Hi all,

I'm after some advice from the wise members of this forum, since I've apparently lost all knowledge in this area!

As some of you will be well aware, I'm off to London in a few weeks (24 days today! :D) and rather looking forward to the epic red pen fest it promises to be. However, I've lost all my knowledge on Great Northern stuff, particularly the 313s and their services. I still need 11 of the 313/0s, and rather keen to lower this figure significantly.

However, when is it pairs of 313s start departing Moorgate? That will be my highest chance of scoring the 313s I need, the evening peak as there are, from what I recall, extra trains then which call at Finsbury Park but then not Harringay. I've got a timetable around somewhere from my last trip to London in February, but it doesn't help me determine what's 3-car services and what's 6-car services.

I'm also after 317s and 321s, 6 of each class I need. 365s I still need plenty of (21 IIRC) but not so fussed about those yet.

SWT wise I've got a ton of shacks to go after so it's less of an issue right now as I can still score away as I'm going along with those. Still, I would like a final run on a 458/0 if they're still likely to be running, any thoughts gang? Hounslow Loop trains, mostly 450s now correct? 456s I'm definitely keen to get some more of in the book, it's been many a year since my last one and I need quite a few of them. I believe they do all-day diagrams now combined with 455s, is this correct?

Angel Road, Northumberland Park and Ponders End are going to be interesting to get in the book from what I remember hearing with limited services. I can look into this but is it true?

317/7s, and 317/8s for that matter, are there any 317/7s running about the place yet again? Been many a year (2008 I think!) since my last 317/7 with 317714, would be nice to have some clearouts there. 317/8s, my NREA tells me I need a lot of them yet, where's the best place to get them (obviously GA somewhere!)?

Chiltern 172s, do these share work with 165s on the stoppers out to West Ruislip? I only need 172101 and 172104 to clear the whole 172 class and would be nice to finally achieve this!

I'm sure there was something else I wanted to query but it'll come to me eventually!

Finally then, Network Railcard. Before I spend £30 of money that would otherwise go into my savings account for 2016's grand plans (just over a year to go gang until that's revealed!), I've got two burning questions that really need answering:

1) If I buy an Off Peak Day Travelcard for Zones 1-6, on a weekday at 0935, do I get the 33% discount or do I have to wait until 1000 or do I not get discount at all on a Travelcard within the zones?

2) I'm anticipating making many trips around the South East later this year, hence the desire to get a Network Railcard. However, aside from the Travelcard query above, off-peak (after 1000 then) do I HAVE to spend £13 or more to get the discount, or can I still get discount on an Off Peak Day Return costing, for example, £12.50 then get discount applied to that? Similarly, do I get discount before 1000 at all?

Thanks in advance all!

Not too sure about the trains (I need a lot of them myself so may come back for the answers to your questions!)

1) No, minimum fare is £13 on a weekday. A Travelcard is £12. So nothing I'm afraid!

2) Once again, no, minimum *discounted* fare is £13. After the discount. So for example, a Travelcard from Watford Junction is £16.80 which goes down to £11.10 normally, but with a Network Railcard it goes down to £13. And not valid at all before 1000 I'm afraid.

Bashing is a lot more expensive these days in the Travelcard zones :(

Some of the Chiltern 172s work Marylebone to Stratford On Avon.

Although normally non-stop from Marylebone to High Wycombe & beyond.

Northumberland Park and Ponders End haven't got a limited service, Angel Road appears to be peak-time only (going by RTT), although if you hit it going Up on a Stratford bound service, you have a 10 minute wait for a down service

Sweet, I'll make sure I get a timetable for that one :)

Causton: Thanks, in that case I'll save my 30 quid and not get a Network Railcard!

I forgot too about the Stratford upon Avon runs on 172s, might have to look into what they are and do them on a WMDR once the Harbury landslip is dealt with.

a) If you've seen anything you need going in before your mark comes back out then you know when exactly it will come back out and can bash it then.

b) If you haven't seen anything you need going in before your mark comes back out, you'll know there's nothing in the tunnel that you need and you can get your first inbound required haulage safe in the knowledge that you aren't going to miss anything going the other way.

Don't forget 313s do still work of King's Cross as well.

11 needed out of 41 in total, however, suggests you won't have to wait too long for one to appear whether on a 3 or 6 car working; with this proportion I would suggest bashing the first few on the "one stop then get back asap" basis as and when they turn up and then going into the stalking mode described above only once you've got down to about 4 or 5 remaining.

