Finally! after its opening in 1993, Mansfield has been the largest UK town not to have a sunday rail service. that is history...

East Midlands Trains said:
Nottinghamshire County Council will be funding the service until May 2011, but if the service is as well used as expected it is hoped that the Department for Transport (DfT) will fund it on a permanent basis after this time.

The County Council has led a campaign to encourage the DfT to fund the Sunday service and has gained massive support with over 10,000 pledges of support from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire residents.

In response to the campaign, Tom Harris MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, has approved the start of the service from the start of East Midlands Trains new timetable on 14 December 2008 and the DfT has committed to carrying out a review in January 2011 to decide whether it will fund the service from May 2011.
It is hoped that the Sunday service will carry an average of 1,800 passengers by 2010, which should confirm the long-term DfT funding for the service.

Our new Sunday service (together with a more frequent service Mon-Sat) will start from the May timetable. It was launched in response to a campaign here and led to over £1.2mill of funding over three years.

It's fantastic for many places which don't get a Sunday service to get one at last. It's so outdated! I don't know what the situation is like up there but certaintly we get loads of people who use long distance trains during the busiest few hours of the week in this area.

To be honest, there are very few lines around here that don't get a Sunday service. However, it varies between summer and winter. For example, on the Esk Valley Line, there is no Sunday service in the winter, but during the summer timetable there are a generous number, with some through services from Bishop Auckland and Newcastle. Meanwhile, on the Yorkshire Coast Line, the winter Sunday service is only between Hull and Bridlington, and tends to be pretty infrequent with a late start. However, the summer Sunday service runs across the whole line, with double the frequency of the winter.

There is no Sunday service on the Barton branch in winter, but then again all year round the Sunday service on the South TPE line is pretty bad in the mornings, the first train is 0942 ish!

think that's bad, the Nottingham-Lincoln route during the winter times gets its first train from Nottingham at 1630, then every hour until about 2330 :???: except during summer, when there is a 1530 right through to cleethorpes

Oh dear - that is rather daft! There is also no service through Market Rasen on Sundays at the moment.

There is regularly no stopping train service on the Chat Moss line between the end of March and the timetable change in May on a sunday. It is always replaced by buses, 60 minute journey becomes 120 minute.
