Hi area,
I'm trying to find my Grandfathers working records, I believe He joined
Cheshire Lines Committee just before/just after the First World War(before 1923) and worked in the North Liverpool area for the rest of his working life, retiring in December 1964.
If anybody has any info as to the Personnel records location I would be very grateful as I do not fancy going to Kew on the offchance they are there.

Thanks in Advance and Kind Regards,

Jenny51:roll::roll:

Firstly, most archives have at least a catalogue viewable online - some are gradually placing digitised images of documents online.

Secondly, with most archives, just turning up is not a good idea, as some items will be in fairly deep storage - or possibly not on the same site as the public access collection - and the level of staffing may not be sufficent for someone to just go and find things at a moment's notice.

Something like this could be with national archives, could be with a local authority archive, or could be with the national railway museum.

This page on NRM's website might be worth a look.

Happy hunting.

The staff records are at Kew, and Kew's holdings are well catalogued on line. Someone wrote an excellent book a few years ago, called something like "Was your grandfather a railwayman?" which set out very clearly how to go about tracking someone who had had a railway career. I'm afraid I can't be more precise as I don't have it to hand at the moment.

Hi jenny51

There are some railway records on ancestry.co.uk. The ones I know of are for the great central and the midland railway. Find my past has the NUR trade union membership for 1917-18. Some records at kew are also available from their website, either as order copies to be sent by post or emailed to you. If you want to pm me, I'll see if I can see any info for you.

Regards mark.
