Hello all,

I travelled between Shepherd's Bush and Ealing Broadway yesterday during the evening peak with a railcard-linked Oyster, and was charged £1.15. The single fare finder gives £1.70. I'd previously travelled between Uxbridge and White City (£1.00) and had used four buses (£4.40 capped), so had not reached the daily cap of £7.75 for the zones I'd used (2-6). I'm not complaining that I was charged a cheaper fare of course, but I'm curious as to why!

The only possibility that I can think of is that it's applied the 34% railcard discount to the evening peak fare, since the quoted peak fare rates for railcard holders are the same as the standard public rates, but the gold card discount can be applied to anytime fares after 0930. I was trying to do the maths on whether the reduction came about because the system capped the bus fares plus the zone 2-3 journey at the z2-3 off-peak cap rate and kept the z2-6 journey separate but that doesn't add up as it'd be £4.95+£1.00 and your total spend was £6.55.

Curious.

That being said, your post says "railcard linked". The disabled railcard has different peak fares to the other railcards.

It's possible that for railcards other than the disabled railcard the morning peak fares are from the table on pages 1/2 and the evening peak from p3/4.

Unfortunately, Oyster doesn't do that – it's generally assumed that it does owing to all the ‘use Oyster to get the cheapest fare’-type-messages, but in actual fact the way the capping works is it looks at the largest combination of zones you've used and uses that as its basis.

Having said that, I believe that the new backend-powered weekly contactless capping does work in the way you suggest, as otherwise it'd lead to nonsensical results if someone (for example) travels in zones 1 and 2 only for six days of the week then makes one journey to zone 6 on day seven. I'm unaware of this actually being tested though!

Ah, sorry, my railcard is a disabled railcard. I hadn't realised that there were separate fares for this.

Neither had I until I looked at that PDF!

Introduced on Jan 2nd to bring the discount into line with that offered on NR paper tickets.

I've not tested it, but I've been assured that's how it works by a senior director at TfL.

Is that just for the Disabled Railcard in the afternoon peak or the morning peak as well?

All day every day. If you already had your railcard loaded before 2nd Jan you need to get it changed to a new code which differentiates it from the other railcards.

Interesting - I have not seen this railcard differentiation in the Oyster TIS I use and I've loaded a few railcard (thankfully not Disabled Persons') discounts lately! Interesting change!

Is there a PDF of non railcard capping for Oyster?

If I were to use my Oyster card on a week day but not touch in during peak times, would it cap at the off peak daily rate ?

Does using buses count towards peak capping, if I were use buses between 16.00 to 19.00 ?

Since the last fares round there are no longer separate peak and off-peak caps, just 'the cap'. (Except for some of the outer extremities beyond zone 6) We had a fairly massive thread about the changes before Christmas.

Not technically true. There are still anytime and off-peak caps, but for full price adults in zones 1-6 they are the same rate. If it didn't work like that then you'd have a problem if you went out beyond zone 6 later in the day.

Yes, it's here. Buses count towards their own all day cap as well as the anytime rail cap, and if it's after 0930 the off-peak rail cap. Whichever cap is reached first stops charging for that mode.

Thanks for clarifying that - it makes a lot of sense to do it that way then, and also because they can reverse it easily.
