Torquay trains on a Saturday night

Why on earth is the last train into Torquay on a Saturday night arrive in Torquay at 21:43? Should people in Torbay go to bed with their Horlicks before 22:00? I have lived here for 3 years and this is the first time I want to get the train late on a Saturday form a night out in Exeter, don't think I will bother now

It has been like that for as long as I can remember. Was once told it had something to do with additional Summer Saturday traffic and thus less Traincrew available but not sure how much truth is in that. Can't be that much engineering work on the branch all year.

There's a National Express coach (route 501) from Exeter at 23:15, getting to Torquay for 23:55 if that helps?

Yeah, bloomin tedious. Coming back from a work do in Exeter gets expensive on a saturday night. 45 quid from Newton to Brixham by taxi! Bugger doing it from Exeter! 8 quid on the Nat Ex is slightly better i suppose.

Wouldn't wish to comment on the Torquay situation, but the late (22 40) train from Plymouth to Penzance used to be a nightmare with unruliness, and I'm not even referring to Saturday nights! The guard used to usually shut himself away except on the occasion when a passenger actually got killed.

Its not even like its a late train, the same train turns right around in Paignton is back in Newton Abbott by 22:09, no one has been in the pub long enough to get drunk and cause trouble.

Trouble can happen at all times of the day - see posts from railstaff on here about trouble during the morning peak!

Saying that, last train at a quarter to 10 does send a little early. I'm not sure what the reasons are - potential for trouble could be a reason but even then there are probably worse trains for that which do run.

I don't think he contributes so much these days, which is a shame.

There's always the 12/12A bus from directly outside Newton Stn. No walking by
Ut does take longer. Just cross your legs or go before & it's not so bad. Good to interchange between transport modes.

I'm not suggesting that trouble is limited to late trains or buses, planes or the street or need to be alcohol fuelled, I do think however its a poor service...

Indeed I often get the 12 from a night out in N Abbott but its the same last train to from Exeter to Torquay that stops at N Abbott :roll:

Having lived down that way and still having connections down there I completely agree with you. However, and this is an observation rather than any attempt to be a clever clogs, this is the first time in three years you've wanted to travel back late, so perhaps the level of service sort of reflects the demand. Not all that convinced by this point, to be honest, but there might be something in it.

Most late trains are de facto stock moves to get them into position for the following morning commuter traffic (which are the trips that pay the bills). Sunday morning does not have early commuter trains, therefore the sets do not need to be moved into position Saturday night...

The last train Mon- Fri is 2246 off EXD which does seem to suggest it's perceived lack of demand rather than operational issues.

Which is odd, since I've had the misfortune to need use that on occasion, and its been pretty full!

I see your point, but I am only one person and my lifestyle has changed now settled down here meaning I have more time to go out, I don't believe that everyone one in Torbay wants to be home by 10pm considering Exeter is nearest major city that you can get to without changing trains at NA and going in the opposite direction to Plymouth. As previously mentioned the last train midweek is full. As for stock movement, its all got to go back to Exeter anyway which is a straight run, they don't leave stock at Paignton overnight , I am sure there are paths available.

I see your point, but I am only one person and my lifestyle has changed now settled down here meaning I have more time to go out, I don't believe that everyone one in Torbay wants to be home by 10pm considering Exeter is nearest major city that you can get to without changing trains at NA and going in the opposite direction to Plymouth. As previously mentioned the last train midweek is full. I'm not sure and can't find the relevant details in reams of Network Rules of the Route Plan, but is there the possibility that the route is closed to allow for Engineering Work to take. There are many instances of this across the Network even though no work may actually take place.

Possibly. I'd always assumed the late starts on a sunday was due to something like that.

Getting to Exeter on a sunday morning from Torbay is....not easy by public transport. 'Tis the bane of many a shift worker.
