Class 67 for the Night Riviera

FGW drivers on another forum have announced that FGW have concluded talks for the night Riviera to be hauled by class 67s from September 2015.

6 months from now will be used for driver training on the 67s.

Each rake will be hauled by 2 67s.

If RichW has seen this in the same place as I did it was not specific, as regards if they will be top n' tailed or double headed. There could be some substance to this as the same story was mentioned to me by someone who heard it in an unrelated railway meeting in Reading today.

With two locomotives in multiple operation (can 67s do that?) on each train more cars could be hauled, and I wonder if a dedicated Plymouth portion might be reintroduced to avoid the early wake up call. By Plymouth you've already passed the steepest parts of the route, so one on a shorter rake west of there might suffice.

Very good news for punters using the GW beds. The service has been pretty erratic for a while now.

Not in the slightest bit surprised. I never really understood why FGW leased a micro-fleet of locos themselves for the Night Riveria, seemed the perfect application for a 3rd party to provide traction. I've also been giving DRS a roasting on another thread regarding their recent performance on the Night Riviera. Obviously FGW have lost faith with DRS. The switch to 67 traction wasn't one of my most insightful predictions!

As for the 57's, FGW lease the 4 57/6's from Porterbrook, so they'll be looking for another customer to lease them, or sell them on. Similarly, DRS lease 7 57/3's from Porterbrook - I'd assume that DRS will find other work for them ...... after spending all of that money painting them all so quickly!!! :roll:

The suggestion is that it will be top and tail with the coaches through wired for AAR. As such, this would suggest that those locos fitted with remote fire protection equipment will be required, thus finding a use for the locos displaced from Chiltern turns.

Neither - I would expect a contract where DBS are responsible for providing sufficient locomotives for the service. This doesn't mean dedicatedd locos per se, although this a perfect excuse for DBS to replace four silver 67's in favour of blue (more so because of the AAR mentioned by 158) ..... although DBS have a bit of history with the wrong shade of blue on 67's! lol
