I believe the initial cascade is of 20 units.

About 12 (you forgot Warrington BQ!).
More like 15 if the Liverpool-Preston portion of the Blackpool service goes electric with a split at Preston (not confirmed).
That would also cover the Lime St-South Parkway leg of the service.
Plus a couple of spares and a few more for training gets you to the 20 so far promised.
Unlikely in the May timetable, which is already inside the 12 week threshold and currently shows unchanged timings. I think we might see an "electric timetable" in December.

And it was almost going too well....
1H44 (1814 ex-LIV) is just crawling through Patricroft. After running a minute or two ahead of time, it's now snarled up in signal trouble.
They're... certainly different. Have enjoyed a couple of trips owing to a day off, no doubt thanks to forum contributors and the associated enthusiasm. Particularly appreciate the cleanliness. Never felt particularly quick off the mark, but then a staple diet of 350s and 323s has no doubt left me spoilt! No issues with keeping to a Sprinter time, it appears.
Perhaps as anticipated, today's 0840 ex-MIA did have Alex Hynes onboard. At least that's what the namebadge appeared to show!

I went out and about between Lime St and Newton-le-Willows today. Paul joined me at Newton.
It was all seriously fab.
Here are my champagne moments:
1. Very seasoned Northern employee of a certain age, in orange, at Lime St, beaming with delight.
2. Guard thrilled to be on the turn. He said 'they're great!'
3. From standing at Wavertree to steaming at Broad Green.
4. Through Huyton at Warp Speed
5. Some passengers looking round with pleasure and surprise
6. Smooth ride, early arrivals. (Guard said they were 7 mins early at Newton on the 06:16 out of Lime St.)
7. Seasoned veterans standing outside the Staff Mess Room at the country end of Platform 1 at Lime St, looking on.
A guard said all Lime St staff are now trained on 319s, with Wigan and (I think) Man Vic staff to follow. The current outline plan is Victoria in May and Wigan in September. He didn't mention WBQ and I forgot to ask.
Lots of films and photos of this momentous day, I'll add them later.

It's good to see that they are appreciated and the infrastructure is at least working well. The 319s have been and still are worked hard on the MML so they should cope with the relatively short hops in the NW.
No doubt the naysayers are just waiting for the first failure in service, forgetting that most train types fail at sometime.

Fantastic images and memories of the day, well done everybody. Well done also to all the people who made it possible, I am sure that the North West travelling public will enjoy the experience and they will be a massive success. Onwards and upwards now!

Not quite the end of the journey yet, but a definite start.
Between Ordsall Lane Junction to Manchester Victoria and Huyton to Springs Branch needs doing next.
And don't forget about phases 3 and 4, plus from Lostock Junction to Wigan, Manchester Victoria/Piccadilly to Stalybridge too.

Hello everyone I'm Billy Blue's red Liverpool supporting son! I normally get the 9:02am from Huyton to work each morning. But today got out that little bit earlier for the 8:40am. So here it is. The first ever electric train (319 363) to stop at Huyton station, calling into platform 1.

I filmed for as long as I could and in all the excitement almost forgot to get on the thing!
Met dad once I finally did get on board. He had a return from Wavertree as he had been on the inaugural service. He departed there and I stayed on to Lime Street.
Also took a couple of pics of it sat on platform 4 at Lime Street after I'd got off.

Great stuff. I bet half the waiting pax didn't have a clue it was electric, or assumed they all had been for some time. I wonder. Glad you remembered to entrain.

I've been told that I misunderstood the guard. Sufficient Lime St staff have been trained to run a service (as we've seen) with more being trained all the time. My apologies.

On the 8:40am Huyton to Liverpool cruising through the Edge Hill tunnels towards Lime Street. Second carraige from the front (facing backwards).
About as busy as a service through the Thameslink core on a Sunday afternoon! I imagine that the 319s are looking forward to their quiet retirement up north

As Northern's MD has been staying today, the 20x 319s will see Northern's fleet increase by 10%. That's got to be a good thing.

I was on 319363 out of Liverpool, this morning, When the guard came around checking tickets a woman asked him when the electric trains were starting. He said, "They have and you're on it!"

At least everyone has a seat, it is quite well filled and all these people would have been crammed into a 2 car DMU. It shows that 4 car 319s are not over provision, at least at this time of day, they merely allow people a relatively civilised journey for the first time in years!

I don't think I'd be too happy if someone stood in the middle of a carriage and started taking pictures. Not exactly normal behaviour is it?
