Preston Park - not in Brighton group?

I've just realised that Preston Park PRP isn't in the Brighton group.

For ages I've used the 2 interchangeably - started journeys on PRP tickets at Brighton - both along the coast and along the mainline, including ones that stop at PRP. And vice versa. And same with ending journeys 'short' and 'late' - every combination possible.

I can't see an easement.

Having said that, a search on NRE for PRP > Bristol TM tomorrow shows a 9:34 that changes at Brighton and doubles back.

So what exactly is the status of the 2?

Tickets from Preston Park may be valid via Brighton and vice-versa, depending on the destination.

It's also within 3 miles of the shortest route (see Shortest route) but I personally wouldn't advise starting short at Brighton on such a ticket. In contrast, a ticket to somewhere on the coast would be absolutely fine to start short at Brighton.

I saw that section; I'm not sure whether that means it's always OK to double back via Brighton when going from PRP to destinations to the North, or just on the particular journeys that NRE shows it.

I'll be more careful with my start and end points in future!

With things like that, what the Routeing Guide says and booking engines say tend not to correlate at all with what happens on the ground. I'd advise that if it's quicker, do it, and if not, have a good reason for doing it or buy additional tickets if necessary.
