother checking for a photo card. (I have the same bad luck with my Network Card - it always gets checked too...)

The OP must be having all your luck, and that of every other SWT passenger.

I wouldn't go that far. I was once followed out of a station by 6 ticket inspectors, who stood in a circle around me and took details all because I'd thrown a ticket away. I never heard anything else about that though.

A season ticket should not be sold without a photocard being shown, surely.
That's easy to say, but weekly tickets can be bought from self service machines. It's really not significantly different to the requirement to have a railcard to validate a discount entitlement.

Whilst true, that's irrelevant as the OP says they renew from the Guard on the train (which was mentioned in the post Neil was replying to).

I don't ALWAYS renew it from the guard. Most of the time I renew it from a ticket machine. SWT now have the photocard. I will not buy a weekly ticket again, lesson learned. Two singles a day is a lot less hassle.

I don't see what hassle is involved in simply always carrying your photocard as you are required to do. The railway even gives you a small plastic wallet in which to carry both parts of your ticket, a further hint that it needs to be carried.

Yes, I understand that point very well now. I am after all paying the ultimate price for my stupidity. If I end up with a criminal record, serves me right.

I get the impression that nothing has been learnt, surely it's less hassle to buy one ticket a week than two a day. Or is there more to this?

It's a ticket irregularity. It hasn't carried the death penalty since the reforms of 1879...

I have a very irregular work pattern. If I start work at 10pm and finish at 6am the next day, that means I need to buy 2 singles.

I know. But it feels as though I've been caught clinging on to the carriage of a moving train, rather than simply misplacing my photocard.

I don't doubt that some of the posts on here have probably contributed to that feeling. But the questions raised on the thread are the same questions that will spring to a prosecutor's mind, so we aren't giving you the third-degree for fun.

As Flamingo has alluded to, even in the worst case the consequences of this incident aren't likely to be career-limiting or life-ending.

Not necessarily, depending on your next shift it may be possible to buy a return in the morning after finishing your shift thereby using the return portion to go back to work later that evening.

Yes, I do that if I'm sure I'll be back in the evening. Quite often I buy a return in the morning, find out that I'm not working in the evening and it gets wasted. So I have to buy a single the next evening and so on.

I hope that makes sense...

That wasn't the point I was aiming to make...I was suggesting that a weekly season ticket will not cause you hassle provided you just carry the photocard with you! Stick it in your wallet and it will always be there when you need it.

The reason you need it is because otherwise the tickets may get passed around and used by more than one person. Some countries do have transferrable season tickets, of course, but the UK doesn't (and you do get safeguards in return for that, e.g. an Anytime (Day) Return being refundable once a year if you have to buy one because you forgot your season ticket and noticed before boarding, though I forget if this benefit applies to weeklies or not).

Yes, I understand but to be honest, this whole thing has put me off of buying them. My own fault, I know.
