As it says on the tin....

If I fail part of a Driver assessment and lose one of my two lives....can I then still apply for another Rail position e.g Guard within the 6 months of failing a Driver Assessment?

Also....if I try and fail a Guard assessment...that my two lives gone and it's game over? (assuming I have already lost a life)

Thanks

Good luck probably easier than passing ;)

As I understand it, you have two goes at the tests for each role, twice for guard, twice for driver. Can't apply for the same role within a six month period. You can apply for other roles. I failed the MMI for the guards test but applied within 3 months for a Driver role, application was accepted.

Thanks all.

I understand OPC do Pyschometric tests for guards around ticketing, customer service etc.

I passed stage one assessment for a recent driver role, got all the way to the end of the stage 2 assessment and fluffed my lines on the two hand co-ordination tests!! Too slow by all accounts

Will have a crack at Guards and see if I can master that

It'll depend on who you apply for whether or not they care about previous attempts at the conductor assessments. Only one company I applied for actually said they worked on two fails (from any company) and you're out. Though they all do generally enforce a six month wait following a fail. But that might drop down to three, depending on what you've failed.

In short: ask HR :p

Quite a while. Not as intense as the Driver assessment, but looks for most of the same qualities

I think that really depends where your strengths and weaknesses lie to be honest!

I think there's many an applicant who's come out of a guards assessment day ready to drop! I know I did! If you are weak with numbers, timings and customer service I cant imagine the guards assessment day being a walk in the park lol!

2 people on my driving course however said they were actually shocked at how straight forward the drivers assessment day was! Horses for courses!

Very true! Though, to be fair, if the criteria you mention were weaknesses then a candidtae would likely have to conceed that perhaps the Guard grade isn't their destiny! I also know of people who have, allegedly, found the Driver testing 'easy' - though I suspect there may be some bravado when one has safely passed! ;) I've only sat the Guard version myself, and I would say I found it relatively straightforward - I think much of the stress comes from the anticipation rather thsn the actual exam content?

yes sounds about right!the build up to my assessments for driving was the most torturous experience of my life!

i mean if it has always been your ambition to be a platform cleaner but there is lots of competition and you are bordering on desperation to get the job I'm sure they will say that the interview/assessments etc were as stressful as any drivers or guards job! i suppose there are numerous factors such as personality that come into it also! if you are a born worrier for example I'd stay away from railway recruitment as it will probably finish you off long before you get a job offer lol

kinda! but i started as a guard and my Maths was terrible and i managed to do it for 7 years pretty much stress free so it is doable! thank you avantix lol

Would that be the new or old driver testing?

Few found the old testing easy from memory

The new one hasn't been around long

Is it surprising no maths questions are undertaken during driver recruitment? though I understand some freight companies use numerical testing

I guess the old mechanical tests used them

Is any maths involved as a driver these days?

They were the "few" that passed it. If you've "got it", you'll wonder what all the fuss is about.

Most definitely - working out how much overtime a particular shift is worth to you!

i do believe DRS do use some basic numeracy tests as an extra within their driver recruitment aside from that I'm not sure!

yes you could say with the old mechanical testing there was an element of math used to work out answers but it certainly wasn't something you'd need carol vorderman for but then again if your maths was as bad as mine some could say she is needed lol!

I believe that DRS do some extra testing, such as SCAAT and others before sending candidates off to the OPC for the industry standard drivers assessments? It does seem a more complex process than for other operators.

As for the guards tests - I agree that the anticipation is worse than the actual testing. Doing the practice material and the SCAAT program really worried me , as my results weren't that good - but when it turned out the tests were entirely paper based, I relaxed a bit, as I found it easier off paper than a screen.

The most worrying moment during my assessment was that I finished the Rules Comprehension Test (RAT?) way ahead of the other candidates and thought I'd missed something. Turned out it was just that I'm a quick reader and passed it "with flying colours" according to the assessor.
