How can I find out ticket prices from the ticket office

My Daughter and a friend are getting a train from Cambridge into London tomorrow, (Kings Cross I presume). The time they'll be travelling isn't known exactly, could be any time from 3pm to 6pm. When I look online I get different prices depending on train time booked, but is there a generic price guide anywhere when buying from the ticket office?

Apologies for the strange question, but I can't find this information and need to make sure she has enough money with her.

I also have a friends and family railcard, she's 16, can she use this as well?

will give the cheapest options but clicking on "other fares" will avoid the Advance fares which are not relevant. Alternatively,use www.brfares.com

The F and F railcard is only relevant if the over 16 is a/the named adult.

If you want a ticket that is guaranteed to be valid irrespective of day or time, then you would need to buy an Anytime ticket. All other ticket types have some kind of time restriction over when they can be used.

Having said that, with tomorrow being Saturday, any Off-Peak ticket will be valid.

OK thanks for the info & links. It seems Cambridge to Liverpool St is £9 with 1 train per hour, and Cambridge to Kings Cross is £16.50 with a few trains per hour.

The £9/£11 fares are advance tickets which are only valid on the specific service you select. I.e. £9 for the 15.21 departure as I write, £11 for the 16.04. The £16 fares are valid on any service.

I'm surprised the advance tickets are still available for purchase online at such close range, normally the cut off is 18.00 the day before. If you wanted a cheap £9 ticket buy online now and collect from the station. These aren't available to buy at the station tomorrow.

I think we're over complicating this for the OP's daughter who is probably no expert on rail fares.

I'm assuming no railcards are held and as others have said the F&F railcard can't used unless the OP's daughter is named on the card.

A super off peak day return ticket from Cambridge to Kings Cross is £16.50. This can be used on any train on Saturday, either via the Great Northern route to Kings Cross or the Greater Anglia Route to Liverpool Street. There is a Greater Anglia Only ticket allowing travel into Liverpool Street only but as this is only 10p cheaper I would advise against it.

If the OP's daughter required travel around London upon arrival then a travelcard would present the best option. This allows unlimited travel on trains, underground and buses in London Zones 1-6 (effectively the whole of Greater London). A super off peak day travelcard is £22.50 from Cambridge on a Saturday (and can be used on either the Great Northern or Greater Anglia route). The Great Northern route is the quickest route taking around 45 minutes on a non-stop train.

If the OP daughter's friend is under 16 then they will pay half the prices quoted above.

The fares listed above are walk up fares - they can be purchased from the station on the day of travel at the same price although don't get caught out by the often huge queues at Cambridge booking office.

They went to the TO who told them Kings Cross was £16.50 and Liverpool St was £16.40, but they were advised that KC was the better option for time of journey and frequency of trains. She couldn't use the F&F railcard as it was in my name and her friend was 16.

I wish it was that easy. I just looked at fares from Cambridge to Liverpool St next Saturday and there is no way, (as far as I can see), that I can find out how much the fare will be if I turn up on the day at the ticket office. Remember my Daughter didn't know an exact time last week so couldn't book in advance.

Please show me where I can find this info as I'm always happy to be educated.

Ignore the fares shown as 'advance', they aren't available as walk up fares at the time of travel. All the other fares are available at the ticket office, unless the website you are using has any online only discounts.

I wish it was that easy. I just looked at fares from Cambridge to Liverpool St next Saturday and there is no way, (as far as I can see), that I can find out how much the fare will be if I turn up on the day at the ticket office. Remember my Daughter didn't know an exact time last week so couldn't book in advance.

Please show me where I can find this info as I'm always happy to be educated.

It's even simpler than I suggested 3 days ago:

This comes up with the cheapest fares immediately and tells you it is an off-peak type ticket which doesn't need booking in advance and can be used on other trains.

I suppose the problem is that you have to put in a time and date to get the system to work. The system assumes you want to know the times first.

Www.brfares.com starts with the fares but you then have to check out the times each can be used.

I suppose that for the RGR Ranger fares the restriction code is superfluous, perhaps they are required as a limitation of the system? Same with the bus fares/rovers. SGDs with A1 restrictions are a mistake.

Some of those flows I suspect are meant to have a different restriction code by now, but I am reluctant to go into too many details for obvious reasons.

The only other ones I cannot explain are CDRs to some HoW destinations, which are perhaps understandable but they really should have been reclassified as SDRs at simplification, in the same way Northern reclassified some of their SVRs as SORs.
