I've caught the EC service to Lincoln a couple of times. I don't think any doors were actually locked out of use, but the guard announced a couple of times that only the rearmost carriages would be on the platform, and to move down. If they were actually out of use, then any first-class passengers would have to slum it with the commoners between Newark Northgate and Lincoln.
I've seen them locked out of use before, so it depends on the guard on the train, although I think you've got something confused, because coaches B, C, D and E at the front are locked out. which are all standard. If the rear coaches were off the end of the platform, it would be blocking the high street level crossing in the City centre, which I can't imagine would please many!
Idk if you were travelling on a reversed set, but it's always the standard coaches that are locked out.