458/0s are still going strong. You'll find the majority of Reading services worked by 458s still, probably all Reading services in the Off Peak. They're going to be around for a while yet. Hounslow Loop is mainly 450s still but with more 458/5s creeping in nowadays, as well as the odd 455, mainly peak hours but not unknown for them to turn up vice a 458/5 in the Off Peak. Only 2 456s that do an all day diagram at the moment, coupled to a 455.

The printed timetables do have information about the number of coaches the peak services are booked as. I believe it is A1 and A2 timetables you need http://www.thameslinkrailway.com/your-journey/timetables/

Hounslow Loop has been mostly 450s for a good 10 or so years now I believe, as SDO is needed in order to not be limited to 4 cars on a service or diagram calling at Chertsey or Virginia Water.
For 455s via Hounslow, departures off Waterloo on weekdays are at 0815, 0845, 0915, 1607 and 1707, as well as the 0632 Staines to Waterloo (not including those I'm not aware of ;)). Weekends usually become almost-all single 455 units if there is nothing requiring strengthening.
If you want an original 458 that way then it is the 1722 or 1753 Reading to Waterloo (again Weekday-only), which run via and call at Hounslow, Brentford, Putney and Clapham Junction.
And if you are looking for 459s, the list is here.
Finally, want to avoid 450s on Readings? Then don't go for these!
If you want a pair of 456s via Richmond, it is the 0745 Clapham Junction to Guildford! The 1805 Waterloo to Aldershot was 458s the last time I saw it, but not seen it recently.

Chiltern 172s, do these share work with 165s on the stoppers out to West Ruislip? I only need 172101 and 172104 to clear the whole 172 class and would be nice to finally achieve this!
I remember the diagrams that used to be in the "frequently requested" thread had several Marylebone to High Wycombe or Gerrards Cross and return workings, as well as those around Stratford mentioned by someone else. Sudbury & Harrow Road has a very limited peak service, while apart from Wembley Stadium the other stations to West Ruislip have a roughly hourly service.

Having lived in SWT land for a fair few years I've come to regard the network Railcard as a bit rubbish, so I think your decision is sensible. The only time it was any use was the weekends. I guess it works out for some of the longer distance stuff.

That said have you ever thought about a gold card? It's quite an up front investment and you really have to use it to get the most out of it, buy given the amount you travel around it might be worth it.

Some very wise advice there! I have since my last post found my GN timetable and found the roughly every 5 minutes 313s start running in the evening peak from around 1620, out of Moorgate. Obviously from Finsbury Park it's different patterns but it is that period until around 1900 that will give me the best chance of finding my 313s.

I thought I'd have no problems finding winners on 16th December 2014, needing 12 GN 313s at that time. My trip report of that day will confirm differently, that was not a fun fester at Finsbury Park!

313s don't seem to run out of Kings Cross much at all apart from at weekends, at least that was the case when I was down there last year. Think I ended up on a pair of 313s from Finsbury Park around half 6 in the evening to Kings Cross actually, perhaps I should return to double checking the timetable far more carefully...

Thanks for your help!

My GN timetable sadly does not show the booked lengths of trains :( It might on TL but not much good hunting 313s  However it may help me plan some moves on TL that, one shall have to dig these timetables out when I get down there!

I shall examine the link about 450s you provided properly shortly, but in the meantime thank you for your help!

Some interesting stuff to note there, thanks for your help!

A quick look into a Gold Card means it is not worth the paper it's printed on really. A more detailed piece of research may prove otherwise but I have a feeling my original look at that will prove to be correct.

At a quick looks like the only 3 car peak turn from Moorgate now is the 1623/1838 departure, everything else 1600-1900 is 6.
From Kings X only the 1828 & 1858 are 313s but they come off Moorgate turns so aren't fresh.

Sure some on-the-day gen can be provided if required, but I don't do twitter...

Finsbury Park might be a better bet as there's also the outer-suburbans stopping on their way to / from KGX - so may help cover off some 317s and 365s as well as the 313s on their way to Moorgate. After all a quick trip from Finsbury Pk - Drayton Park or Highbury & Islington means you shouldn't be waiting long for the return to FP - particularly at H&I since you can use the Victoria line.

Yes, that's true - but how easy is it to get around at FP in the peak these days, especially with those ticket gates being where they are?

Cheers, shall have a look soon :)

FPK is a PITA with those barriers now, it must be said! At least they seem more crank friendly than the ATW lot in Hereford...

87015: Thanks for the gen, looks like I'll be off to Moorgate for the 1623 and go from there. Might even do it on both the Thursday and Friday, of course the trip report will reveal all! ;) 1813 or so there's a trio of 321s departing KGX IIRC so I'll want to look at that one for sure, as it comes off Hornsey especially. Or at least it did last year!

