When departing from Hereford, in the Leominster direction, in a short space of time, a single-track chord diverges on the left hand side and curves away. What is this and what is its history?

I think it could be the remains of the former Hereford to Hay & Brecon Railway.
Closing as a through route in 1966, was not the former Bulmers railway centre based on the remains of this line in Hereford?

It goes to the Bulmer's brewery although it's O.O.U currently.

Used to be a fair amount of traffic from there in Speedlink days - as well as timber loading in the yard , and before that - there used to be inward loads of fuel oil for a power plant.

It was also a connection to the Hereford avoiding line, which joined the Hereford - Newport line at Red Hill Junction, about 3 miles south of Hereford.

I'm 99% certain the connection to the mainline was severed in the last few months. It's been disused for years upon years upon years, used exclusively by dogwalkers these days. There was a MPV trial (at least I'm sure it was a MPV!) to export product by rail a couple of decades ago, but it didn't work out.

Not sure if the line even goes near the Bulmers brewery any more, but there is a BOC gases facility down there.

It does make you wonder what things could have been like if that trial had been a success. I doubt that line will ever see any train ever set foot on that line again in my lifetime.

Hope you enjoyed your trip to Hereford Paul, I was grafting away at work so couldn't have introduced myself to you anyway I'm afraid.

Was that the line where Hereford Barton station once was situated?

Yes -- it wasn't an avoiding line but the original route through, on a nice straight alignment and with a reasonably well located station. For a small city Hereford has quite a complicated railway history.

There was a triangle going from station and also from the opposite direction near Bulmers
