I'm going up to Scotland in a few weeks for the first time, I'm looking to bag as many 158s and 170s I can in about three days. I'm getting the sleeper from Eusotn to Inverness the one day, then Scotland is my oyster.

Any ideas ?

The Tay bridge is a must as it's the longest in the country.
The Glasgow Subway is well worth a ride.
And the trains run on a seawall on the Ayrshire coast, great in stormy weather.
Another forn of transport that exists in Glasgow is a bus that drives across the river Clyde not float!

Since you'll be in Inverness you might as well do the Mallaig and Wick lines first, then head to Aberdeen. Then Dundee to Edinburgh. Then to Perth and to Glasgow. Where you could catch Helensburgh, Stranraer, Oban and Paisley services.
That should give you lots of DMUs and see almost everywhere.

To bag DMUs?

Go back and forth between Haymarket and Waverley for a morning.
Pop up to Inverness on the Chieftain and catch the Inverness stock
Take a trip out to one of the Glasgow suburbs on the Oban/Fort William 156s

From Inverness go to Kyle, then bus to Armadale on Skye, ferry to Malliag and back down to Glasgow

If you just want to see them, I suggest train, Inverness to Aberdeen. Train Aberdeen - Haymarket or Edinburgh. Stop at either station for a few hours.
Next day, Glasgow. Several hours at Glasgow Central, but crossing to Queen Street occasionally when West Highland or Inverness / Aberdeen trains are due. Repeat on next day to try and try to catch any you might have missed.

If you also want rides:-
1. Break journey heading south via Aberdeen,
2. Short trips such as Inverness / Dingwall, Edinburgh/Haymarket or Kirkcaldy, etc., short trips out of Glasgow, etc.

Spot on suggestion, so good in fact it was exactly what I was going to suggest...:D

You want to bag DMU? Just stay around Glasgow and Edinburgh. There are loads! Is it worth traipsing all the way to Inverness to ride on one DMU when you could ride on 10 in the central belt area?

Agreed, Glasgow Queen Street is all DMU on the high-level and you can bag some DMUs between Haymarket & Edinburgh, anything heading over the bridge, Queen Street or Central via Shotts

Central for East Kilbride, Dunlop+beyond & the rare Girvan+beyond services

He asked about DMU bagging, why bang on about the Skye round and going over bridges and stuff....

Edinburgh - Haymarket should cover most 158s/170s. Couple of 158s on the anniesland run and plenty of 156s out of QS and Central. Nip up to Inverness if you want for the IS 158 diagrams

You will need a big bag to put them all in! ;)

Do you mean bag (as in being a NED*) or bag as in spotting?

New engine Desperado, a (not so) friendly term for a person that is only after short haulage from each engine (actually a loco for all the pedantic morons out there) so they can get as many new engines in the book as possible. This is the complete opposite of the 'main' men who got as much mileage as possible from each loco they were hauled by.