Sure will be a busy 3 days, my red pen is expected to run out before that trip's over! <D

Hi all,

I'm after some advice from the wise members of this forum, since I've apparently lost all knowledge in this area!

SWT 456s - there's two pairs out in the evening peak most nights now. Relevant Trains are 1724 Waterloo - Dorking and 1736 Waterloo - Hampton Court. The 1724 is empty from Wimbledon while the 1736 is an all day diagram. Both these will give you red 456s. Other folk have already mentioned the 0745 Clapham - Guildford. This will be a pair of snot rockets.

317s - West Anglia is the best place to look for them along with the Stratford - B Stortford. You'll find that they share the Cambridge turns with 379s, do nearly all the Hertford Easts and about half of the Chingfords. And there's some inter-working between Hertford East & Chingford services to confuse you. I've managed one 317/7 on a Sunday (still need a few others though) so will do a weekday over there sometime. You never know, you might srike lucky ....

I agree with others that the Network railcard is not worth it unless you are going to make loads of journeys in the area. But remember that the £12.00 Travelcard is valid all day so no need to fester in bed waiting for "off peak". You too can wedge out morning peak trains with a Travelcard.

Regardless, good luck when you come up to the smoke

The £12 travelcard is actually off-peak; For anytime the price is £17

My good sir, thank you as that will prove most handy with the 456s especially! I'm surprised they're not on the Frequently Requested Diagrams thread yet to be honest. Maybe I have a new plan for the Friday evening peak, quite all this is making me revisit the idea of a week in London one day!

Travelcards at £12 for all day don't reach Zone 6, which I'm staying in at Borehamwood to be more exact. An Anytime Travelcard for Zones 1-6 is £17.50 when I last looked, whether it's worth the £5.50 more I haven't yet decided, or whether I'll use Oyster PAYG in the morning into Zone 4 then get a Travelcard from there (I believe an Anytime Z1-4 Travelcard is £12) and of course Oyster PAYG back out to Zone 6 in the evening.

If the Oyster option will work out a little cheaper then I'm all up for that, although admittedly that'll give me less cranking opportunities, certainly no trips to East Croydon on that one! Hmm...

Thanks for the tips on 317s, shall definitely be having a look at the West Anglia side of things. Lots of trips between The Street and Hackney Downs/Totty Hale I reckon!

Certainly doesn't look like I'll be spending much time on the Tube!

Aha, found the timetables in the booklet I have for GN with booked lengths in, the 6 car trains start earlier than expected out of Moorgate. I also see there's some 8s and 12s off The Cross that could be worth looking at, 1743 in particular (any idea if this is 317s, 321s or 365s?) has potential to be doable to Finsbury Park on a trio and back down the line to do the 1813 for the triple 321s, might even see the ECS off Hornsey head to The Cross for the 1813 while heading up on the 1743 and see if it's worth doing. Hmm, already some moves are being planned!

I do have a feeling poor c2c won't get a look in again!

Z1-6 all day Travelcard will be 17 of your lovely pounds according to TfL website. Excess fares on PAYG from Z6 into Z4 (there's no station on the MML that's in both Z4 and Z5) will cost you 4.80 per day so you might as well pay the full amount and get all the zones all day. Plus you'll lose time messing around at Mill Hill Broadway switching from Oyster to Travelcard as well as missing out on the delights of sunny Croydon.

c2c similarly get ignored by me. While I've had all their fleet, I still need shedloads for the obligatory 10 miles.

With growth as it is off peak on the Moorgate line - there will be 6 car working at weekends soon (a commitment anyway for enhanced services from Dec this year - including Sundays) + a good number of mid evening trains now start being formed of 6 cars.....the 313's will go out in a blaze of Glory !

Thanks for the fares data, definitely makes sense to stick with the all day Travelcard in that case.

Your comment about Croydon made me grin I must say!

I still need 2 357s for sight let alone haulage, one day I'll have to make an effort!

C2C will be best to try and attack during an evening peak where trains are every few minutes departing Fenchurch, Saturday IIRC is normally every 10 minutes, but Sundays are a bit rubbish (4 an hour, with 20 minute gaps [ie 0-10-30-40-0]

Better leaving c2c until next year when the peak services will all call all stations to Upminster unless there is mass back tracking on the new timetable. Much easier to spin...

West Ham is a good C2C station to score 357s, island platform :)

Ah yes very true, much easier than Barking or Upminster that's for sure. No doubt by the time I get down there in 20 days time it'll all change anyway
