Hi
New here (but not to the hobby) . Just wondering when the last timetabled nongangwayed service train ran on the mainline (excluding IOW and bubble cars) . many lasy workings are recorded but I cant remember anything regarding this subject. My guesis possibly 303.048. But does anyone one have a more specific recording.

Good thinking Dennis....yes they were (finished in 2004). Suspect this is the correct answer, unless anyone else can think of anything more recent.

The only ones fitted with gangways in latter years were 205205 and 207201-3 for the Marshlink. The others - 205001/9/18/25/8/32/3 and 207017 all ran non-gangwayed into 2004. I was on the farewell tour on Nov 27 2004, and all three units on that were non-gangwayed sets.)

Meridians run up and down to London everyday of the week coupled up in pairs, and will do for the forseeable future!

as Kneedown says - it depends on what you consider non-gangwayed. At Northern we operate a lot of non-gangway trains when 142s, 150/1s are in multiple with other stock and Im aware of no plans to get rid of them just yet.....

I think the OP was referring to the lack of connectivity between the vehicles/carriages themselves, rather than between different units coupled together.

Meridians are gangwayed within units, as are 142's . Non gangwayed is no connection between any coaches. There was also part gangwayed units, when introduced the 310's were only part gangwayed betweed driving trailer and ajacent coach.

the government in the mid-80s said that non-GW'd vehicles should not be used after 8pm each day, as vandalism and attacks on fellow passengers were common. Think even units such as 4CIG/VEP/CEP/COR's were NGW until then

The CIG/VEP/CEP units have always been gangwayed, the 4-CORs were long gone by then! I think what you're thinking of is the compartment units (which had were all individual in the vehicle, solid wall from one side to the other, without a connection between compartments). In March 1988 a girl was murdered while travelling in one of these compartments. After this, BR reformed the 4-EPB units (which were about the only units still running with these compartments) so that all the compartment trailers were confined to 32 sets which were restricted to peak hour use only - reducing the risk of future incidents as far as possible.

I believe the incident in question that hastened the end of compartment stock happened on an LTS Cl302, which also retained a number of such vehicles. These had red bands painted at cant rail height to show passengers where the compartments were within the formation, although I believe the remaining units were refurbed/withdrawn in fairly short order.

It might be the case that compartments could still be found on Cl307's at around the same time also.

Sorry , but 4COR were long gone by 1980, are you sure you dont mean 4REP? 4 Cor was a Southern Railway design (knick named lord Nelsons) introduced for the portsmouth service and working with the 4RES and 4BUF units. Last 4 CORS were used on the Reading service I believe in the early 70's.
The srvice on which the women was murdered was in the Bromley area and was a 415 (4EPB) after which as has been mentioned the compartment units were confined to peak hour services and had a red band painted above the windows and doors.
I believe that the 307's had all been refurbished by this time (they were the 1st GE refurbs) as were the 305 and 308's with the only unrefurbished outer units left being the 302's.

maybe - but 4CORs are destinctive because they only have one front windscreen on the left, the one on the right has the route indicator

Within units they obviously are. I was going by the working definition of front to rear of train, that we have special instructions for working.
I see what you're getting at though.

In 1996 a Networker split from other coaches in the same unit whilst shunting and high-mileage units from the 465 series had their connecting doors temporarily locked. ISTR that afterwards Aslef were not happy with the state of the units so they were all tested. I suppose that makes them non-gangwayed, albeit temporarily!

Of course still running non-gangwayed is all Tube stock, you're not supposed to pass through the carriage end doors except in an emergency.

310s (and probably 312s) were also prone to having gangway doors locked out on LTS duties throughout the 90s, remember a few normals totally withered at not being able to access the toilet facilities
